View Full Version : If ______ was caught doing steroids, I'd stop watching baseball.

Is there any player that if it was found out they were on 'roids, you would lose so much faith in baseball, you would stop watching...at least for a while?

I don't know if I would stop watching, but if Greg Maddux or Tom Glavine were caught, it would be pretty crazy. David Eckstein? That would suck too.

I don't know if anybody would make me stop watching. I might be more likely to stop watching simply because I am tired of hearing about them.
If there was one player that might make me consider such drastic action, it probably would be Derek Jeter.

It would tick me off if any of the "fat" guys were discovered to do steroids, or even speed. This list would include but is not limited to, the following:
John Kruk
Tony Gwynn
David Wells
Dmitri Young
Cecil Fielder
Greg Luzinski
Matt Stairs
C.C. Sabathia
I almost forgot, Babe Ruth

yeah if I found out like a Cal Ripken Jr. or a Tony Gwynn used, I'd be very shocked and sad, but I'm not sure I'd stop watching. Roger Clemens or Curt Shilling, or perhaps David Bell.

I personally don't care. I love the game too much.

This reminds me of the old Futurama episode where 1000 years in the future, where baseball was deemed too dull and boring, so they made steroid injection mandatory and it evolved into blernsball.

In order for that to happen, I'd have to be completely shocked and disgusted; a 0-60 type reaction. I'm already on cruise control at 30 mph. Nobody would surprise me at this point with what's available to these players. If you're only looking at players who "bulk up" then you're missing the entire picture.

There is no one in baseball that I am so enrapt of that
it would affect my affection for baseball. Certainly many
more are probably using than the ones we hear about,
just as probably many more than the Black Sox and
Hal Chase were tanking ball games years ago.

It would be no great surprise to me if every ball
player tested positive for steroids just as it would
not shock me if every senator and congressman
had thousands in cold cash in their refrigerators.

It was around the time I was in grade school that
I quit beliving in Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy.

No, more to figure out my priorities.

Kinda like if one of your best friends had passed on, though that may be stretching it a bit. Still, you will have to look back at that person's meaning to you, all the great times you've shared and enjoyed. Now they're gone eternally. There's no reversing the process. It's all in the history books. They're memories and nothing more.

Jeter, Bernie and Mo have been home-grown Yankee maintays for quite awhile now, and along with Posada, much longer than about any other team's players with the same team, with all having played the 1996 season. Honorable mention of course to Houston's own Biggio & Bagwell.

Let's just say it would take a bit of adjusting, my being with my fellow Yankee and other baseball fans, and a few long threads here on BBF. To think that all of those great moments could've been tarnished would be something very difficult to handle. One simple reason why I hope that that day will never come true.

Neither would I. I'd discount the individual's career, and ascribe it to his personal choice. I wouldn't write off an entire sport (the one I care about above and beyond all others) because any one guy got caught doping.

If I found out the World Series was fixed, though, and that there were many previously unrelated complicit parties....now that would be much harder to accept.

Strikes and overcommercialization and seeing the teams I follow lose and lose and lose and Pete Rose apologists and a too-few-team-acknowledging national media haven't chased me off. The steroid scandal is just another problem the sport has come across and will overcome. Anyone who's going to walk away over this after all the blots over the years just really never was a fan to begin with.

I'm more worried of how many major leaguers would use performance enhancers. Say, if 20% or 30% would test positive, I would stop watching because than it wouldn't be baseball anymore. I don't believe it would even be a sport.

Depends on if you consider home run derby a sport. That's pretty much what we have.

20-30%? Sounds low if we're to include all forms of steroids and HGH. If 7% tested positive just for steroids, when they had prior warning of tests, what percent would it have been with no warning..20? 25? Throw HGH into the mix; something not even tested for, I believe the number would blow your mind. Over/Under at 60% sounds conservative to me.
