Penn will work out with the Orioles' extended spring training group in Florida before likely heading back to the minors.

Chris Gomez (hand) has reportedly begun to swing a bat.
Gomez said Tuesday that he expects to return from the disabled list in about two weeks.

Who will go down when Gomez comes back? I hope it's not Fahey.
Chelle

I know that when Gibby comes off the DL they are looking to send a pitcher down (CHEN! CHEN!). We've got a big problem in the next few weeks in that we've got Gomez, Penn and Newhan coming back so we've got a few people that are going to have to go.
My guess? Rogers will go first (on the return of Gomez). Depending on how Loewen pitches he might get sent down on the return of Penn...but that's debatable (otherwise...maybe one of the pen guys). On Newhan's return...if EVER...Fehey would go down. But that would be probably after the trade deadline...so all this could be changed.

Infielder Chris Gomez has been swinging a fungo bat since Tuesday to test his left hand, which he broke May 10. He'll continue the drill for a week, then spend another week hitting off a tee.
"That will put me at six weeks and I'll be able to do all baseball stuff, ground balls, hitting off pitching," he said.
Asked if he will be ready to come off the 60-day disabled list when eligible, Gomez said, "No doubt."
Chelle
06-09-2006, 11:20 AM
Manager Sam Perlozzo said he's unsure whether Jay Gibbons will be ready to come off the disabled list Sunday, "but I'd think he's going to be very, very close."
Perlozzo might stay with 13 pitchers after Gibbons returns until the interleague series against the New York Mets that begins June 16, when he'd want an extra hitter. ...

Chen might go and Loewen needs more seasoning. When Newhan comes back,he deserves some playing time. I hope that Fahey doesn't have to go but the numbers and positions might not leave the O's a choice. I'm sure Rogers would go first.
Looks like it will be quite awhile before these decisions will have to be made.

That's not good. Who's the backup third baseman? Ed Rogers or Fahey? I doubt Conine plays there any more.
Chelle

Conine plays 1B for Millar when Millar is tired from eating. Fehey played 3B today and did a pretty good job. He made some great catches. Not bad for the kid.

Actually, I'm warming on Millar. I've notice (when the games are on T.V.) that he's always one of the first out of the dugout to congrats his teammates (playing or not) and he's been doing better hitting as of late.
He had a few good plays in the field. I wonder if it just took him a bit to heat up. I no longer lump him in the Matos/Conine crew. He's not my favorite but I'd rather see him play at 1B every day then see Conine ever take the field again.

I expected to see his name in the transaction column today but nothing yet. I wonder if they're looking at the waiver wire for anyone who might help. I noticed that Sunny Kim can veto his demotion by the Rockies and become a free agent. He couldn't do worse than Chen. Maybe we could pry Rick Bauer away from the Rangers!

Tonight while I was waiting for the game to start (in between World Cup and baseball....I love this time of year)...they had an Orioles All Acess show on. Millar was hysterical. He was having such a good time with the fans. It was the coverage from fan photo day on the Sunday before the Yankee's game. He made a point of talking to every fan in the line and taking a photo with them. He got MAD respect from me for that.
Also, B-Rob took time to go down the whole line.
The fans waited (I know cause many were my friends) several hours to be the first 5,000 in to get their picture taken. So, when the players skip over them to hurry to the end. They are really upset.
Miggy came out and skipped down the line and only took a few photos. Again, typical of "big star ego".
Millar is rapidly earning respect points.

Jay Gibbons (hip, knee) is reportedly expected to return from the disabled list Sunday.
Chelle
06-10-2006, 07:33 PM
Well, Melvin's had a good game so far...but it looks like from his last swing that he may have reinjured himself. Sammy came out to check him out. He took some practice swings and then struck out.
Let's see if he comes back in at defense or if Sammy sits him.

