I'm going to start a thread with Negro League data. I've got a bunch of guys whose data I will put in alphabetical order, and then a post with some general data. After that, posts are welcome. If we get more info, I may add an index of where to find data to this post.

Please note all this data was originally posted in Baseball Think Factory, but not all in one thread. I copied and pasted everything to concentrate it into this one thread.

Notes:

1928-29 -- Led league in runs, home runs, and stolen bases. On New Year’s Day hit 3 inside-the-park home runs at spacious Aida Park in Cienfuegos.

1929-30 -- Led league in at-bats, runs, and doubles. Cienfuegos won the pennant race; Figueredo’s text says Bell won the MVP award, though the list of MVP winners shows Bell’s teammate Willie Wells (.322, 43 runs) for that year.

1930-f -- Regular season ended after 5 games because of dispute about new stadium (La Tropical) lease.

1930-w -- A short special season (Unico) was played in place of incomplete regular season; Cienfuegos played 9 games.

The feature of his Cuban League record that seems remarkable to me is his high rate of runs scored relative to hits. It suggests a) he must have been drawing quite a few walks, and b) it seems unlikely that he was thrown out much on the bases
I wasn't sure if anybody else has the Mexican League encyclopedia. Here are Bell's stats there, which also give us some W/K data:

Chet Brewer

A big challenge in analyzing Brewer is the portion of his career that may be undocumented.

Here's his career line from Macmillan 8th:

Chet Brewer
1925-1932 NeL
1933 in semipro ball
1934-37 NeL (no data for 1934-35)
1938-40 "Latin America,"
1941 NeL,
1942-45 "Latin America,"
1946-48 NeL

89-63, .596. 166 g, 115 gs, 97 cg, 1110 ip, 1075 hits, 283 bb, 552 k, 14 so, 3 sv

If some of that Latin American play is in Mexico, we should be able to get stats, but if it isn't, we won't. 5. Dr. Chaleeko Posted: May 06, 2005 at 04:28 PM (#1317359)

In the California Winter League, Brewer's record over 13 seasons was 43-13.

Comparing some of the top NeL pitchers in this league:

Chet Brewer 43-13
Andy Cooper 22-6
Reuben Currie 26-19
Bill Foster 24-1 (!)
Robert Griffith 20-2
Satchel Paige 56-7
Andrew Porter 23-6
Bullet Rogan 42-14
Jim Willis 41-10

From 1931 to 1936, Paige was 50-2 (!!); his record is brought down by a 6-5 record from 1943-47.

Not all pitchers have complete strikeout and innings pitched records; of these, the only ones whose records are complete are:

Currie, 162 K, 94 W, 402 IP
Griffith, 228 K, 29+ W, 214 IP
Paige, 770 K, 138+ W (2 seasons with 121 IP are missing walks), 572 IP
Rogan, 351 K, 189 W, 516 IP
I haven't posted them yet, but I've gotten as far as I can go on the career leaderboards.

Anyway, so here's where Brewer falls on the Holway-based career U.S. NgL leaderboards.

RAY BROWN IN MEXICO

Please consult the Re-evaluating Negro League Pitchers thread for league and team data for Brown. Generally, however, I can say this
-1946: He was probably a little below league average as he was below his team’s average in ERA and other rates. This was the only good team he played for in Mexico.
-1947: His ERA was below his team’s, his K and BB rates were not as good as his mates, but his H/9 was lower than the team. Roughly league average.
-1948: Two teams. My own estimated team splits show him as having a very good 36 innings in comparison to his teammates at Veracruz but showing the same pattern as 1947 in 117 innings with Tampico, namely a lower ERA that is driven by a lower H/9 than team, despite worse K and BB numbers.
-1949: Appears to be an excellent season. He creams his teammates in ERA, K rate, BB rate, and H/9, while going 15-11 for a 41-43 team.

So even in his bad seasons, he was extremely close tothe league average.
I guess Brown’s Cuban League statistics haven’t been posted yet, so I thought I’d post them.

Ray Brown pitched 5 seasons in Cuba. His first season, 1936-37, was arguably the greatest season ever by a pitcher in the Cuban League, at least according to the limited statistics that are available. He went 21-4, setting the all-time record for victories in a season, for a team that with its other pitchers went 16-28. He nearly single-handedly led his team, Santa Clara, to a tie for the lead at the end of the season, resulting in a 3-game playoff against Martín Dihigo's Marianao team. In the first game Brown beat Dihigo 6 to 1, but Marianao won the second game 4 to 2. In game 3, Brown again squared off against Dihigo with only two days rest, but this time Marianao won the game, and the pennant, 7 to 3. Reminiscent of Chesbro, 1904.

Brown's next two Cuban seasons were also very successful. Brown was the top pitcher on the pennant-winning team each season, though he received considerably more support as Santa Clara added Sam Bankhead, Lázaro Salazar, Bob Griffith, and (in 1938-39) Josh Gibson.

