Well, here begins the series against the Angels. Coming off our split with the M's....let's go O's!!

Chelle
05-26-2006, 08:13 PM
Well, it looks like people have taken this Friday night of memorial day weekend to go out and not watch the game....which is (considering Chen is bucking for a 20 loss season) understandable.

Anyway, I'll hold down the fort.

J W
05-27-2006, 01:40 PM
It looks like the new thread didn't help the O's any as they kick off the weekend with a 5-2 loss and an inside-the-park home run given up to noted O's snubber Vlad Guerrero.

The Orioles have lost 14 of their last 18 road games.

So, how many home cames are coming up soon? :laugh

I hope Jay Gibbons is Ok. He hurt his shoulder, back and hip when he hit the wall. He's supposed to leave the team Sunday to be with his family after his mother's unfortunate passing. How come none of these west coast games are televised on local channels?

Mr. Boh
05-27-2006, 04:49 PM
If they were playing better I believe we'd see the television coverage. But with a sub 500 record, lousy pitching and inconsistent play, we won't see the coverage we saw a few years ago.

The MASN/Comcast war for one. And the first three were not broadcast anywhere...unknown why (local baltimore paper reports that they didn't think there would much intrest in baseball games that late at night, so no station picked them up). What erks me is when NO t.v. station picks up a game, why can't that be broadcast via mlb.com or mlb packages?

Anyway, to keep with the game thread, where are all the O's fan on this forum. Sadly, I spent my time "watching" the game on my computer. So I tried to get the thread going.

As for last nights game, Bruce Chen finally had a good outing...but just no run support ARGH. And, Todd Williams almost got poked by my voo doo doll pin.

Bedard! You were so good in May, what's going on?

Did anyone see that little blurb in ESPN magazine about Tejada should be a DH because his range is so bad?

JohnGelnarFan
05-28-2006, 10:32 AM
I didn't see that but it's nuts. Tejada is a very good shortstop with a great arm. He's also a team leader on the field which is Invaluable. Who do they suggest should replace him at ss? Easy to say but not so easy to do!

Bedard is starting to fit right In with the rest of the staff. Hopefully Lopez and Chen's recent outings were a sign of better days to come. It happens quite often when the weather gets warmer. How much longer is Cabrera supposed to be out?

Well I never thought I'd say this but is Leo Mazzone not working out with these pitchers? And if so, does that mean we need new pitchers that will work with Mazzone or does it mean we need to plead to Ray Miller again?

Ultimately Leo's right. It's the losing attitude that's the biggest problem with our club.

J W

Did anyone see that little blurb in ESPN magazine about Tejada should be a DH because his range is so bad?

No, and I won't bother. Range isn't the only thing and like JGFan says Tejada's arm makes up for his average mobility.

We had a superb defensive shortstop here for a long time who was a little on the big side and didn't have the best movement. He did it through his positioning, arm, and execution.

Chelle

You may be right, Leo was great with the "down and away" when he had Maddox and Glavine, etc. Maybe these guys just don't have the stuff, skill..whatever to make that work. Or, maybe this isn't just the right place for his style, I don't know...I'm not that much of an expert on pitching. I do know that while we were bad with Ray, we're horrible with Leo. Not that I'd want Miller back. Who knows...I do know that if our pitching is going to improve we need to make some major adjustments.

True, but I'm not even going to compare Tejeda to Ripken. True, Tejeda does have an arm...and while he's range is...not excellent, I'd like to see him make a few more dives. But MAN..his bat more than makes up for it.

JohnGelnarFan
05-28-2006, 05:44 PM
You're so right JW. If anyone should appreciate fundamental and intelligent shortstop play,It's the fans of Baltimore and I think they do. We learned and were fortunate enough to watch one of the best in Cal. Wer'e very lucky to have a player of Tejada's caliber manning the position today. Maybe some outsiders are critical but we know what wev'e got. I'm glad he's an Oriole!

2 HR Night for Corey Patterson....GO O's!!!!!!

JohnGelnarFan
05-31-2006, 10:49 AM
Corey Patterson has been a very nice pickup! Matos isn't improving and Markakis is learning on the job. He covers a lot of ground in center, which is necessary if Conine and Gibbons are on the corners. Hopefully he won't get homer happy. I think that was part of his problem in Chicago. He also might steal 40 bases!

