The basic question is this, how would competent leadership of MLB changed the current standing of baseball in the international world?

I suggest instead of a 3/4 potential failure in Washington DC, MLB should of gave the Expos to Mexico City. Although, if not for the 1994 WS being cancelled the team in Canada might have been profitable anyway? Expos 1994 WS winners? It could of happened. (check there roster?)

All us baseball fans should realize the WBC is a replacement for Olympic BB. Since, in 2012 the olympics will not have Baseball, as those lazy Englanders don't want to have to build a field. It happened right after the announcement, of London, NO BASEBALL.

To the subject, would competent leadership perhaps escaped this faux paux? There is no way you can "HONESTLY" say that there is not enough international support (my sister is a presision skater....a sport on its way to the olympics, so I kinda know the rules). Is it MLBs hording of their stars that has more to do with the politics of this situation? If the MLB gave the "hockey" mid season break for the summer olympics, would there still be an event? I kind of chear the standing of MLB for now, but I see where the game misses the people of the rest of the world.

Like DC vs Mexico City....

Dude, you know why baseball was kicked off the Olympics, don't you? It's basically because the IOC thought it was "too American", for one thing. Plus the break thing and the lax drug-testing policy too, but I think it was mainly the first thing. Softball was kicked off the program as well, which is unfair, considering that China beat the USA in a softball tournament afterwards.

EDIT: I guess it was also the fact that if the USA isn't in the tournament, the TV cameras stay away.

The MLBPA would have explained the facts of life to him.

If David Stern ran MLB there would probably be a salary cap and more parity. Superstars would be marketed better and he would enforce a "sterner" drug policy (sorry but I had to do it).

Of course we would also have a Slam Dunk contest in the AS game, a televised draft lottery, more playoff teams, and more European players.

Who cares about baseball in the Olympics anyway? They never showed any of the games on TV anyway. I still remember not being able to see the 2000 U.S. Olympic basebal team win gold. Not one of their games was televised.

If David Stern ran MLB we'd be flooded with an endless stream of "next great players".

Just like Stern did when Jordan was ready to retire and suddenly Grant Hill was the next Michael Jordan and then it was Kobe Byrant who was the next Michael Jordan and then it was LeBron James who was the next Michael Jordon and soon it'll be ....... who's the next Michael Jordan.

Do you really want that type of marketing in MLB? Baseball is built on its rich history and tradition and if somebody tried launching a marketing campaign saying that Griffey Jr. or A-Rod or Albert Pujols was the next DiMaggio or Mantle or Aaron -- baseball fans would find it insipid. That's precisely the type of marketing that Stern would bring to MLB. That's why he should stay in the NBA and we should find someone like Sen. Mitchell to be our next commissioner.