His last two seasons in Cuba, 1945-46 and 47-48, he had only a few decisions, so it is likely that he was being used quite a bit in relief.

Here’s his pitching record:

1937-38 Led league in percentage (.706), complete games (14); tied for lead in wins (12).
1938-39 Led league in complete games (16).
1947-48(PF) Players Federation - an independent league that operated for one season. Santiago dropped out part way through season.

Ray Brown was also a very good hitter, which can be seen in his batting statistics. He hit for a good average and with power; 6 home runs in 353 at-bats is particularly impressive in Cuba, where the ballparks were huge and home runs were rare. (Batting stats for his last two seasons were not available in Figueredo.)

NOTES
Played with Santurce every year except the first.
1941-42 Finished 2nd in BA (behind Josh Gibson)
1946-47 Finished 1st in R, H, BA.
1947-48 Finished 1st in R, HR, RBI, BA (Triple Crown) also finished just 1 behind the league leaders in H (101-102) and 2B (20-21).
1948-49 Finished tied for 1st in HR.
1949-50 Finished 1st in H, HR, RBI, BA (Triple Crown) and second in 2B.
1950-51 Finished 1st in RBI, 2nd in HR, 3rd in H

Of course, the most interesting thing about his PRWL career is the 1947-48 season which is pretty much entirely out of context with the rest of his PR career. He won the Triple Crown counting stats by enormous margins [27 HR to 13 (2nd), 86 RBI to 58 (2nd)] with a ridiculous .906 SA which was bettered only by the great Josh Gibson in a much shorter season.

Taking a quick look at Willard Brown's stats in 'The Negro Leagues Book' (and ignoring Holway, who I feel is statistically unreliable) Please remember these are the words of the original author and not mine. At the very least, I feel the use of the term "statistically unreliable" is unduly harsh with respect to the dedicated work of John Holway. (Jim Albright) gives Brown:

[Note- The 'Negro Leagues Book' and Holway credit Brown with playing for Pueblo in the Mexican League in 1941. This is an error. Willard Brown did not play in Mexico in 1941 and the stats are actually those of Barney Brown. This may be responsible for a lot of your confusion.]

A few notes on these stats:

1) Brown did hit better in 1937 and 1938 than he did later. Of course, 1937 and 1938 are the first and second years of the Negro American League. The League was very unstable during those first two years and probably of a lesser overall quality. This could account for Brown's good 37 and 38 season or it may just be random fluctation.

2) Brown's 1940 Mexican League season fits right into the overall pattern of his statistics except for one thing:

1937-39 366 130 22 07 15 .355 .577
1940-40 294 104 18 04 08 .354 .524
1941-43 383 135 18 08 16 .352 .567

His home runs were down. But oddly enough, this is a pattern of Brown's career. In his first exposure to a new baseball League, Brown would either hit very poorly (for neither BA or power) such as in the Majors (.179 BA) or Cuba (.145) OR he would hit ok but without the expected power.

A good example of this is Brown's time in the Texas League. In 1953, the 38-year-old Brown played 138 games, hit .310, and knocked 23 HRs. In 1954, the 39-year-old Brown played 144 games, hit .314, and crunched 35 HRs. A quite amazing increase for a player of his age.

Brown had a reputation as a bad ball hitter, but I always like to think of his type of hitter as a 'recognition' hitter. In other words, Brown was a much better hitter against a pitcher once he got comfortable with the pitcher's delivery, style, and assortment of pitches [a modern guy like this would be Alfonso Soriano or Shea Hillenbrand].

In other words, Brown was probably a better hitter the more he saw of a pitcher.

3) The Negro Leagues, like the Major Leagues, began to have trouble with the quality of their baseballs in late 1942. Brown's 1942 and 1943 stats may or may not be effected by this and the short WW2 deadball era that lasted from 1942 and into 1946.

WORLD WAR 2

Brown spent 1944 and 1945 in the U.S Army. Of course, he got to play some ball as both he and Leon Day ended up playing in the U.S. Army's 1945 European Baseball Tournament on a integrated team against various Major League players.

Here’s more information on Charleston’s play in the Cuba, mostly coming from Cuban Baseball: A Statistical History, 1878-1961, by Jorge S. Figueredo.

1915

Charleston was a rookie with the Indianapolis ABCs when they visited Cuba in the fall of 1915 and played 20 games with the Cuban League teams. Their record was 8-12. His teammates included Dick Redding, Ben Taylor, Bingo DeMoss, and George Shively. I do not have Charleston’s statistics for this series.

1920-21

The Bacharach Giants joined the Cuban League. Despite having star players including Charleston, Lundy, Santop, and Redding, by January 13 they were only 4-11 in the 3-team league, when they returned to the U.S. and forfeited their remaining games.

39 AB, 7 R, 16 H, 2 2B, 0 3B, 0 HR, 2 SB, .410

Note: The batting champion was Pelayo Chacón, with .344 in 93 AB.

