Yes, you read it correctly: 1987. The last Tiger team to sniff the playoffs.

A comparison of the current Tigers to this 1987 vintage batch within the current team schedule was requested of me, but I thought it be only fair for these guys to stand alone for their achievements, so I made a replica thread instead. It should still be fairly useful for comparing current teams to certain previous historic teams. I may get bored again and do a few other years (maybe the championship seasons?) somewhere down the road. Enjoy!

After all of these years i still remmber listening to that last game of the season with toronto on armed forces radio over in europe.i was in the army reserve and my company went over seas for 3 weeks that year.i would never image that this year would be the last time that the tigers would make the playoffs at tiger stadium.i am still confident that during playoff time this year comerica park will be dark as it should be.

I remember the last game of the season as well. My brother and I lined up in the wee hours for bleacher tickets. Passed the time bonding with everybody and making coffee runs to the White Castle just across the parking lots. Tanana couldn't have been much better that day. I remember all the cops on horses lining the field as we went to the lower deck and debated whether the bragging rights for jumping over the fence would be worth getting arrested. We stayed in the stands. Over-exertion and lack of sleep made the day kind of fuzzy and dreamy for me, but I guess it was like that for a lot of Tiger fans, in one way or another.
Pologrounds, in all honesty, how long will your boycott of the Tigers continue? Is it all about the stadium? Current ownership? Lingering embarrassment from 2003? This is a great time to be a Tiger fan. After the last 15 years, god knows we've earned the right to be a little giddy about a hot start.

We've tried, but Doanld sticks his ground. He dislikes current management, Comerica, and the way the city of Detroit is being run. When those three things change from the status quo, maybe we'll get him back. We wouldn't expect any less.

At least he was on-topic with this post, the first of it's kind in eons. Thanks, Donald! That's all I ask, be on-topic. Great job, and nice post too.

As for CoPa being dark during the playoffs in '06, that's easily possible, and most likely. Hot starts are one thing, but hot seasons are something entirely different. For those of us who stuck with the team through everything (inept management is a true claim), this is a nice change and a time to be excited. Most of us don't even care whether we make the playoffs or not, it's just nice to see a decent ballclub with an Old English 'D' on their chests playing some pretty amazing baseball. While I respect your right to be absolutely in love with Tiger Stadium and absolutly loath Comerica Park, I hope you're still secretly keeping an eye on the Tigers from a distance (although I'm sure you'd deny it even if you did).

The last game was certainly encouraging. And June is not too far down the line. All signs point to a good season for this team, playoffs or not.

Spot on, as they (don't) say where I come from. It's just nice to be earning some respect. I was just reading a post about interleague play, and one of the Cardinal fans was bemoaning the fact they have to face us this year. When was the last time that happened? Of course, I'm not anticipating a series with them either, but hey...

What I remember is the big Sparky Anderson implosion the last three weeks of the season. He lost confdence with several of his players at some point in the season and didn't play them when soem of his favorites were worn out and slumping. Remember how some of the late season call-ups like RF Scott Lusader carried the team at the season's end, then ugged the pine during the playoffs? I remember how he mis-managed the bullpen, hooking pitchers on a whim, even when they were pitching well.

You sure that you are not mixing 1987 with 1988?

I guess it's safe to say that the 2006 Tigers have surpassed this 1987 squad, now that they've finally made it back to the playoffs AND World Series. Finally, a good team again.
