View Full Version : Is Todd Coffey the new closer?

After today's nice comeback win (but not too nice, avoiding a sweep by the Pirates is nothing to write home about) Narron put Weathers in for innings 7 and 8, and Coffey closed it up in the 9th. He dodged a bullet, giving up a lead-off double, but if he's going to be 'the guy' for a while, I mark it as an improvement.

Ok, so with a couple days of hindsight on my side, I'll answer my own question. No. Should he be the closer? Weathers posted his fourth blown save the other day. That's 4 in a month and a half. Do the math.

First off, Weathers is not the closer, he just happens to be the guy who records saves for the Reds (not of recent). Second, Weathers has his 3rd blown save in a row so Coffey should take over as the guy who records saves.

An excellent choice of phrasing, in my opinion.

Weathers should be used as a middle reliever(like Narron is using Coffey) and i'd then move Coffey to closer. He's our most consistent reliever and has the stuff to get it done in the 9th inning...
