This is for any serious baseball fan out there who can possibly help me. I am looking for any material on the history of the Memphis Chicks team and possibly players, 1901-1960. Are there any books written on the Chicks and anything on Russwood Park? Very much would like to obtain a copy if possible. I'm very much interested in the history of the Southern Association, and all the teams who played in the league, especially the Chicks.

Thanks,

The perfect book for you is Marshall D. Wright's "The Southern
Association in Baseball 1885-1961". This book is available on
abebooks.com.

This book gives a year by year rundown on each team and also
statistics on each team's individual players. It was published
in 2002 by McFarland & Company, Inc.

As to the Memphis Chicks, they hold the SA record for the
most wins in a season, 104. They accomplished this twice,
in 1921 and 1924.

The 1921 team finished 7 1/2 games ahead of the New Orleans
Pelicans, who featured future HOF pitcher Dazzy Vance, 21-11
for the year, and 14 games up on the Birmingham Barons with
another future HOFer, third baseman Pie Traynor who hit .356
for the year.

I think this book will answer your needs.

Melottfan..

Saw your post. My dad played for the Chicks in 54 and 55. I remember going to spring training and having Luis Aparicio teach me to climb coconut palm trees. Some other interesting players and stories of that era. Let me know if you run across any photos...regards

You might enjoy checking the following website, each one showing one of the old Southern Association teams and/or the old ballparks where they played their games:

Sandoo21:

I'm intrigued as to know who your father was. Could you let me know?
Aparicio was quite a player from what I heard. Bet your father cried when Russwood burned.

The Friends of Rickwood, which maintains Rickwood Field and has a website www.rickwood.com, organizes a Southern Association Reunion Conference each year. You might want to contact them for more information. This year the 3rd annual Conference was held in Chattanooga at old Engel Field, while the first two were held in Birmingham at Rickwood. In 2007 the Conference returns to Rickwood and in 2008 will be held in Nashville. Each Southern Association city has been represented at each Conference, and I believe you would enjoy meeting others that share your interest for Russwood Park and the Memphis Chicks as most of the attendees share photos, programs, jerseys, etc.

This is John Guinozzo. I am the author of the Memphis Baseball Encyclopedia. Would you like to order copy of the MBE?
The encylopedia is a 164-page book that reports Memphis baseball from 1877 (first professional team) to the present. It has player statistics of every player played in Memphis plus stories, stats and photos of teams, Memphis' ball parks, etc.

Mr. Guinozzo, I am interested in a copy of your book. My grandfather is believed to have played for Memphis sometime in the 1910 to 1918 era, but we have no confirmation of this. Could you please e-mail me off-line at mbbole@charter.net?

Hey Folks:

Been a while since i was last on. In August of 2006, my family and I lost everything due to a apartment fire that put my son and I in the hospital with injuries,(his was minor). I lost all my baseball items, books, autographs photos and the like. I am putting my collection back together. Would anybody know where I can get any photos of the Chicks? It can be teams or individuals. Have checked e-bay with no success. Appreciate what you can
suggest.
