How do you figure? Going off of percentages?

Corey Patterson?

Yeah, before this year I wouldn't agree. But after seeing him play so far this season he is really valueable. He pretty much created a run last weekend vs. the yankees all by himself. He stole second and third easily. Right now I doubt there are many players I'd rather have on base when the games on the line.

Most dangerous to do what? Steal 2B? Steal 3B? Go from 1st to 3rd on an infield single? Scoring from 1B on a hit-and-run?

Who knows, but I'm going for Crawford anyway.

I chose to answer most dangerous as "who is most likely to score when on base". I voted for Reyes, albeit somewhat biased, but watching a lot of Mets games it seems like if he gets on base with no out it is practically a guaranteed run, and even with 1-2 outs I like his chances of scoring. Very exciting player, and part of the reason I'm frustrated that he doesn't get on base more...

I did some quick and dirty analysis of a players "likelihood to score" when getting on base: (R-HR) / (H-HR+BB+HBP). I know this is extremely crude and missing a lot of factors, but I thought it would be fun to look at.

Of the 6 players listed, here were their 2005 percentages

Reyes 43.4%
Pierre: 41.0%
Crawford: 40.8%
Podsednick: 40.6%
Ichiro: 39.5%
Roberts: 35.8%

From this (and my likely bias), I voted for Reyes as the most "dangerous" of the group.

Just for fun, I checked everyone in the league with at least 65 runs scored last year (I used this as a minimum since that was what Dave Robers had, the lowest on the list). Here are some selected results:

1. Bobby Crosby 47.9%
2. Damon 44.2%
3. Rollins 43.8%
4. Reyes 43.4%
5. figgins 43.4%
10. Pudge 41.3%
11. Pierre
13. Crawford
14. Podsednick
19. Ichiro
33. Roberts
126 (last) Burrell 20.2%

I'm not sure this really means too much, but thought it was interesting enough to post. I was surprised to see Pudge so high.

Beltran has an 87+% success rate which is about 2% higher than any other I've ever seen with significant steal numbers. He steals 30+ bases every year and almost never gets caught. Seems pretty dangerous to me.

Although he isn't included I say Willy Taveras. He has the best pure speed and uses it well by hitting many infield singles and often bunting if ONLY he was a lefty batter. He also creates runs by stealing bases although he might not steal as much as Crawford or Posednik. Overall I still say Taveras

Taveras isn't even in the same class as a Figgins or Crawford

Probably. It'd be like if a bank robber only robbed banks who forgot to turn their alarms on. Beltran is a great situational base stealer. When he picks his spots, he has enough speed, and gets great jumps to acquire a great SB%.

*Reyes

Well if you are terming "dangerous" as just whichever guy is the fastest, then Joey Gathright could probably win that.

But I define dangerous in terms of their effectiveness on the bases and nobody is a more effective baserunner than Beltran with his combo of high steal numbers and a high percentage.
