So with a little debate on other threads in this forum I am inspired. Throughout the day today I decided to mull over a formula. Here it is, with the 2 players in question to be the ones I will track with this...

As of 05-09-06
......................................C......H.... .RBI.....SF..........Score
Brandon Inge....................15......3.......2.......0. ............-7
Craig Monore....................15......4.......4....... 0.............-7

The formula is this, for each plate appearence a player has in the 7th inning or later with their team trailing or tied and said player represents the game tying run or better. They get a C (chance). For every RBI the player gets a point, including SF (if the sacrifice fly ties the game or takes the lead, otherwise sacrifice is worth 0). ie being up with the bases loaded down by 3 and 1 out, a sacrifice fly is not clutch.....down by 1 however guy on 3rd (a little more clutch). For every out the player makes they get -1 (including DP being a -2).

I think this explains all the things that might happen, but even if it doesn't I will make a ruling as I made up the formula.....weee kingdom of minutia, all to myself.

No clutch points tonight, which is a good thing....when your team wins. However, Brandon did his Monroe impersonation and front runned the lead to the out of reach position.

Haha, I thought about you when Inge nailed that unneeded three-run bomb, too. I knew it would be brought up here. Well, I shouldn't say unneeded, just not clutch. Neat thread, though. I look forward to the end results. I'm still betting that Monroe will be more clutch than Inge over the long haul, and not just because one of them signed an autograph and the other snubbed me.

Since there is not going to be many chances for my clutchometer, I thought I toss these #'s into play to keep the debate going. At least for long enough for Craig Monroe to become a Yankee.

You still want Monroe over Inge???

Yeah, it's early yet, I'd still take Monroe over Inge.

Top of the sixth, Monroe doubles in game-tying run. Right on cue...thanks, Craig.

Actually, it was the 7th another clutch point for Craig....Dang, this is going about as good for me, as the moment you started in on Nate Robertson. He started pitching lights out after you implored Leyland to bench him. :D oh well baseball is crazy sport.

Of course you know, whenever I endorse a player to be benched, it's when I want them to do good. Monroe came through tonight, so there isn't much you can say about that. Absolutely, there will be nights when Inge will come out ahead, but I'm stil positive that Monroe will come out on top when all is said and done.

Well, thats why I wanted to keep track. The funny thing is, I agree with you about needing a 3rd baseman. But my thinking is that would again free Inge up to be the UberUtility man he's meant to be. He could spot everyone from Carlos Guillen to Ivan Rodrigez to Jamie Walker (I bet Brandon could throw leftie and give up a double to a left handed hitter....thats what Jamie does..... lately)

I swear if I started this thing in the begining of the season, it might be different. But I am not going through the game recaps. I will just do it from watching. Oh well, go Craig prove me wrong...but not to wrong...so go Brandon too.

Why not thicken the plot? Tack on some points for simply getting on base as the tying or go-ahead run, but not with an error or fielder's choice. Might make for more active stat-play. Just a thought.

Sidenote: I think we may have the best pitching in the AL, White Sox not included. Reminds me of 1983, when the team was formidable, but not ready for prime-time. Similar team make-up, if you close your eyes and squint. Catcher a plus, 3B a ?, outfield with power, but no OBP, good starting pitching. This year's staff may actually pan out to be better, but who knows? Does Rogers have the stamina? Maybe. Does Verlander have the experience? No. The talent? Yes. Bonderman has it all, and gutsy Mike Maroth is a favorite of mine. Robertson has bad facial hair, but other redeemable qualities.:) I like these guys. The ghost of Aurelio Lopez smiles.

Ok I will take the bate...position by position comparison (current Tigers get current opinions from me, no reputation.)
C Ivan Rodrigez.......C Lance Parrish....advantage 1984
1B Chris Shelton......1B Darrel Evans...hmmm 1984 (although, lets see how this plays out?)
2B Placido Palonco...2B Lou Whitaker...advantage 1984
3B Brandon Inge......3B Tom Brokins....advantage..tie
SS Carlos Guillen.....SS Alan Trammell.advantage 1984
RF Magglio Ordonez..RF Kirk Gibson.....advantage 2006
CF Curtis GrandersonCF Chet Lemon.....advantage 1984
LF Craig Monroe.......LF Larry Herndon..advantage 1984

As to your thicken the plot point...you alread kind of get points, by not losing any. The points in the system are easy to lose and hard to make, so breaking even is a win. So reaching base as the 1st one up gives you a 0, if they wanted a point, why didn't they homer?

