I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the correct area, but I thought I'd take the chance. I've been told by family members that my grandfather played baseball for the Southern Association on a Memphis team...I'm assuming the Memphis Chicks (and I honestly don't know if this is true). I'm wondering if there is source that contains lists of players from the 1920's?

Marshall Wright's Southern Association book is your best bet as it lists rosters for each team. There are a couple Spalding Guides available free online from this era that you could check. Additionally, Pat Doyle's player database goes back to 1922 or 1923 know.

I have a copy of Marshall Wright's Southern Association book.
If you will give me your grandfather's name I will be glad to look
and see what can be found.

D.A. McNeill was his name. I do know he was living in Memphis between 1920 and 1925.....

mac30:
I could not find a D.A. McNeill listed in the book. The closest
was a Harry McNeal, 1908 Birmingham pitcher, and McNelly
(no first name given) a Mobile pitcher in 1926.
Sorry.

That's okay. Thanks for looking it up! Could there have been anyone else he played for while living in Memphis? Was there another minor leagues association? I apologize for all of the questions, but I'm actually a history researcher (and sometimes genealogist) and know virtually nothing about baseball....so all of this is pretty educational for me.

I also have a book by Marshall Wright on the International League.
It was AAA while the Southern Association was AA. I will have to
find and then I'll check to see if his name is there.
The IL was primarily teams in the eastern US plus Toronto and
Montreal.