1922-23

In an attempt to expand from their base in Havana, the league added a club from Santa Clara in the center of the island, and Charleston, Alejandro Oms, Dave Brown, and Bill Holland played for them. Santa Clara was 14-13 when they suddenly pulled out of the league in reaction to a league decision that took away a win, robbing Charleston of an opportunity to qualify for the batting championship. (Bernardo Baró won the championship with .401 in 152 AB.

92 AB, 24 R, 41 H, 7 2B, 3 3B, 0 HR, 7 SB, .436

1923-24

Considered the greatest team in the history of Cuban baseball, the Santa Clara team loaded up on stars, including Charleston, Frank Duncan, Frank Warfield, Oliver Marcelle, Dobie Moore, Alejandro Oms, Pablo Mesa, and pitchers Bill Holland, Rube Currie, Dave Brown, Merven Ryan, and José Méndez. Their team batting average was .331. The season was terminated early when Santa Clara reached a record of 36-11, 11½ games ahead of second-place Habana in the 4-team league.

176 AB, 59 R, 66 H, 9 2B, 5 3B, 3 HR, .375

Charleston led the league in runs scored and stolen bases (31? looks suspicious). Marcelle led the league in batting with .393 and Bienvenido Jiménez led in HR with 4.

1924

After the early termination of the regular season in mid-January, the weakest team (Marianao) was folded and its best players were dispersed to Habana and Almendares for a special season of 25 games. Santa Clara fielded the same team that had blown away the opposition. This time there was near parity Santa Clara won by the slimmest of margins with a 13-12 record, ½ game ahead of Habana and 1 game ahead of Almendares.

63 AB, 11 R, 23 H, 4 SB, .365

(Note: The batting champion was Torriente with .377)

1924-25

Charleston played for Almendares, which ran away with the title with a 33-16 record, 8½ games ahead of Habana in a 4-team league. Charleston’s teammates included Bullet Rogan, Adolfo Luque, José Acosta, Biz Mackey, John H. Lloyd, Newt Allen, and Dick Lundy.

153 AB, 25 R, 40 H, 10 2B, 4 3B, 4 HR, 0 SB, .261

At the end of the season, the players were organized by nationality into “All-Yankees” and “All-Cubans” teams, which played a series of 8 games. Charleston played for the All-Yankees, who won 5-3.

1925-26

Charleston played for Habana, which ended in second place in the 3-team league, 2 games out with a 32-15 record. However, 13 of their victories represented forfeits by San José, which withdrew with a 3-16 record and 25 games left to play. Charleston recorded only 40 AB, so I wonder if he may have left the team early or arrived late.

40 AB, 14 R, 14 H, 3 2B, 2 3B, 2 HR, 0 SB, .350

1926-27

Adolfo Luque and Miguel Angel (Mike) González led the better players to an alternative league, the Triangular, which played their games at the University of Havana Stadium. It appears to have been more batter-friendly than spacious Almendares Park (where most games were played through 1930), since 4 players had averages above .400. (Pablo Mesa won the championship with .433.) Charleston played for the Leones, who finished in second place in the 3-team league with a 16-19 record, 5 games behind. Notable teammates included Marcelle, Emilio Palmero, and José Acosta. Charleston led the league in hits and in AB.

151 AB, 25 R, 61 H, .404

1927-28

Charleston played for “Cuba,” which placed second in the 3-team league with a 16-21 record, though 4 of their victories represented forfeits by Almendares, which withdrew before the season ended. Teammates included Bill Foster, Pelayo Chacón, and Judy Johnson.

Charleston led the league in home runs (5) and stolen bases (11). According to Roberto González Echevarría in The Pride of Havana, Almendares Park had huge dimensions. “The left-field fence was well over five hundred feet away, and according to Robreño no batter ever clouted one over it...The low fence in right field was four hundred feet away, and only the great left-handed sluggers, like Torriente, Alejandro Oms, Oscar Charleston, Jud (Jorocón) Wilson, and Esteban (Mayarí) Montalvo were able to hit one past it.”

120 AB, 22 R, 42 H, 6 2B, 2 3B, 5 HR, 11 SB, .350

1928-29

Charleston again played for Cuba, but when the team dropped to a 17-22 record they withdrew from the league and forfeited their last 13 games. Teammates included Adolfo Luque (9-2!), Judy Johnson, and Oliver Marcelle.

114 AB, 20 R, 38 H, 6 2B, 4 3B, 4 HR, 6 SB, .333

1930, Special Season

Roberto González remarks that the seasons after 1929-30 found the Cuban League in disarray. In the fall of 1930 the regular season ended after only 5 games, apparently as a result of contract problems with the new stadium, La Tropical. A special season was organized in November in the old ballpark, Almendares Park. Charleston played for Marianao, which finished second with a 9-5 record, ½ game behind in a 4-team league. Teammates included a number of future or former major leaguers: Billy Herman (.229), Howard Freigau (.239), Elias Funk (.346), Al Moore (.292),Tom Angley (.267), Claude Jonnard (5-1), Roy Wilkinson (2-1), and Bill Burwell (1-1).

