"Griffey, bidding for a 13th All-Star appearance, has been elected to more Midsummer Classic appearances than any player except Hall of Famers Cal Ripken Jr. (17) and Rod Carew (15)."

Willie Mays - 20
Stan Musial - 20
*Cal Ripken Jr. - 19* Heck, he couldn't
*Rod Carew - 18* even get these guys right
Carew Yastrzemski - 18
Pete Rose - 17
Ted Williams - 17
Mickey Mantle - 16
Yogi Berra - 15
Tony Gwynn - 15
Al Kaline - 15
Brooks Robinson - 15
Ozzie Smith - 15
Johnny Bench - 14
Reggie Jackson - 14
Warren Spahn - 14
Barry Bonds - 13

The key term is elected. While all those players did indeed get selected to those games, whether or not the fans voted them in is a different story. What mlb.com said very well could be accurate.

When did they go back to letting the fans vote? Wasn't it around 1970?

That sounds about right. That was the year Rico Carty got in as a write-in vote.