I'm surprised that Chen hasn't been moved or put on the D.L. with some kind of arm problem. A few more bad appearances and they'll have to do something. I actually don't dislike him but the business of baseball doesn't allow a totally unproductive player to keep a roster spot. Maybe they're waiting for Penn to be Ok'd for service.
Chelle
06-11-2006, 10:35 AM
Jay Gibbons (hip, knee) is expected to be activated from the disabled list on Monday.
"The main reason is he's not 100 percent, and [the Twins] have [Francisco] Liriano going," manager Sam Perlozzo said. Ed Rogers is expected to be sent down when Gibbons is activated.
Bad call sending a bench player down when we're carrying an extra pitcher. I know Sammy doesn't want to put Chen on waivers (like some idiot team is really going to pick him up)...but we've got to get rid of one of these extra pitchers.
Chelle
06-11-2006, 02:07 PM
Even though Jay Gibbons' return from the disabled list is almost a certainty on Monday, the Orioles still haven't decided whose roster spot the outfielder will take. The logical solution seems to be a pitcher, most likely a long reliever.
Manager Sam Perlozzo hinted on Sunday that southpaws Bruce Chen and John Halama, who have both started at least one game this season, may be two leading candidates.
Chelle
06-12-2006, 09:32 AM
The Orioles are reportedly considering releasing John Halama once Jay Gibbons (hip, knee) is ready to return from the disabled list.
The most obvious choice for release at this point might be Bruce Chen, but manager Sam Perlozzo said Sunday that Chen's job is secure.
JohnGelnarFan
06-12-2006, 03:53 PM
Chen's one inning of scoreless relief might have saved him.Halama has been getting bombed lately and his recent history has been filled with releases.
Chelle
06-12-2006, 04:52 PM
Sadly, he stays.
Gibbons was activated today.
Orioles optioned infielder Ed Rogers to Triple-A Ottawa.
Rogers went 0-for-3 in his latest stint with the Orioles. That the infielder is getting sent down means John Halama will keep his roster spot for now.
JohnGelnarFan
06-12-2006, 05:01 PM
Ed Rogers must feel like a yo-yo. He might be another Manny Alexander, who was the AAA shortstop when Cal was playing. There have been a few others like him in the O's past.
Chelle
06-12-2006, 05:08 PM
Yeah. I guess they just didn't want to outright release Halama. (Which was the other choice). Ah well. It's coming because we have a bunch of others coming back.
JohnGelnarFan
06-12-2006, 05:35 PM
Halama won't be here long.He might get one more chance. He and Chen can't have anymore bad outings in the upcoming games.......Millar gets another hit! He must be over .250 now. :gt

On the mend: Chris Gomez is halfway into his 60-day stay on the disabled list, and Perlozzo said he's healing quicker than expected. The utilityman broke his hand on May 10 and is already swinging a bat.
"He's gonna be cleared in about a week to start hitting off a tee," Perlozzo said. "Problem with him [is] he's on the 60-day and he doesn't come off until the [12th] of July. So he's going to beat his 60 days."
JohnGelnarFan
06-12-2006, 06:41 PM
I think Fahey is giving the O's more than Gomez did. He's not a bad utility player but we can't keep them both. Would you send Fahey down when Gomez comes back?
Chelle
06-12-2006, 06:43 PM
"As long as Brandon is out in left field and in the lineup doing OK, then we can drop everybody. I kind of like the looks of that," Perlozzo said. "If Brandon's in there and he continues to do well, I think it's a good move. If he's not or there's a left-hander, we can move it back up."
Who cares if there is a left-hander????
Sammy is stuck on that lefty thing.
JohnGelnarFan
06-12-2006, 06:49 PM
Fahey looks pretty good in left but he's not the answer out there. He's a nice backup in a few spots but we need a legitimate leftfielder with some punch. Maybe they'll deal for one before the deadline. We don't need an old guy for one season either. Reggie Sanders is always available if that's what you want.
Chelle
06-12-2006, 07:26 PM
I don't see Peter dealing for anything. Who knows. He's to much a creature of his own hype. Plus...we have no money and not really a lot to trade. Unless we can convince someone that Chen is really a good deal (you think anyone will buy it?)
JohnGelnarFan
06-12-2006, 07:32 PM
The only team that seems to believe that is ours! I think you're right though. Who do we have to offer that's not one of our prize young guys.

Maybe they were all glued to their TV screens. They're out there somewhere. Time to watch Chick Hernandez on the wrapup show. I coached him in summer league baseball when he was a kid.He was a few years behind me at our high school. He was just Carlos then. What kind of a name is Chick??
Chelle
06-13-2006, 09:33 AM
Maybe he's trying to get in on the whole "bird" theme?
The Orioles released 1B Alejandro Freire.
Signed to a minor league contract after hitting .246/.319/.338 with the Orioles last season, Freire had been playing at Triple-A Ottawa. :waving

Jay Gibbons said Monday that his knee felt "a little weak" in his first game back from the disabled list.
Gibbons is expected to play right field Tuesday after serving as the Orioles' designated hitter Monday. "I don't know if I'm going to feel it the rest of the year," Gibbons said. "I don't know if I'm going to feel it for a month. Things happen. I don't think it's going to be a big issue, but we'll see."
Chelle
06-13-2006, 06:03 PM
Jay played 3 innings and then was pulled from tonights game. Guess he wasn't ready.
Chelle
06-14-2006, 05:05 AM
Jay Gibbons will go back on the disabled list Wednesday after aggravating his right knee during Tuesday's game.
"You can't play at 70 percent, and I'm getting to learn that," Gibbons said. "I've played hurt a lot before in the past, but if you can't run and you can't cut, it states the obvious. I really need to get this thing better. I injured it trying to tag up. It just kind of totally went out on me, and then it was just done." Jeff Conine and Brandon Fahey will resume getting extra at-bats while Gibbons is out.

