Brandon Erbe fanned 10 while allowing one hit in five scoreless innings for low Single-A Delmarva on Tuesday.
The 18-year-old Erbe is 4-3 with a 2.04 ERA, 37 H and 65/14 K/BB in 53 IP this season. That kind of command, combined with an outstanding fastball, has already turned him into a top pitching prospect.

Nice research Chelle. Have you ever been to a game at Delmarva? I haven't but remember driving through there on the way to Ocean City, years ago. I'll never forget it because there was a sign, entering the town, that said "Home Of DeLino Deshields"! :gt

Scranton is a five-hour drive, you know. New York is four. D.C. is one. Philly is one and a half. Pittsburgh is four. Cleveland is five. Oh, and Baltimore is under an hour. Unless you're really intent on seeing Luis Terrero and Val Majewski play, then I recommend that you either go to Bowie or one of the MLB cities I named above.

Um. Hi. You must be new to baseball.
1. I know exactly how far each of these cities are (being an adult and having lived here for the majority of my life)
2. I don't want to see Yankees, Mets, Nationals, Phillies, Pirates, Inidans...unless they are playing the Orioles.
3. I go to the minor league games to see rehab starts of my favorite players

The Orioles are close to signing 2006 first-round draft pick Bill Rowell and a deal could be announced early next week when the club returns from its road trip.
Rowell, an infielder from Bishop Eustace Preparatory School in New Jersey, was the ninth overall selection in last week's draft. The deal will likely be slightly less than the $2 million contract that Drew Stubbs, the No. 8 overall pick, is expected to sign with the Cincinnati Reds.
"We're close," Orioles scouting director Joe Jordan said. "I don't foresee any problems or anything. Sometime here in the next few days, we'll wrap this up."
Rowell, a high school shortstop who projects as a third baseman or corner outfielder in the pros, will report to short-season Single-A Bluefield when signed.
Jordan said that the Orioles are also finalizing deals with their sandwich pick, Pedro Beato, a right-handed pitcher from St. Petersburg Junior College, and third-round selection Zachary Britton, a high school pitcher from Texas.
They have already signed: Tyler Henson (fifth round), Joshua Tamba (seventh round), Jedidiah Stephen (eighth round), Brett Bordes (ninth round) and Anthony Martinez (11th round).

1. What I was trying to say was that Scranton, just because it's in Pennsylvania, is not all that much closer than Ottawa. I like Ottawa, because I am Canadian and have relatives there.
2. That's what I was trying to imply. Sorry if it wasn't clear.
3. Well, from what I know, many players make their rehab starts in Bowie.
4. And Scranton is too. Plus, there's things that you could do in Ottawa, as it's the capital of Canada. No disrespect to Scranton, but Ottawa is a more interesting city IMO, in case you want to stay a few days and watch more than one game.

Draftee Beato signs
Orioles supplemental first-round pick Pedro Beato signed for a $1 million bonus this week and attended yesterday's game at Camden Yards.
Beato, 6 feet 5, played catch on the field and flashed the powerful right arm that produced 96-mph fastballs for St. Petersburg Junior College.
The Mets drafted Beato in 2005 out of a New York high school and tried to sign him before this year's draft. But he went back into the draft, knowing he would be a higher pick and make more money. Many draft observers thought he was a steal for the Orioles.
Beato described himself as a power pitcher and said he has modeled himself after Roger Clemens. He said he's entirely recovered from Tommy John surgery, which he had during his junior season in high school.
"I have all my strength back," he said. "I'm throwing 4 mph more than what I did before I got the surgery."

Tommy John surgery as a junior in high school? It's amazing how far sports medicine has come. In the old days,he would have been washed up before he graduated. Hopefully, the organization will handle him properly and we'll see him in the majors one day. You never know with draftees in baseball.

Zach Britton was in the booth with Palmer and Hunter tonight. He seems like a real nice kid with a level head. He flies to Bluefield tomorrow. He was supposed to throw before batting practice but the results of his tests hadn't been approved until after batting practice. He said he never wants to see another needle. He's only had a few warm-up sessions since pitching his last high school game at the end of May so he'll need to get himself back into game shape. He also said that the team that showed the most interest was the Nationals.

Keith Reed seems to be maturing,at least as far as his stats are concerned. He was a streaky power hitter that struck out too much at Bowie. He's hitting over .290 with 29 doubles and just 5 homers at Ottawa but has only struck out 42 times in over 300 at bats. That's impressive.

The only team in action tonight were the Delmarva Shorebirds, and thus with them needing to entertain fans of the entire organization they went out and did just that. After starting pitcher David Hernandez was banged up, the bullpen took over and did a masterful job, while the offense came alive late to tie the game and send it into extra innings. Quincy Ascencion then got a rally started in the 11th with his team leading third hit and scored the eventual winning run in a come from behind, 7-6 win over Lexington.

If only the whole farm system could have a night like Jake Duncan. The Frederick RF went 4-5 with a double and a homer, but the Keys pitching was worse than Wilmington's in a 13-10 loss. Radhames Liz worked six scoreless innings Sunday in his debut for Double-A Bowie.
He struck out five. Liz was 6-5 with a 2.82 ERA, 57 H and 95/44 K/BB in 83 IP for Single-A Frederick. It's possible that he'll receive the Daniel Cabrera treatment and get rushed to the majors in the first half of next year. However, even though he's 23, he's still something of a raw talent.

Another young pitcher the Orioles are watching in Ottawa is Hayden Penn, who is scheduled to start Wednesday. Penn was called up May 21 to start for the Orioles, but then had appendicitis, and was placed on the disabled list the next day. Wednesday would be Penn's first start since his bout with appendicitis.
"The biggest thing for Hayden is conditioning -- from being in a medical situation where he wasn't able to do as much running and getting in the sort of physical condition he needs to be in to be effective," Perlozzo said. "The more time he gets, I'm sure the better he's going to be physically."
Perlozzo didn't give a definite answer when asked if Penn would be with the team before the season ended.

I'd rather have Eli. I can't seem to find fielding stats for the minor league team.
However, in 2005 when Eli was with us in 9 games played (33.2 innings) he had a 3.86 CERA (which I don't put much stock in) but 2 errors (which I do put stock in) and 1 CS.
In 2006 when Raul was up with us for 6 games (24 innings) he had a 6 CERA (but our pitching was horrific and most of those were with Rodrigo/Chen) and 0 E but 0 CS.
So, since they both seem about the same defensively from their MLB numbers...I'd check their minor league numbers (which I don't have access to, damn them! damn them!) then decide by offensive numbers.

Frederick had their bats working as they easily got past Wilmington tonight, 8-3. Delmarva tied the game late on a grand slam from Stu Chiaravalotti in the eighth inning, but their bullpen gave up three in the 11th against Augusta. Aberdeen was doubled up by Brooklyn and Bluefield got a big ninth inning capped off by a bases loaded double from Billy Rowell to beat Burlington.
Good to see brian pitching well....perhaps if needed we could call him up in an emergency. Platoon pitching?

Ugh. I was throwing things around my house. I think I used the F word a record amount of times today.