Charleston led the league in average, runs scored, and triples, and tied with Lundy for the lead in hits.

1947-48PF – The Players Federation was an alternative league that played for only one season. (Beginning in the 1947-48 season, American organized baseball gained control over the regular Cuban League; the Players Federation was organized in protest and included most of the long-time stars.)
Leon Day played four seasons in Puerto Rico:

Year Team W-L SO ERA
1939-40 Aguadilla 12-11 186 2.17
1940-41 Aguadilla 10-6 149 2.40
1941-42 Aguadilla 12-9 168 2.93
1949-50 Santurce 1-2 20 5.25

This team, Aguadilla, was one of the worst in le League. In 1939-40 they finished 7th (21-34), 1940-41 5th (19-22) and in 1941-42 4th (21-22). Notice that in every year he was responsible of more than 50% of the teams victories.

In that first year, 1939-40, only Satchel Paige (19), Billy Byrd (15) and José Figueroa (14), won more games. In strikeouts he was second with 186, only Paige had more (208). In ERA he was fifth (2.17) following Sylvio Garcia (1.32), Roy Partlow (1.49), Satchel Paige (1.93) and Billy Byrd (1.97).

In 1940-41 he finished third in wins (10 and tied with Luis R. Cabrera), after Billy Byrd (15), Impo Barnhill (11) and Chester Brewer (11). In SO he finishes second (149) behind Impo Barnhill (193). In ERA he was third (2.40), only Barnhill (2.12) and Byrd (2.38) were better.

In 1941-42 he lead the league in K's with 168 and was 5th in ERA (2.93) behind Raymond Brown (1.80), Barney Brown (2.57), Juan Guilbe (2.82) and Vidal López (2.88)

His batting record is:

Unfortunately, the MeL didn't count games started (until the last couple of seasons of his career), runs allowed (as opposed to earned runs), saves, or home runs allowed.

Pitching stats are quite skeletal. Also, the career totals at the end of the Cuban Baseball book show a 107-56 record (he's the career leader in wins). Somewhere I missed 5 wins and 4 losses, but haven't been able to figure out where.
Here is an analysis of Dihigo’s wins above team for the Cuban League. I think these data are largely consistent with Chris Cobb # 50 showing his wins above team were much more impressive starting about 1935. I think they are also consistent with Gadfly’s assertion (#61) that as a pitcher he could have been a 20-game winner at least some years from 1935 to 1942 (Gadfly said starting with 1931, but Dihigo didn't pitch in Cuba during 1931-34).

Here's a little more on Dihigo's pitching in Mexico.

1940
Pitched in hard luck. -.4 WAT despite ERA that was 20% less than team total and 25% better than league. Peripherals all suggest a better record than he got stuck with.

1941
No data on him.

1942
Huge year, 22-7, 6 WAT with a 2.53 ERA in a 4.38 league, on a 4.37 team that went 48-40.

1943
A very good year. 16-8 with 2 WAT and an ERA of 3.10. But team ERA was 3.22. League was 3.90.

1944
12-10, .5 WAT, 3.14 ERA for a 4.09 ERA team. I haven't compiled the league figures yet.

1945
Haven't compiled figures for the league or him.

1946
11-4, 3.3 WAT, 2.83 ERA for a 4.18 ERA team in a 3.94 ERA league.

1947
The last season I have data on him. 4-2, 1.4 WAT, 4.37 ERA for a 4.72 ERA team in a 3.96 ERA league.

All told, it's a very interesting and positive career in Mexico, probably better than I had personally credited him with initially.

Hang on, I looked back, and it turns out that I'd simply missed Dihigo in my spreadsheet in 1941.

1941
9-10, .5 WAT, 4.10 ERA for a 5.08 ERA team in a 4.77 ERA league.

Career Data from Holway
1010-2875, .351
224 HR, 43 hr/550 (n.b. – Holway lists him at 51 hr/550 ab, but he lists 2375 ab as his total here: clearly a misreading of a handwritten number 8. His hr/550 total is the highest in the NeL, but only slightly higher than Mule Suttles’ 40/550 ab.)
21-56 vs. Major-league competition, 2 hr

Gibson has some Cuban play, I think, and a number of winter seasons in Puerto Rico, for which data is also available, and I’m sure there are better stats available for his Mexican League seasons, but this is good for a start.

Gibson's fielding history is simple: he was a catcher throughout his career.

