Of all the players in the Modern Era who got at least one hit in their careers only Mutt Williams and Herb Kelly did this??

I think there are a lot more out there. I opened the total baseball encyclopedia to a random page and found Neil Fiala - 5 gms with Stl and Cin - 1 hit.

What he means is that only Williams and Kelly accomplished a certain feat.

I am looking at the set of all players in the Modern Era who got AT LEAST one hit. From that group the players mentioned did something that is unique to them and them alone.

I looked up the two in the Baseball almanac and couldn't find much. but here is a thought.
They were both pitchers who only won one game. Could it have something to do with a hit in that one win?

Each of them also had one season where their adjusted Range factor was in the stratosphere. I'd suspect that there are a lot of pitchers who managed that in limited play during an era when there weren't many strikeouts.

They are also World War I era players - is there any connection? Both survived the war - possibly also to fight in World War II?

Hank Gowdy fought in both World Wars.

Gazillions of pitcher won exactly one game and a bunch of them got a hit in that victory. Nothing to do with wars. Their uniqueness can be seen on their career baseball statistics. The fact they are both pitchers is coincidental. The two players who did this in the 19th Century were position players.

Two 19th century players (Bob Mathews and Welday Walker) have also done this.
