As a fan favorite and the mold for what being a St. Louis Cardinal is, Willie McGee exemplified that and much more. Willie's devotion to the St. Louis Cardinals, to the city of St. Louis, and to the millions of Cardinals fans around the country demands our voices to be heard.

With the chances of Willie McGee making it into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY is now slim at best. But as Cardinal fans we know what the name Willie McGee means to the St. Louis Cardinals. He devoted his career to the Cardinals, and to the fans. It is now time for all of us to return that devotion by letting the Cardinals Organization know, even though Willie McGee may never reside in Cooperstown, NY... St. Louis, MO is his true home and is a Hall of Famer in every Cardinals Fan's eyes. In the world of Major League Baseball, unless you saw Willie McGee play or were graced to have him on your team, the common fan may see only sucessful statistics, but short of Cooperstown, NY statistics. St. Louis Cardinals fans were lucky enough to see much, much more than mere numbers. His character on and off the field should be looked upon as a true role model for today's youth. His number, deservingly belongs atop with the other Cardinal greats from the past and remebered not only for the player but also the person and what a St. Louis Cardinal should be.

Willie McGee spent 17 years changing every Cardinals fan's life forever. I am only asking please, for everyone to spend ONE to TWO minutes to change his life forever. And when his number becomes retired, you will know that YOU helped make it happen for him.

Pass this link to friends family, and everyone, anyone is free to post this petition link onto their sites, we need the Cardinals organization to say "Wow, look at all the names." KEEP IT GOING!!! Thank you so much.

This has been a long time coming, and Willie McGee has been ignored long enough.

McGee was an excellent and exciting player for all those years with the Cardinals. However, having said that IMHO retiring players' numbers should be an even more rare honor than electing them to the Hall of Fame. McGee gave a lot to the organization, but he's simply not worthy of having his number retired, especially considering all the other Cardinal greats whose numbers have not been retired and are much more deserving ahead of him.

Until the Cardinals retire the names of Mize, Frisch, and Medwick, I will not petition for Willie McGee.

He was a great ballplayer, but he wasn't excellent like the players who get their numbers retired.

I agree... not quite good enough.

One of my all time favorite players ... one of them that made me a Cardinal fan, yet ... not sure if retiring the number is quite justified. I like some of his numbers, though.

.295 avg, 352 SB's, 2254 hits ... not too shabby.

i think it's justified. a two time batting champ, all star, gold glove winner, world championship, three pennant winners, led the league in rbi once-a very good career. plus, all the reasons for retiring boyer's number applies to willie.
the single most popular cardinal of the last 35 years. a win/win-you honor the man, the career, the teams of the eighties, and the fans (okay that makes it a win/win/win/win).

I concur that Willie, while a great Cardinal, is not in the retired number range.

All the retired #'s, with the exception of Ken Boyer and Auggie are in the HOF. Why, as stated above, there is no recognition for Medwick, Mize and Frisch is beyond me. I don't think Willie is any less deserving than Boyer, though.
