Of the Mariners current starting rotation, who would be most likely to throw a no-hitter for the 3rd no-hitter in franchise history? To me, it's a toss-up between the crafty veteran Jamie Moyer (recent C.G. 2-hitter), and the young buck Joel Piniero who can be dominating at times.

Moyer is a bit past his prime, and while sure he COULD do it, I don't see it happening, and I don't see Piniero do it either. Personally, I don't think I've ever really see him "dominate" - he can be good at times, and even very good at times, but not dominating.
I think of anyone on the team, Felix has the best shot, because he 1.) has the right stuff, and once everything comes together, it could happen, and 2.) he's young enough he'll have plenty of opportunities from here on out. Players like Moyer are just a little too old (though no one told Randy that with his Perfect game).

I didn't think Felix was mature enough to possibly pitch a no-hitter this season, but he really showed something with that C.G. today! The thing is I guess you never really know who will do it. I doubt anyone expected Bosio to throw that no-hitter in '93.
I think the Mariners are due though! :)

I have seen Joel when he is on, he could throw a no-no if he has his stuff. I think Felix does have the best stuff and chance to do it though.

I wonder what's wrong with Joel currently?

I think it's probably a combination of a lot of things. He may be a bit overworked, he may be overthrowing, but it's most likely that he's just going through a rough patch. We have to remember that he's not the best pitcher anyway, so we can't expect him to have a sub-4 ERA very often. I think he might be due for a AAA start to boost his confidence.

Moyer is extremely UNlikely to ever get close to a no-no at this point. He puts too many balls in play to get lucky enough to have them all be right at people.
It comes down to Meche and Hernandez for me. Ms fans don't seem to have woken up to realize yet that Meche has turned the corner and is pitching like an ace now.

--Meche has really picked it up in the first half this year. If he can keep it up all season (and he has never combined two good halves before) then I definately want him back next year. He isn't exactly ace material IMO though. His pitches per inning remain too high for him to regularly go deep in games (averaging just a hair over 6 IP per start this year). If he can get more agressive in the strike zone (without getting hit harder naturally) then he can be an ace and has a shot at that no hitter. I agree Moyer has little chance at a no hitter, but he does remain our ace with 13 quality starts to 8 for Gil (some of Meche's would be QS were lost because he couldn't finish the 6th).

I went with King Felix.... mainly because he's got the most potential FOR it, and he's got such a long career ahead of him TO do it.

The pitches per inning thing...that's mostly in his first couple of frames.
Breakdown of his pitch counts per inning:
1 - 24.6
2 - 23.2
3 - 15.5
4 - 14.8
5 - 14.9
6 - 17.7
If he were slightly better coached pre-game, he would solve his pitch count problem IMHO.
Minimally he's a solid #2 or #3 guy right now and I think he's got the chance to be the next Jason Schmidt if he continues to succeed and build his confidence.
I think it would be prudent to offer him a good solid 2 or 3 year contract worth about 6 or 7 mil per year right now and hope he takes it rather than going to FA because he'll probably cost more if you let him get to the market.

I have been pleasantly surprised by Meche's first half this year too. :)

Guess we spoke too soon about Meche. Terrible outing today, D'oh!

He was having a very good outing until the sixth inning...that solo HR aside, they got 2 hits off him and they were both cheapies.
In the sixth inning things came unraveled and I'm not sure exactly why.

Felix Hernandez or Gil Meche

It looks like most people are going with King Felix on this poll so far.

Going with Felix here is a tasty option, but the chances of him actually reaching, let alone finishing the ninth are more than distant. Joel Piņeiro is the only non-phenom in this list that can really dominate a lineup more than twice through the order. One might remember Pineiro's beastly stretch in 2003 when he four-hit the Twins in May and 3-hit the A's and Rangers in July? And then 2 starts later scattered 2 hits to the Tigers over 7 innings?
He's got it. He just needs to finally adjust to being up all night with his 8-month-old daughter. :laugh

Felix.
I didn't think Felix was mature enough to possibly pitch a no-hitter this season This season? That changes things. I ignored Moyer, and thought it less likely for Washburn, since you didn't specify this season in your first post. I don't know who I'd vote for if you meant this season.