J W
05-31-2006, 05:06 PM
Patterson is everything the team hoped for when they picked him up... and a great fit at Camden Yards where some of his fly balls turn into HRs.

Hard to believe--the team hit on all three major acquisitions (Patterson, Hernandez, Benson) and are still struggling overall. But it's a long season, and fortunately the team is coming home for a while.

JohnGelnarFan
06-01-2006, 05:11 PM
Last night's game was a nice comeback. You saw a good one OF1810. Bedard is pitching tonight and already allowed a 2 run homer to Johnny Gomes. He worries me. He has such a good arm but I wonder if he's 100% healthy. It may be location or a mechanical flaw but he seems to be getting bombed regularly now. Mazzone must be pulling his.....well,he must be very concerned.

Chelle
06-01-2006, 06:03 PM
Kazmir sure is a walking fiend.....

I hope this doesn't get rained out....Go O's!!!!!

So much for my arguement for big John :o ......tonight anyway. He'll get em' next time!

Chelle
06-01-2006, 09:36 PM
Well, it looks like Adam Loewen is going to start on Sat. This could be a great start for the kid or a total disaster. I hope it goes well for him.

I'd like to see us go into this series with the Yanks with strong starting pitching since our bullpen seems to be getting strong.

Not to mention, we seem to be hitting. HITTING!

Chelle
06-03-2006, 08:56 AM
Ok, Here comes Loewen's first major league start. This should be great (I hope) as he was doing really well in AA before Penn's Appendicities (sp??). Look for a few walks (wouldn't be an O otherwise) and hopefully is he stays true to form plenty of SOs.

Loewen v Johnson. I bet the kid is nervous as you can be.

JohnGelnarFan
06-03-2006, 02:14 PM
The O's website says the game is on MASN but it is also on locally on the WBN(WDCW?). The veteran Johnson vs. the rookie Loewen. This should be fun! :gt

JohnGelnarFan
06-03-2006, 02:29 PM
Not a good start. The singing of the National Anthem was ear shattering, soul piercing and made me wince in pain!

Chelle
06-03-2006, 06:23 PM
Ok...loss number two with the same score. Grrr...And Lopez is pitching tomorrow.

However, Loewen did pretty well (good sign for the future).

I wonder, could our infield drop anymore balls?

Also, I think Palmer is Jeter's number one fan. Maybe we could ask someone on the Yankee's forum to get an autograph for him.

Oriolesfan1810
06-05-2006, 05:35 PM
Anyone having Second Thoughs on Millar yet? He's got a homerun in 2 straight games. And the o's seem to be holding their own.

Toronto don't buy calls, they take 'em as is and leave it alone unless something looks really close.

I'm still wondering if Roberts is using them really sweet looking Red-Eye Contacts.

Fan base is kinda small tonight.. Probably 12,500-13,000

Chelle
06-05-2006, 07:07 PM
I'm not having second thoughts about him, but he's been upgraded from the Matos level of "waste of space" to Conine level of "what have you done lately" so...it's better. He still could stand a little defensive effort.

Crowed is pathetic...but there are no Blue Jay's visiting from Canada...

Can you say Oh my goodness Daniel....WOW!

I have a good feeling in my tummy about this one. :gt

JohnGelnarFan
06-12-2006, 06:45 PM
Kris looks like he's going to get his 7th win tonight. He's sharp and getting.....the ball too much over the plate! Rios just hit his second homer of the night :evil We need a few more runs to make sure.

Chelle
06-12-2006, 06:50 PM
I'd like to see two good solid insurance runs and Kris go into the 8th.

JohnGelnarFan
06-12-2006, 07:05 PM
He's got to be the one that the rest of the staff follows. He may not have the heat he used to but he is the ace of our rotation. He has to be the 15 game(or more) winner that Lopez was in the past.

Chelle
06-12-2006, 07:07 PM
If Benson wins 15 games I'll be so happy I'll do a little dance.

JohnGelnarFan
06-12-2006, 07:17 PM
Get that on tape ;) Hernandez hit that ball very hard and Patterson was safe! Millar is tired and not streaking like he did earlier tonight....

Chelle
06-12-2006, 07:17 PM
Corey was robbed!

I'm glad to see Sammy get out there and fight for him though.

At least the Dempster didn't have to Earl Weaver it.

