Maybe I'll ponder it further over a half-full (or half-empty ) glass of beer

I've heard it called both
Called the Fair Pole because it is in fair territory, the foul pole because it determines what is fair and foul

Everytime I hear someone say fair pole (like nails on a chalkboard), I want to ask them, "Then why don't you call the foul line the "fair line?!" At least be consistant!

Coaches' boxes are NOT boxes. They are lined on three sides, not four.

If you add beer to an empty glass, it's half-full. If you have a full glass, and drink half of the contents, the glass is half-empty.

If you drink half the glass of beer, it isnt half full... its twice the size it needs to be

If you only drink half the glass of beer something is wrong with you.......Unless it is American beer then you should be awarded for drinking Half.

The pole's creation and extension had to do with Ruth and the ability to tell if his long drives were fair or foul.
Balls that were hooking, even if they hit the pole, were called foul. Any ball that hooked around the pole and landed in the seats in foul territory, as it related to the pole, was deemed foul. Shots over the Polo Grounds roof that the umpire predicted to land foul, were called foul.
Look for book called "Babe Ruth: Fact Transcends Myth" by Bill Jenkinson. In it, he breaks down why he feels Babe should have retired with over 1100 homers.
