Amadee Wohlschlaeger was an illustrator for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch from 1932 until 1981 and sometimes illustrator for The Sporting News. Here is some of his work.

Many of you may not be familiar with his name, but if you read The Sporting News in the 1960's you will be quite familiar with his work.

I have the Sporting News Book "Take Me Out to the Ballpark" printed in 1983 (it is not the same book by Josh Leventhal) and it has his drawings of evey major leage baseball stadium at that time. By the way, only 8 of 28 parks (excluding Ebbets, Polo Grounds, Forbes, Shibe, Griffith, Crosley, Sportsman, Boston Braves and League Park) in that book are being used today. It goes to show how many new ballparks or stadiums have been built since the late 80's.

I wish they would do an revised version of that book!

1958 Sporting News Executive of the Year, St. Louis Cardinal general manager Frank Lane.

Lane played a little minor league ball and was a minor league executive and president of the American Association, but gained fame as general manager of the White Sox, Cardinals, and Indians. He traded stars like Red Schoendienst, Rocky Colavito, and Roger Maris with abandon. Cardinal owner Gussie Busch blocked Lane's attempted trade of Stan Musial. Lane became business manager of the Athletics in 1961 and later scouted for the Orioles and Brewers. baseballlibrary.com

I remember Amadee's drawings from when I was a kid. I can't say that I ever thought of them as caricatures, though. I've always liked his work.

I didn't think they were caricatures either but that's what I've seen them refered to more often than not, so I went with it.

It's on-going. Once I get them from The Sporting News I have to isolate them and then clean them up. They don't look like the do here when I start with them.

That means going in to PSP and cleaning them up pixel by pixel sometimes.
