He's very fortunate that he isn't losing the whole year. There is no place in baseball, or any sport for that matter, for this kind of behaviour.

His big brother Dmitri should really sit down with him and have a LLLOOONNNGGG talk with Delmon.

I read where he'll be back into things by around June 19th. That just doesnt seem very long. He's still got all of July and August to play and maybe even September if he gets brought up to the majors. To me a good penalty would be to keep him from playing for a season so he can sit back and realize what he's done. He'll probably enjoy that 50 days off. He's already got money being the first round pick.

I believe his suspension should have been for the remainder of the season. I believe that with Young being one of the "Top Prospects" he is receiving a little special treatment. Tampa Bay stands to lose without their Bonus Baby in the field, so it would be detrimental to bench their prized ball player for an entire season and lose the gate that his presence on the field may bring. His actions call for a much stiffer penalty then not playing for what maybe 7 or 8 weeks. Is his pocket a little lighter? I didn't hear if he was fined, is the suspension with pay? For what he did he should be done for the season.

Who's to say this guy wouldn't take a bat in the stands if someone gets his goat while he's in the on deck circle. To me, he's just another thug!

I also thought the suspension would have been for the balance of '06, based on Burleigh Grimes getting that for spitting a wad of moist chew in an umps face back in the forties (Michigan State League) but fifty games is indeed the longest penalty ever in the history of the IL. If you read League President Mobely's statement carefully, you'll notice there is also required 50 hours of community service, and yes, it will cost Mr. Young the younger more than a few coins. His contract was for $500,000 this season, likely the highest in all of the minor leagues, and the suspension will cost him in the neighborhood of $175,000; not chump change by my estimation. He also publicly apologized to his team, baseball, and particularly the umpire for his actions, and I both believed him and accept his apology. He knew he mucked it up big time the minute he let the bat fly, and one of the primary reasons he was not punished more severely was that intent to maim or injure could neither be proved nor reasonably inferred from the statements given by those present. If he wanted to dash the ump's brains in, he could have; most thought he twirled the bat in the ump's direction and it nailed him flush on the chest protector.

I think Randy Mobely also feels some responsibility for the really good minor league players' frustrations with the minor league umpire strike situation. He is on the negotiating committee and has repeatedly urged the two sides to get back to the table and bargain in good faith to prevent tensions from exploding again. Using hometown umps, without nearly the training nor professionalism is a recipe for disaster if they don't get the pros back soon.

If you look at the video you can clearly see that the bat was not just flipped back. It came back with considerable force.
We have to be very careful not to condone this kind of reaction under any and all circumstances.
Would it be all right for fans to assault, that's right assault, because that is just what Mr. Young did to the umpire, minor league players during a big league strike or lockout? Of course not!! That is barbaric, as is Mr. Young's behaviour.
This behaviour is out of line and just plain wrong under any and all circumstances.

The AP report from Durham today:

"Durham Bulls manager John Tamargo was suspended indefinitely by the International League on Tuesday for bumping an umpire during a game last weekend.....
IL president Randy Mobley said the length of Tamargo's suspension will be detemined after reviewing a video of the incident.....
"I'm certainly not happy that these incidents are piling up," Bulls executive vice president George Habel said. (But) I don't see any connection with the Delmon Young incident or the (replacement) umpires at this point." ~AP, edited for space

Huh, perhaps he is the only one that doesn't get the connection.:crazy

MLB didn't, it was the International League.

But only a court of law can make you partispate community service.

I hardly believe that is true.

Either he accepts the punishment given him, or he takes his toys and goes home. He probably doesn't actually HAVE to do it, but if he wants to remain in baseball he sure as hell will. Do you see a problem with that? Do you see a problem with chucking a bat at an umpire?

I hope he gets a lawyer to take International League Commisoner to court.Telling him making him do community service is unconsitutional and its unfair.

If I were him, I'd be happy with community service. If not, then levy a heavy fine against him. To me, that community service may not necessarily be within the rights of MiLB (I'm unsure of the rules on this), but it's certainly nothing to complain about.

Young should be dancing in the streets over this penalty. Virtually the absolute minimum suspension he was going to get. The 50 days community service is not unconstitutional by any stretch of the imagination. Nor is it illegal. I suppose that it might be against the collective bargaining agreement, but I'll leave that for the player's union to sort out.

Have you read the constitution? What you said was one of the most moronic things anyone could ever hope to read.

:laugh :laugh :laugh

I've chucked some stuff at umps in my day, but never a bat.

BTW, why does Young get 50 for throwing his bat, but Bernie Williams gets next to nothing for throwing his helmet?