That's funny! :laugh I wish I could have seen the look on Francona's face.
We have a day game today. Trailing 3-2 in the 8th but a few good things have happened. Matos is 2-3 with a triple,Conine is 2-4 with a triple and Millar stole a base today! Todd Williams came on to pitch the 7th and blew the Jays away.

Why was he back in the game today? I know sometimes I can be a bit critical of these guys...but he should not be allowed to play.

JohnGelnarFan
06-16-2006, 01:44 PM
Luis has had a .300 and .280 season and I really believe that they think he's an outstanding fielder. I think they're giving him every chance before making a decision on moving him. If he does anything at all,his value will go up.

JohnGelnarFan
06-17-2006, 07:32 PM
The Orioles beat the Mets again,4-2! Benson wins his 8th and Ray gets his 18th save! Benson is the player of the player of the game with a win and homer(his first major league) against his old team. :clapping :gt

J W

Awesome. Benson just continues to save the team from completely falling apart. Could a sweep actually happen in June?

Loewen gets another chance today and a good performance against the Yankees would go a long way towards him staying with the O's.

Chelle
06-20-2006, 03:52 PM
Loewen pitched great....but just couldn't get the win (I was away on travel and watching from the road).....let's see how the kid does on Sat vs the Nats.

JohnGelnarFan
06-20-2006, 05:58 PM
In the Q and A section of the O's website on MLB.com,It says to expect to see lots more of Matos playing. He has more tools than the kids playing out of position and they hope that he'll show more as time goes on. We'll see!
Cabrera is off to a slow start tonight but it's early.....

Chelle
06-20-2006, 05:59 PM
I would have liked to see less HRs.....LOL

And, Palmer needs to stop calling Conine Mr. Marlin. Unless, they plan on taking him back.

Chelle
06-20-2006, 06:00 PM
ARGH!

Just as I say that!

JohnGelnarFan
06-20-2006, 06:06 PM
That guy Uggla has some nice stats! Who's Treanor??
Mr. Marlin only needs 14 RBI's for 1,000 in his career!

Chelle
06-20-2006, 07:00 PM
That will take the rest of the year.

JohnGelnarFan
06-20-2006, 07:04 PM
But it will give him a whopping 32 for his final year! Is Mora out of the game Chelle?

Chelle
06-20-2006, 07:09 PM
Yeah, Willis laser beemed him on the knee.....I mean...Mora didn't move for like 5 mintues. They carried him off the field.

Palmer said "possible fracture" and "won't see him again for awhile" and things that had me shivering in my seat.

Not good. Very not good.

JohnGelnarFan
06-20-2006, 07:12 PM
I didn't see it but I'm sure it will be on the game highlights. We can't afford an Injury like this. The O's have to make a trade for a decent hitter if he's going to be out for an extended period of time. Is it Tony Batista time? He was just released by Minnesota.

Chelle
06-21-2006, 05:54 AM
I thought you said "decent hitter"....what's this Tony Batista talk....

Remember...Tony thinks everything is a HR ball. The only reason I'll take Tony if it gets Matos off our roster (lesser of two evils).

Maybe Delmon Young is free....he maybe angry...but the guy can hit.:laugh

JohnGelnarFan
06-21-2006, 04:47 PM
I heard that Young's 50 game suspension is over already  Melvin Mora's X-Rays were negative so hopefully he won't miss much time. Batista was hoping that there was a fracture! Matos got a single last night and appears to be coming around.

Chelle
06-22-2006, 11:00 AM
I was hoping that in the brawl last night some of the O's players would "accidently" hit Matos. :p

JohnGelnarFan
06-22-2006, 03:36 PM
Matos current streak has raised his average to .202 Keep your eye on him!
Hernandez average is down to .277. You can see how his lack of production has affected the offense and team record. :ughh........and the crummy pitching outside of Bedard's great game last night.

Chelle
06-23-2006, 07:29 AM
Matos! Above the Medoza Line!

Although Ramon's slump buster 2 HRs last night is hopefully a sign of things to come.

JohnGelnarFan
06-23-2006, 11:08 AM
Hernandez needed a game like that badly. He had been hitless in his previous 23 at bats. Even so,he has 50 RBI's. Hopefully,he's refound his stroke.