Here's his career line from Macmillan 8th

439 g, 1820 ab, 644 hits, 110 2b, 45 3b, 141 hr, 17 sb, .354 ba, .696 sa

His Cuban record consisted of two seasons:

1937-38 - Habana (apparently signed late in season)
61 AB, 11 R, 21 H, 3 2B, 2 3B, 3 HR, 13 RBI, .344

1938-39 - Santa Clara (won pennant)
163 AB, 50 R, 58 H, 7 2B, 3 3B, 11 HR, 39 RBI, 2 SB, .356

Led league in runs and HR. Set season record in HR. (I'm not sure what the previous record was, but thumbing through the book the highest earlier total I could find was 7 by Mule Suttles. The Cuban ballparks prior to 1942 were huge -- the main park in Havana, La Tropical, was listed as 498 to left, 505 to center, and 398 to right.)

There's also his Dominican League stats from 1937, from Holway, which I think nobody's mentioned. Gibson hit 24 for 53 (.453). Next highest was Clyde Spearman, at .352, then Dihigo at .351 (in 97 ABs). Holway doesn't give extra base hits, or anything else.

I can find no records in Holway for Johnson after 1928. Cleveland and Memphis were not good teams in 1928, so it looks like his career was on a downward slope at that point.

vs. Major-league competition
1922 2-4 (double, home run) vs. Babe Ruth all-stars. Jack Quinn pitched.

According to Holway, he was 8-16 lifetime vs. major-league pitching, with 2 home runs.

Brief analysis: Johnson left the military and joined the Negro National League when he was 26. (That answers one of Dr. Chaleeko's questions . . . ) He was clearly an immediate star, with stunning seasons in 1922 and 1923, though he may have been assisted by a friendly home ballpark for the Monarchs. (They changed parks around this time -- I'm pretty sure the details are on the Dobie Moore thread from KJOK, but I haven't had time to cross-check.) Certainlty, the Monarchs dominated the offensive leaderboards during these years without dominating the standings, although they were the best team in the league after the light-hitting Chicago American Giants. Johnson never had seasons as good as those two again, although he remained a star from 1924 to 26. He was slightly above average at best in 1927 and 1928, playing for poor teams in 1928, and he disappears from the records of major teams after that, even though Riley has him playing for the Memphis Red Sox through 1933, and Holway has data for Memphis for most of those seasons.

After the collapse of the Homestead Grays at the end of the 1950 season, Leonard played in the Mexican League from 1951 to 1953. In those three years, he played 227 games and walked 235 times (with only 35 strikeouts).

In other words, he walked more than once a game. The published stats from his Negro League days support the fact that he was walking a ton then too (very very low AB per game ratios).

Basically Leonard was an awesome fastball hitter. His basic batting strategy seems to have been to work the count, laying off breaking stuff out of the zone, while waiting for a fastball to crush.

I think he'll end up looking pretty good.

Mexico League 1951 to 1953, reduced to 154 Games:

Here's a little more on his Cuban League play:

1920-21

The Bacharach Giants entered the Cuban League as the third team (to Habana and Almendares), but despite headline players including Oscar Charleston, Louis Santop, Dick Lundy, and Dick Redding, they were only 4-11 by January 13, when they decided to forfeit all remaining games and return to the U.S.

8 AB, 1 R, 3 H, 0 XBH, 0 SB, .375.

1923-24

Lundy played with Almendares, which placed 3rd of 4 teams, 18-29. This is the year when most of the biggest stars (Charleston, Dobie Moore, Oliver Marcelle, Frank Warfield, Bill Holland, Dave Brown, Jose Mendez) were assigned to Santa Clara, which was 36-11.

90 AB, 11 R, 31 H, 3 2B, 2 3B, 0 HR, .344

1924 (Second season)
With Santa Clara sweeping the regular season, the 1923-24 season was ended early (in mid January), the weakest team was folded, and the players were redistributed for a special second season. This was very competitive, with Lundy's Almendares in 3rd place at 12-13, only 1 game behind first place Santa Clara.

53 AB, 3 R, 13 H, 0 SB, .245

(Bienvenido Jimenez is also listed as a SS with 46 AB, suggesting that Lundy may not have finished the second season.)

1924-25

Lundy is again with Almendares, and John H Lloyd, Oscar Charleston, Newt Allen, Biz Mackey, and Bullet Rogan also join the team, which this time won the title with a record of 33-16. Lundy leads the league in stolen bases with 11.

139 AB, 24 R, 49 H, 11 2B, 2 3B, 3 HR, 11 SB, .353

Note - the season was again ended early because Almendares was running away with the championship. To finish out the season, the players split into "All Cubans" and "All Yankees" squads for a contest between the Cuban and North American players. The "All Yankees" won the series 5-3.

1925-26

Lundy again played with Almendares, but has only 71 AB. John H. Lloyd is listed as the regular SS with 134 AB. Almendares has a 34-13 record, but 12 of the victories represent forfeits by a weak San Jose team. Almendares edges Habana for the title by 2 games.

