Inspired by Jake83, who is the most popular current Twins player?

Got to be Johan. Joe Mauer is a hometown favorite but hasn't been with the Twins long enough. Torii Hunter's popularity has been sliding for the past couple of years.

I voted for Mauer too mainly because he's the one everybody is talking about at the moment. If it turns out he's just a flash-in-the-pan that might change, but that doesn't seem like it's going to be the case.

I would go for Mauer because everyone is so amazed by what he is doing.

But Lirano got to be up there too for how great he is pitching as well.

And Johan Santana is always a fan favorite.

Tough choice to pick.

Justin Morneau is my personal favorite.

Santana is my favorite, but it might be Maurer with the Twins faithful since he is a home boy.

Although Santana is dominating, he is only out there every 5th day, or so. For that reason, I select Joe Mauer. I would not be surprised to see him lead the Twins to the AL wild card! :D

it's really daft if you think anything but Mauer

Got to be Mauer, hes a hometown guy, plays in a leadership position, and has that All-american Tom Brady look.

I would say to the general public that Tori Hunter is probably the most well known guy, to guys who only watch sportscenter every couple of days a week. The casual of casual fans.

Santana, in alot of peoples opinions the best pitcher in baseball.

I think alot of casual fans never think of pitchers when they think of favorites because they think of hitters when alot of pitchers would be good hitters if they got paid to hit... but they don't...

Theres no way Liriano is the most popular Twin right now. He hasnt played enough. Maybe in time, not now.

In regards to "which player is the most popular", I think it's Joe Mauer hands down, but if you ask who is the best or most valuable player, I think you would get very different responses.

Most Popular:
Mauer
Hunter
Santana

Most Valuable (or best player based on position and stats):
Morneau
Santana
Nathan
Mauer

How do you go by position and then put Nathan above Mauer?

Mauer in a landslide, at least in the Twin Cities. There is some backlash because of the way most of the local press fawns over him, but he's extremely popular - more for being a hometown boy than for his play, though. He was extremely popular even before he was in the majors.

Nathan is the best closer in the game of baseball!

Mauer might be the best young catcher in baseball, but he's still young and although VERY good, not "money in the bank" quite like Nathan. I think the hype surrounding Mauer has created a "superman-like" image that may not be entirely realistic. In the next few years, he'll be hitting 20+ taters and driving in 100+ runs to go along with his .330+ average, but he's still not there. Don't get me wrong, he's probably the 2nd best catcher in baseball at the ripe old age of 23, but I just didn't find him to be as valuable as the others (my opinion ONLY).

Nathan is definetly up there but IMO not the best closer in the game. I rank Mo, Hoffman, Wagner, and K-Rod ahead of him.

I'm going to go with Pat Neshek.

Yes, Nathan IS the best closer in baseball.

The point of this is who is the most popular, not who is the most valuable. Even then, its ludicrous to think a closer is more valuable than a catcher, if thats what you are saying.

Value does not equal Popularity - Mauer is more popular Nathan. Easily.

Mauer has to be the most popular by far because he is a local hometown boy made good, he's young and good looking, he's a nice guy and a darn good ballplayer!

You seem to be very disturbed by the notion that Nathan could possibly be more valuable than Mauer. Don't get me wrong, I do not believe that a pitcher should ever be considered for the AL/NL MVP, but when it comes to a team's MVP, I look at entirely different. I want to know which player would have the biggest impact on his teams overall record when he is not playing. We would probably all have a different view on this, but Redmond was a more than adequate replacement while the others positions create a dark hole without the stars. The Twins bullpen is great, but it's great because they can all serve the roles designated for them.

Morneau out of the lineup for 162 games may mean 14-20 fewer wins.
Santana being replaced for his 35 starts may mean 10-12 fewer wins.
Nathan not available to close/pitch games may mean 8-14 fewer wins.
Mauer out of the lineup for 162 games may mean 8-12 fewer wins.

He's the reason I got a standing room ticket to watch the Tigers play the Twins this year. It was worth it, but I was hoping the Tigers would win. :D

Does anyone think he'll go to another team in the next few years? I'd love for us to get him.

I would say Rondell White.
