With a little over a month into the season, Washburn is the M's MVP and hard luck guy. All of his seven (7) starts have been quality, with the exception of April 11th @ CLEVE in which he went five (5) innings and gave up six (6) runs on nine (9) hits. He gave up one (1) in the 3rd, two (2) in the 4th, and three (3) in the 5th that day. He still went five (5) innings and kept it fairly close until CLEVE added three more runs late off of Harris.

Washburn has only eight (8) walks in his seven (7) starts in (47) innings with his (2-5) record.

Washburn's six quality starts:

April 5th: 7 innings 2 runs W
April 16th 6 innings 3 runs L
April 21th 8.2 innings 2 runs L M's score one run
April 26th 6.2 innings 1 run W

May 2nd 7 innings 4 runs L M's score one run
May 7th 7 innings 2 runs L M's can't score off Sabathia

This last one is a heartbreaker. Sabathia, in his second start of the season, throws 105 pitches in eight innings. I didn't see the game, but you would have hoped that the M's would take some pitches against a guy, who's only had one start previous this season. Sure, Sabathia's a big strong guy, but eight innings is a hugh effort.

Now, this is not a doomsday forecast, for the M's who are only five games back, in a tough divison, where not one team has yet to step forward and say we are the best in the West. Texas is always tough on the M's and the A's and Angels figure to be there at the end. I figure the A's to explode with Bradley and Thomas there. Also, the M's have played some tough teams so far. We will have to win some series against the KC's and the TB's, to stay in it. To make the playoffs the M's will have to win the divison, which is no easy task. The wildcard figures to come from the East, where the bombers and the red sox's are playing (.600) ball. Hopefully the pen will settle down and the hitting will pick up. It's much easier to pitch with some steady run support. Everyday Eddie has cost us a couple of games. The M's could easily have three or four more wins this year. You can't get them back though. The M's are young up the Middle. It's going to be fun watching these guys develop into a competitive team.

Washburn's line: 6 innings, 5 hits, 2 runs, in another quality start, with a no decision, as the M's beat the Padres.

& Memorial Day, May 29th, Washburn went 7 innings and gave up 2 runs against the Rangers. His record now 3-6. M's make another lefty look like Randy Johnson.

Hard luck Washburn tossed another quality start Saturday against the Tigers of Detroit. One earned run in six innings for the M's. June 15, 21, 27 he had some rough starts but not bad. One of them he gave up six runs and four and five the other two. The past two starts have been great. Is he the Ryan Franklin of the '06 Mariners ? Nobody gives more than Washburn. He continually gives 115% percent and much of the time he gives 150% percent. His shortest outing of the season, he went 4 1/3 but other than that he goes 6 or 7 innings every time. His log:

4/5 7 innings 2 ER W
4/11 5 " 6 L
4/16 6 " 2 L
4/21 8.2 " 2 L
4/26 6.2 " 1 W

5/2 7 " 4 L
5/7 7 " 2 L
5/13 5.2 " 4 W
5/19 6 " 2 W
5/24 5.2 " 4 W
5/29 7 " 2 L

6/4 4.1 " 7 L
6/9 6 " 1 W
6/15 5 " 6 L
6/21 6 " 5 W
6/27 6 " 4 W

7/2 7 " 2 L
7/8 6 " 1 L

The Mariners have lacked offense in the past 2 series. The pitching has been there, the bullpen has been a little shakey, but our offense certainly has not. Happend to Jamey and Washburn in this series.

Washburn, who has had the bad luck bug this year, won against CLEVE last night 3-1. It looked as though it might go South late in this one, but solid relief work by the Mariners Pen secured the lead and the game. The M's have a chance to win another series today, as Piniero goes against Lee.