71 AB, 27 R, 23 H, 1 2B, 0 3B, 0 HR, 0 SB, .324
(These numbers, especially the runs scored, look suspicious.)

1926-27

Miguel Angel (Mike) Gonzalez and Dolf Luque formed a separate league, known as Triangular, taking with them most of the better players. They played at the University of Havana stadium, which appears to have been more hitter friendly than Almendares Park, where most of the Cuban League games were played until 1930. Lundy played for the Alacranes and was one of four .400 hitters (along with Pablo Mesa, George Carr, and Oscar Charleston). With Dolf Luque, George Carr, Judy Johnson, and with Jose Mendez throwing his last victory before his death of tuberculosis, the Alacranes won the pennant in a 3-team league with a record of 22-15.

127 AB, 25 R, 52 H, .410 (extra base hits not recorded)

1927-28

Dick Lundy (and the other players) returned to the Cuban League, where he again played for Almendares. Habana was running away with the pennant, and after Almendares lost a game 18-4 to Habana on January 21, they "withdrew from the league in shame" and forfeited their final 8 games. Final record (including 8 forfeit losses) was 17-23. Other players on Almendares that season included Lloyd (at 1B), Marcelle, George Scales, and Dolf Luque.

137 AB, 26 R, 44 H, 9 2B, 2 3B, 2 HR, 1 SB, .321

1929-30

Lundy was with Almendares again. The Almendares Blues finished in 3rd place (of 4 teams) with a record of 23-26. Martin Dihigo was his most prominent teammate.

195 AB, 28 R, 65 H, 7 2B, 3 3B, 1 HR, .333

1930

The regular season broke down after 5 games because of a contract dispute with the management of the new stadium (La Tropical), so a special season, known as Unico, of 25 total games was held in November in the old stadium (Almendares Park). As I recollect, Manning served two or three years in the war, but I'm not sure about that.

Also, someone please correct me if I have the facts wrong, but I think he might have played minor league ball, but he hurt his arm which ruined his big-league aspirations. 3. Dr. Chaleeko Posted: July 11, 2005 at 01:48 PM (#1463917)
At lunch I was able to gather a little more info from Holway, Riley, and Cisneros.

1) Manning was indeed drafted and served 1943-1945.

2) Riley says he pitched in Cuba from 1946-1949, I assume he means in the CWL. He then spent 1950 in Venezuala in Maricaoba.

3) He finished off his career by pitching two seasons in Mexico, 1951 and 1953.

He went a combined 5-9 in 131.33 innings, sporting ERAs of 3.02 and 4.27 in the two seasons. His H, BB, and K rates seem pretty respectable given the league's propensity to high hit rates and low K/BB rates.

1922-23 - Santa Clara withdrew mid-way through season in protest of a league decision, forfeiting 27 games. Consequently, Charleston (.446) and Oms (.436) didn't qualify for batting championship (Baró, .401)
1923-24 - This Santa Clara team is widely considered the greatest in Cuban League history. Season ended early after team went 36-11, 11.5 games ahead of their nearest rival.
1924w(S) - Special season after regular season ended early.
1924-25 - Led league in average, tied for lead in doubles (with Torriente).
1925-26 - San José withdrew early after going 3-16, forfeiting 25 games.
1926-27(T) - An independent, rival league (Triangular) was formed and signed most of the better players.
1928-29 - Led league in average, setting all-time Cuban League record for highest batting avg (min. 100 AB). Record for most consecutive games hitting safely (30). Tied record for most hits in a game (6). Also led league in at-bats, hits, and doubles.
1929-30 - Led league in average. Record for most consecutive seasons batting .300 or better (8).
1930f - Season ended after 5 games due to a contract dispute over the stadium.
1930f(S) - Special season after regular season ended early.
1931-32 - Led league in runs, hits, and stolen bases. Tied for lead in home runs.
1932-33 - Led league in doubles.
1937-38 - Tied record for most times batting .300 or better in a career (11).

Oms ranked 5th all-time in runs, 10th in doubles, 8th in triples, 2nd in career average (behind Torriente).

A more complex career record than the legend would suggest. Not that it matters that much, I suppose. He has enough value from 1927 to 1937 to merit induction. I'd like to have a more exact account of how Satchel was being used and against whom in the 1940s. His w-l record from those years is not impressive, and his WAT are poor, but he was leading his team in decisions. Was he pitching too much because he was the gate attraction? Was he facing the best pitcher on his opponents' teams every time? (eventually, someone did document that he was doing so to an inordinate degree-ED) Or was Satchel's image just far better than his actual talent during these years?

The following is Paige's Negro League career according to Holway's book *Josh and Satch.* It's clearly based on a less complete set of data than the *complete Book*, but I thought the details about walks, strikeouts, complete games, TRA, and so on would help to fill in gaps. (Note the small differences between this and my compilation of the 1928 season above.)

