With a little over a month into the season, Washburn is the M's MVP and hard luck guy. All of his seven (7) starts have been quality, with the exception of April 11th @ CLEVE in which he went five (5) innings and gave up six (6) runs on nine (9) hits. He gave up one (1) in the 3rd, two (2) in the 4th, and three (3) in the 5th that day. He still went five (5) innings and kept it fairly close until CLEVE added three more runs late off of Harris.
Washburn has only eight (8) walks in his seven (7) starts in (47) innings with his (2-5) record.
Washburn's six quality starts:
April 5th: 7 innings 2 runs W
April 16th 6 innings 3 runs L
April 21th 8.2 innings 2 runs L M's score one run
April 26th 6.2 innings 1 run W
May 2nd 7 innings 4 runs L M's score one run
May 7th 7 innings 2 runs L M's can't score off Sabathia
This last one is a heartbreaker. Sabathia, in his second start of the season, throws 105 pitches in eight innings. I didn't see the game, but you would have hoped that the M's would take some pitches against a guy, who's only had one start previous this season. Sure, Sabathia's a big strong guy, but eight innings is a hugh effort.
Now, this is not a doomsday forecast, for the M's who are only five games back, in a tough divison, where not one team has yet to step forward and say we are the best in the West. Texas is always tough on the M's and the A's and Angels figure to be there at the end. I figure the A's to explode with Bradley and Thomas there. Also, the M's have played some tough teams so far. We will have to win some series against the KC's and the TB's, to stay in it. To make the playoffs the M's will have to win the divison, which is no easy task. The wildcard figures to come from the East, where the bombers and the red sox's are playing (.600) ball. Hopefully the pen will settle down and the hitting will pick up. It's much easier to pitch with some steady run support. Everyday Eddie has cost us a couple of games. The M's could easily have three or four more wins this year. You can't get them back though. The M's are young up the Middle. It's going to be fun watching these guys develop into a competitive team.