JohnGelnarFan
06-30-2006, 03:51 PM
The O's travel to Atlanta to start their road trip. it's been a long time since Wev'e had a better record than the Braves at this point in the season. The Braves are 4-21 in June. It will be a homecoming,of sorts, for Mazzone,Lopez and Ortiz. Hopefully,Cabrera will be sharper than his previous 2 starts. Conine and Hernandez are hitting but we'll need production from more than 3 or 4 to win this series. Russ Ortiz gets his first Orioles start Saturday, facing Tim Hudson. It should be a good series!

Russ Ortiz pitches his first game as an Oriole tonight. Let's hope that this is one of those miracle aquisitions that people talk about for years. What a great bargain it would be if he could regain the form he had just a few years ago. I'm not counting on it but it has happened before.

Like with my personal favorite player, Tim Wakefield. I'm liking his 0.00 ERA. Let's hope it stays like that!

JohnGelnarFan
07-01-2006, 02:06 PM
That's a perfect example MSM :clapping Although he throws a knuckleball,I'm sure he had to make adjustments to become such a successful pitcher. I hope Ortiz has the mentality of a Wakefield or Frank Tanana.

P.S.- Do they still eat maple beans in your part of the country? My family is from a town in Vermont that used to make them all the time. There also used to be a maple syrup factory there and the workers would give us maple candy in the shape of maple leaves. I loved them!

JohnGelnarFan
07-02-2006, 12:06 PM
Well, the Russ Ortiz era didn't start off very well but the team won. 4.1 Innings,9 hits,3 ER,4 BB and 1 K. He's had a long layoff between appearances and may have tired quickly. He also has a lot to prove in order to stay in the majors. He may have felt the pressure. We'll have to wait until he's had a few regular turns in the rotation to see what he really has left in the tank. Hopefully,he can show some of what made him a very successful pitcher in the past. He's a bargain at a pro-rated minimum salary. If he doesn't work out,Penn may be ready to come back or we can call Jeff Weaver's agent. Jose Canseco will be pitching for the San Diego Surf Dogs and if his knuckler is jumping,maybe.........

JohnGelnarFan

Exactly. The hometown official scorer keeping Manny's hitting streak alive. I really "ain't fond" of Manny Ramirez. Why doesn't he just wear a Mumu out there? I hate today's uniforms and his is ridiculous.

JohnGelnarFan
08-11-2006, 06:58 PM
Well,Adam didn't have it tonight and Rodrigo is pitching like.....Rodrigo Lopez. 8-0 in the 6th. I can handle a loss but David Wells still has a shutout going? That can't happen. Maybe Russ will come in for his usual whipping. He needs to show something, even in a mop-up role. Javy is 1-3 with a run scored and an RBI.

Russ Ortiz pitched 2 scoreless innings again today and is starting to look like his former self. 2 games don't say enough but his pitches have alot more zip and his ERA is down to 9.20! :)
On the other hand,Todd Williams has to go....tonight! He Is Horrible! He faced 5 batters and got 1 out. He came in behind 7-6,allowed a 3 run homer and made the funniest looking error on a weak ground ball that I've seen in ages. PLEASE get rid of him and bring back Manon or Abreau.

I'd love to have him back(real cheap)Honus! Can you believe he was our ace a few years ago? He hasn't pitched very well but I always liked his arm. Until our young guys are ready,we need better than Rodrigo Lopez,Bruce Chen and Todd "Bleepin"Williams!

I'll leave Russ Ortiz out for now because he's pitched 3 scoreless Innings!

You left Russ Ortiz out? 3 scoreless innings does not make Donut man ok in my book. He needs to eat his way out of a more innings :)

Nick Markakis is starting to really bust out. 3 HR in a game, in a win vs. the Twinkies! They're starting talks of Markakis winning RoY.

Way to go Nick! :gt

i'm a sox fax, so i might be off base, but during the sox/o's series, perlozzo PH fahey for markakis vs papelbon...fahey struck out...i didn't understand it at that time, but liked the outcome

i live in dc, so i get o's games and have been impressed w/markakis, though there will be rumors that raffi must have stopped by

who would ever have predicted a 3hr for nick?

Markakis, you know, did really well, you know, last night, you know, you know, he hit, you know, three home runs, you know, but, you know, what really, you know, was, you know, funny, you know, was his, you know, postgame, you know, interview, you know.

Remember Markakis is a kid...he's like 22 or something (and shy).