Spotswood Poles

Brent Posted: October 22, 2005 at 02:11 AM (#1697684)
Spottswood Poles played four winters in the Cuban League: 1910-11, 1912w, 1913w,
and 1914-15. (The winter of 1913-14 no North Americans played in Cuba.) Here is
his record:
Season Team G AB R H 2B 3B HR SB Avg Slg
10-11 Fe 26 89 20 32 5 0 0 - .360 .416
12w Fe 23 86 10 22 1 2 0 11 .256 .314
13w Fe - 151 40 55 3 8 1 21 .364 .510
14-15 Fe 14 57 9 13 0 2 0 4 .228 .298
Total 383 79 122 9 12 1 .319 .413

Notes:
During these four years the Cuban League consisted of only three teams. Most
of the top black American stars of the time played in Cuba at least some of
those winters.
1910-11: Poles led league in doubles; was second in average and slugging behind
Pete Hill.
1913w: Poles led league in at-bats, runs, hits, triples, and slugging. His team
(Fe) won the pennant.

As Gary has reminded us, offensive context is important, so I’ve calculated the
offensive context from the statistics shown in Figueredo’s Cuban Baseball: A
Statistical History, 1878-1961. These batting statistics follow Figueredo in
excluding most pitchers. (Apparently pitchers batting records are included if
they also played in the field, so the batting records for Méndez and Pedroso are
included.) In 1910-11 the ball was still quite dead, but it became more lively
in the following seasons:
Season Lg Avg Lg Slg
10-11 .224 .270
12w .255 .314
13w .276 .336
14-15 .266 .313

Other notes:

It would be really helpful to know what to do with Smith's 1932-1936 years. Riley is a bit inconsistent with regard to how he treats the two NO teams Smith played on as well as with the Monroe Monarchs. On one hand, he doesn't treat them as MiL in the headnotes, but he does suggest in the biography that they are. Either way, Holway has no recorded decisions for Smith from that period.

Smith played for outstanding teams, thus his WAT is not very high.

Riley lists him as going 8-5 in VZ for the 1946 winter season (for the champion team).

Holway's Latin America numbers for Smith:
6-3 in Cuba in 1937.
4-2 in Cuba in 1939.
3-5 in Mexico in 1941, with a 3.88 ERA.
13-11 in Mexico in 1942.

Turkey Stearnes data

Mostly from Holway, with career data from MacMillan 8th & 10th editions.

Teams: 23-31 Det Stars, 32-35 Chi American Giants, 36 Phil Stars, 37 Det Stars, 38-41 KC Monarchs

Park Factors, as far as I know: Detroit played in a hitter’s park, though not an extreme one. The Chi Am Giants park was an extreme pitcher’s park. KC Monarchs’ park, if it is the same as their late 1920s park, probably played as a pitcher’s park.

There’s something odd in Turkey Stearnes’ career record. With only 5 seasons listed as below his career avg., it’s hard to believe that unevenness of games recorded could produce a career avg. that low. Either some of his seasonal averages are his “published” averages rather than statistically documented ones, or Holway’s career data is in error, or something else is strange.

Holway’s listed career totals
107-57, .652 wp
8-4 vs. major-league competition.

From Holway’s listed seasonal records, I count
114-52, .687 wp

10-4-1, .700 wp vs. major-league competition (counts forfeit win as a loss, doesn’t count victory against Rube Marquard & a minor-league squad, does count victory vs. Federal League team, calculates the tie as 1/2 win)

Total score in 13 games with box-scores: 64-36, so Williams’ record is pretty much in line with expectation, given the scoring.

In the 11 seasons for which Holway lists a total run average for Williams, he pitched 107 games. Treating each game as complete, Williams' career TRA comes out at 3.47. (4 of the 11 seasons are the last 4 of Williams' career.)

SMOKEY JOE WILLIAMS PLACEMENTS ON CAREER NGL LEADERBOARDS (1920-1948)

Some quick notes:
1) Wright was born in 1914, per Riley and confirmed by Cisneros, so these seasons represent his age 26-37 seasons.

2) I do not have any park factors available for these seasons, so you're seeing unadjusted numbers.

3) The AVG and SLG for each season are based on pitcher-excluded batting totals, as are the OBP data for seasons 1939 and 1948-1951. Due to time constraints (I'm going to a wedding and moving in the next five days) I used BB data that was already available in the Re-eval NgL Pitchers thread, basing my calcultions on BB/H because it proves easier to use that combo than any others when I have to extrapolate walk rates into NgL seasons.

Pitching Leader Boards

These leader boards are a bit preliminary because I've still have got a few identity questions to resolve and some data-neatening to do (they look pretty rough, I know), but I think I'm close enough along that it won't make a tremendous difference. Also, I don't know if I'll finish it by Monday, so I figured better to post now. If/when any of these change, I'll repost.

Remember, everything is based on Holway's data except where Gary has kindly supplied new data. That means only U.S. league and regional data is supplied for the years 1920-1948. (I may return to the pre-league years in the near future, no promises). This also includes data for the 1931 Negro Southern League because a) Holway supplied complete W-L data and b) a lot of top players were in the league that year. Holway's published career data often conflicts with itself (as Chris and Gary have recently pointed out), and I'm basing % of team decisions strictly on the sum of individual pitchers' wins and losses.

