Last night marked more than Dodgers Cy Young closer Eric Gagne's first save in a year, following two surgeries, it also marked a first in MLB history: an all-Canadian battery. Montreal native Russell Martin caught Gagne in the 9th inning against the Mets. Martin and Gagne actually went to the same high school in Montreal, Quebec, and have become the first Canadian battery ever in the majors.

Montrealers pride in SoCal! :clapping :clapping

Gagne said he enjoyed Martin as a catcher because he could speak French with him.

So between the late Expos and Toronto, there was never an all-Candian battery? Not even in Interleague?

How many Canadian catchers are there? I can only think of Martin and Pete LaForest of the DRays (currently with the Padres' organization)

I wish I were still in Montreal to see what kind of coverage this story got, especially in the french media.

Augustin Gus, if you read this can you fill me/us in?

My bet is they either completely ignored it, or started gushing and all of the sudden pretended they were baseball fans after years of writing about how worthless the Expos were.

I don't know what you were trying to say but here's what it came out to:

The Los Angeles a female Quebecker.

The Women's Softball College World Series 1st Round had better ratings than the 1st game of the Stanley Cup Finals.....

I found that HILARIOUS, and it is more proof why hockey should just fold or move all of its teams to Canada, because no one else cares about it

Apparently you're one of the few... I hate hockey myself, but its not as bad as soccer

I was at the Lexington Legends game last night

I wouldn't say that. Hockey is alive and well here in Los Angeles and all over the U.S.. The Finals ratings are more a result of being on OLN all year instead of ESPN/ABC, which is on channel 4,736 on my cable system. :laugh

BIG mistake IMO that whole OLN deal as far as marketing and overall exposure of the NHL.

Imagine the World Series being moved to HGTV.

Why couldn't they just make NBC televise all the games?

The World Series would still do well on HGTV.... not many places care about hockey, except nortern cities in the US, the 2 cities of the teams in the finals, and Canada...

In Louisville, which is one of the biggest cities in the US, hockey got about 1/10th of a page on the sports section... the scores from the night before and standings... the same amount of space that arena football received

The lockout was the deathblow to hockey, and guys like Jeremy Roenick didn't exactly convert any new fans to the sport.

Back to the topic at hand, I'm a bit confused as to what the French statement meant.

un Québécois - male
une Québécoise - female
des Québécois - plural

Hence the confusion.

Well, I know that high school newspaper in Montreal that our battery graduated from will certainly take note next fall - and with well-deserved pride!

I believe there's another Canadian with the Padres. George Kottaras (sp?) is actually a pretty good prospect. His background is Greek, of course, and he played for Greece during the 2004 Olympics.

Hockey doesn't translate well to television..never has..the game is much too fast.

When did Louisville become a big city

When did Louisville become a big city

Jake83:

A couple of years ago (I think it was) Louisville merged with
Jefferson County, KY. This caused the population of the city
to increase, but the metro area was unchanged.

Thus Louisville now has 600,000 population while Birmingham
is under 250,000 but the metros are about the same.

Of course, compared to LA, Louisville and Birmingham are
both pretty small.