LOL! I'll be sure to tell them that the next time I'm down that way. Maybe they'll change their minds on striking out, and instead go for home runs. :laugh :gt

Please don't do that...I feel most of our hitters already SO enough going for Homers, without your encouragement?

I was trying to say getting a 0 is kind of like getting a point....thereby getting a single when you lead off the 7th in a tie game is worth more (0 is more then -1).The only way to get a point is to RBI, to take the lead or tie in most cases.. Ok, down by 4 bases loaded, 2 run single is worth +2....still. You get my point, though?

Tigers527, I was actually comparing this year's team to the '83 team, not '84. I made the comparison mainly because the '83 team was very good, but not really celebrated because they were completely overshadowed the next year. This year's team is doing well, but are they still a year or two away, as was the case in '83?

C Rodriguez.......C Parrish I'll take Lance for now, but we'll see
1B Shelton.........1B Cabell Shelton
2B Polanco........2B Whitaker Whitaker
SS Guillen..........SS Trammell Push
3B Inge............3B Brookens Inge
OF Monroe/Granderson/Ordonez.....Lemon/Herndon/Gibson/Wilson too early to tell.

If only I was tracking more fellows with this clutchometer thing...Tonight was really clutch for a few Tigers. How about Granderson? Unfortunately, no points for Monroe (he didn't get an RBI, per the score keeper <sorry racosun>)

I thought of you and this silly thing the other night when on TV they said that everyone of Inges 11 HR came in games decided by 3 runs or less....hmmm Oh well, this little meter is kind of fun to do....I wouldn't want to track more then 2 or 3 guys with it though.

What are you implying, that Inge is clutch? ;) I like your formula, too, but we are arguing about whether Inge is more clutch than Monroe. They are pretty close to being the worst two current players on the roster. It's still fun to wonder, though, at least for me. Probably for you too, I suppose, since you started this thread.

Yeah, that's true, it is fun for me. I did some thinking about both these fellows though. I say keep them, unless you can get someone in the top 5 in their positions.

Inges power numbers look to be shaping up with the better 3rd basemen in the league and his D is coming along nicely. Besides the guys in the clubhouse think Inge is quite the funny fellow <shrugs> (for what thats worth).

Craig Monroe is being clutcher (is that a word?) then I recall him being (maybe, it is a close watching thing though). Craig still scares the dickens out of me in the field.....but he is coming through with the bat.

So unless the Tigers can get a "Big Time" player at either of those positions I say leave them be, and maybe find a solid leftie stick for the DH position. I would love to see it be Hafner....depending on the cost. In the meantime go Thames, and just LEAVE Young (the worst thing I heard at the ballpark Sunday, "Hey Dimitri you're choking worse then you girlfriend".) Actually, I laughed at that one as DY proceded to SO, I winced while I laughed though.

I guess given last nights preformance, Todd Jones must be a big fan of the Clutchometer too. I mean if it weren't for Todd, Craig and Brandon would have not got those 9th inning ABs with the meter running.

Yeah, thanks for getting our two best hitters some extra plate appearances, Todd.

Did you folks watch the game tonight? It almost seemed like the Tigers saw Jones warming up in the 8th inning and decided to score enough runs to get out of the save situation.....just makes you go hmmm.

I was hoping so bad that Maggs would smack that ball over the fence so we wouldn't have to worry (too much) about Todd Jones. Thanks, Maggs. Way to take matters into your own hands.

I'm surprised this thread wasn't either revived before now or kept current, because Craig Monroe has been the Tigers' clutchest hitter all season long without a doubt. No debate between Monroe vs Inge anymore, name another player that has been clutcher than Monroe? Big time jack for Craig tonight!

I forget the exact day I stopped tracking. I do remember it was an extra inning game against TB I think. The pair of them both recorded something like a -4/-5...I felt for my mental health, I should just up and stop, or I might have been found on the Belle Isle bridge.

Yeah though, I guess Monroe wins that battle.
As for trying to update this thing, I am not even sure were to begin, as the situation is pretty specific, when points are scored or not...