06-14-2006, 11:49 AM
Don't forget Matos,Chelle! Who's replacing Gibbons on the roster? I saw that Tony Batista was designated for assignment by the Twins yesterday but we might as well stick with kids from our own system.
Chelle
06-14-2006, 08:26 PM
After tonights bonehead play? I could never forget Matos. He needs to be shipped out of B-more ASAP.
First, he looked like Charlie Brown looking up and around for a ball that almost hit him in the head.
Second, anyone who this far into the season is still under the Mendoza line really needs to be kicked from the team (please let me kick him! please???)
Argh! Matos....:grouchy
Chelle
06-14-2006, 08:29 PM
Rogers will likely be with the team for the foreseeable future, because Gibbons is likely out another three weeks and the Orioles need some extra position players to finish out their schedule in Interleague Play. Baltimore heads to New York's Shea Stadium next, where fresh legs will help the team more than an emergency catcher.
That's why Rogers was tabbed instead of Raul Chavez, who may rejoin the parent club sometime in late June. The Orioles are currently playing with a 13-man pitching staff, which Perlozzo said will likely change in the next few days.
JohnGelnarFan
06-15-2006, 01:08 PM
Matos might be changing your mind like Millar is doing. :crazy He's UP to .198 with his 2-3 performance. Are you sure that he's the one that should go? If Perlozzo cuts back the pitching staff,I think it will be Halama.
Chelle
06-15-2006, 02:59 PM
Do I think Matos should go....yes. But, when the time comes I think Sam will get rid of Halama. Especially since we're going into an interleague marathon with the NL. We need bench players.
JohnGelnarFan
06-16-2006, 01:07 PM
I agree. Matos has good games ocassionally and is a 5 tool player. I've seen all 5 at one time or another. He got a hit,he hit a homer,he ran with speed,he made a catch and then made a throw.
Halama appears to have lost everything needed to be a major league pitcher.
Chelle
06-20-2006, 05:16 PM
Newhan will eventually go out on a rehab assignment in the Minor Leagues, which could take two weeks or more. It's like a midseason Spring Training, necessitated by all the time he's spent on the pine. The Orioles don't expect Newhan back until after the All-Star break or the end of July. Until then, Fahey and Rogers will get some run in the outfield.

Melvin Mora is day-to-day with a bruised left knee after being hit by a Dontrelle Willis pitch on Tuesday.
It was the left knee again, but it wasn't Sunday's injury causing him more trouble. If Mora can't play on Tuesday, Ed Rogers could start at third base. J

Chris Gomez, who suffered a broken bone in his left hand on May 10, has been cleared to take live batting practice on Friday.
Gomez probably would have been ready to return right about now had the Orioles let him. However, the decision was made when he was hurt to put him on the 60-day disabled list. As a result, he won't be activated until after the All-Star break.
JohnGelnarFan
06-23-2006, 11:04 AM
Gomez is a reliable utility man. He's more of a late inning defensive replacement or pinch hitter. There isn't much opportunity for him to play in the infield with our every day 2B,SS and 3B. He might get a few starts at first base,if they keep Conine in the outfield. He's good insurance in case of an injury.
Chelle
07-02-2006, 02:20 AM
Manager Sam Perlozzo said pitchers Hayden Penn , Tim Byrdak and Ryan Keefer are expected to join Single-A Aberdeen "pretty soon," with Penn possibly ready for a rehabilitation start around July 9.

"We expect him to be out the rest of the year," Duquette said

Javy Lopez is unavailable for Saturday's game due to a stiff neck.
He was only going to be used as a pinch-hitter anyway. The Orioles don't trust Lopez at first base and they wanted Ramon Hernandez to catch all three games this weekend.

07-02-2006, 11:41 AM
Luckily,Conine,Roberts and Markakis have been scorching the ball lately and will help to offset the loss of Lopez this weekend. Markakis has had two 4 hit games this week and Conine has hit near .500 in his last 25 at bats. He's been robbed of a few hits as well.