Top 25ish totals are shown for each leaderboard.

Some partial stats for Baseball's greatest unknown - Cannonball Bill Jackman.

1925: 15-2 record in known games for the Philadelphia Giants. Victories over major league pitchers Buck O'Brien (2), King Bader and Earl Hanson. No decisions or saves versus major league pitchers Bump Hadley, Chippy Gaw and Cy Morgan.

1926: 14-6 in known games for the Philadelphia Giants. Victories over major league pitchers Haskell Billings and King Bader. 2-0 record versus Class B New England League teams. 14-strikeout game versus top semi-pro team. 2-hit shutout and 14 K game versus Cape Cod League (with major leaguers) All-Star team.

1927: 18-6 record in known games for the Philadelphia Giants. 3-0 versus opposing pitchers with big league time. 16-K game versus a semi-pro team that had 7 players in the lineup with big league time. 10 or more strikeouts in 7 of 22 known starts.

1928: 12-8 record in known games for Philadelphia Giants. Tossed 3-hit shutout versus Pop Lloyd-lead Lincoln Giants and 2-hit shutout versus Boston Colored Tigers. Lost a one-hitter with 12 K's versus Cape Cod League All-Star team. 3-2 record versus Cape Cod League teams and 1-4 record versus Lincoln Giants. Note that players with professional experience, including many with big league time, were eligible and did play in the Cape Cod League up through 1934.

1929: 16-7 record in known games for the Philadelphia Giants. 0-1 versus Lincoln Giants and 1-0 versus Brooklyn Cubans. Pitched perfect game versus the Philadelphia Red Caps. 15-K, 3-hit shutout versus Cape Cod League all-star team in which Vito Tamulis was the opposing pitcher. Also had 14-K game while pitching for the East Douglas team in the Blackstone Valley League where future major league Hank Greenberg was his first baseman and Gene Desautels was his catcher.

Keep in mind this data just reflects a small portion of Jackman's career, and that he pitched professionally from 1917 to 1952.

Schoolboy Johnny Taylor tossed a no-hitter verus Satchel Paige in the Polo Grounds in 1937. A few years earlier Taylor beat Jackman, 5-4 in 22 innings. In 1938 Taylor told the Boston Chronicle that he win versus Jackman, and not his no-hitter versus Paige, was his biggest accomplishment to date. He also called Jackman a "smarter" pitcher than Paige.

Some pitching data from Shades of Glory (from the HOF's study of Negro League stats for the recently elected class of Negro Leaguers).

Please note that the data begins in 1920 and is limited to the American Negro Leagues (not Mexico or the winter leagues), so I won't report Joe Williams because the best of his career was already over. I've also taken the career data and translated it to 275 IP. I used the ERA and winning percentage from the book, rather than calculating it from the data presented.

I'll try my two pitcher-hitters, Martin Dihigo and Bullet Joe Rogan. The caveats from the previous post about this material only being from post 1920 American summer Negro Leagues and that pitchers are converted to 275 IP hold here. I've also done hitting on a 550 AB basis. ERA, winning percentage, average and slugging are taken from the book rather than calculated from this converted career data.

Some hitting data from Shades of Glory, with career numbers from 1920 (the earliest year of stats given in the book) modified to 550 AB. Average and slugging percentages come from the book rather than calculated from the converted numbers. Also, please note these stats come only from the American Negro Leagues, not winter leagues or Mexico.

Since I initially didn't get it to display very well (at least IMO), I've attached a word document with the same info.

Josh Gibson Data

Seasonal data from Holway

....
1940 .167 for Homestead, part-season only
1940 In Mexico, 43-92, .467, 11 hr (2nd), 65 hr/550 (1st)
1941 In Mexico, 134-368, .374 (2nd); 33 hr (1st), 49 hr/550 (1st)
. Major-league competition, 2 hr

Gibson has some Cuban play, I think, and a number of winter seasons in Puerto Rico, for which data is also available, and I’m sure there are better stats available for his Mexican League seasons, but this is good for a start.

Joshua "Trucutru" Gibson played baseball in Venezuela in 1940 and 1941 in our prior profesional league. He is mentioned as the player with the longest homerun in our baseball, around 570 ft which go out from San Agustin Stadium, crossed one street and land in the backyards of a auto repair garage.
In fact there is similar story in Dominican Republic with a homerun hit in a park beside the sea that landed in a ship property of the dictator Trujillo.
There is not much stats regarding our championships in those times but Gibson is well remember (and beloved) for people who saw him playing here.

The best data I have is from The Negro Leagues Book by Dick Clark and Larry Lester. There are two Negro League seasons without data. I also provided the Cuban Winter League data. Remember, Negro League seasons were often short. We also do not have walk data here, so it's hard to determine just how good he was. Nevertheless, it's clear he wasn't overwhelming in these seasons before he got himself established in the majors.