Patterson sits: Corey Patterson was out of the lineup for Sunday's game after fouling a ball off his right foot during Saturday's game, but he is not expected to miss any extended period of time.
Patterson has been keeping the tender foot iced and will undergo X-rays as a precautionary measure. However, the Baltimore outfielder does not expect to be out of the lineup for more than a day or two.
"I think I'll be OK, it just got me in a good spot last night," Patterson said. "I've done it before actually in the same spot and with the same result. It just needs to be treated and iced."

With Nick Markakis playing well in right field, the Orioles may use Jay Gibbons (knee) at designated hitter once he returns from the disabled list.

Chris Gomez (hand) is expected to come off the disabled list Thursday.

They could use him. I just looked up their team stats and the staff ERA is 6.19 I also looked up Canseco's stats for Long Beach and he's 1-10 with 8 K's!

He's day-to-day. The Orioles have Jeff Conine starting at DH tonight.

Newhan in town -- but not for long: Outfielder David Newhan was back in Baltimore on Monday for a doctor's appointment, but he will be returning to his home in California soon.
Newhan, who fractured his right fibula sliding into second base on an attempted steal in mid-April, said he is feeling good.
"I'm happy with the way it's progressing," Newhan said. "The next step now is kind of pushing things, getting a little more aggressive with things."
Newhan said he's focused on trying to get back to 100 percent and does not yet know when or where his rehabilitation assignment will be.
"The plans are to kind of go back home and continue treatment and therapy with the people I was working with out in San Diego a couple more weeks," he said. "Then I'll come out here and hopefully at that point maybe we can be talking about a rehab assignment."

In his first rehab outing for Single-A Aberdeen, reliever Tim Byrdak (elbow) allowed one run and two hits and struck out three in an inning of work.

I liked what I saw of Byrdak when he was here. If I remember correctly,he walked too many but seemed to get the job done. We can use a good middle reliever.

Manager Sam Perlozzo said Monday that Jay Gibbons (knee) is likely 5-7 days away from working out with the team.
Once he does that, a minor league rehab stint should be right around the corner. Gibbons has been on the disabled list since June 13.

Jay Gibbons (knee) rejoined the Orioles to continue his rehab on Friday. He could begin a rehab assignment as soon as Sunday.
"I feel like it's game ready," Gibbons said. "I tested it as much as I could. I didn't want to come back until I was ready." He'll probably play some first base at Double-A Bowie. With Nick Markakis playing well in right, the Orioles could use Gibbons as a designated hitter and first baseman for the rest of the season.

Are his injuries all from running into the right field wall? We can always use his bat. I hope it's not too rusty. He got off to a nice start this year.

Yeah, back in late may he pulled something in his knee when he ran into the wall. He came back for like two days and repulled the injury. He's rehabbing Sunday at Bowie if you want to go see him.

Brandon Fahey was unavailable Sunday after injuring his right hand Saturday.
Fahey hurt the hand while sliding into second base and it's been diagnosed as a sprain. Manager Sam Perlozzo said Sunday that Fahey will probably miss "a couple days."

That's not good news. We sure could use a .286 hitting outfielder with 2 doubles to fill in right now.........

Orioles placed LHP Kirk Birkins on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 30, with left elbow neuritis.
Birkins had given up seven runs in his last four appearances, taking his ERA from 3.07 to 4.94. Julio Manon will replace him in the bullpen.

David Newhan (leg) is expected to begin baseball activities on August 4.
Newhan has been on the disabled list since April 19 with a fractured right fibula and could begin a minor league rehab assignment relatively soon.

Kris Benson could go on the disabled list after experiencing a setback while throwing on the side Tuesday.
Benson, who had hoped to pitch against the Yankees this weekend, is still feeling pain in his elbow. "It didn't go as good as he had hoped," manager Sam Perlozzo said. The Orioles are currently planning to start Bruce Chen again on Saturday.

David Newhan's rehab has been delayed a week after he said he wasn't 100 percent ready to start baseball activities.
Newhan (leg) was scheduled for a doctor's examination this week to determine if he was ready to begin working out with the Orioles and start a rehab assignment. He's out indefinitely.

Maybe Newhan should just wait until next year. Fahey is doing a nice job and any reaccurance of his injury late in the year might end his career.

Fahey is doing a great job. I hear Palmer say today that because of the weird schedule with Toronto that Miggy might DH one day next week and Fahey might play short.
Let me tell you Fahey can do it all, he's a great utility player. Didn't even miss Gomez.

Fahey is turning into quite a good defensive outfielder too. Playing multiple positions will only increase his value to the team. He's been one of the nice surprises this year.
