Matt Lawton has asked to be released or traded:

can't blame the guy. I'd want out too if I was sitting behind a stiff like Darren Bragg, err, Jeremy Reed. That's just humiliating.

--I don't think teams were lining up to sign him in the offseason. He is lucky to have and job and should just shut up and wait for his chance. He has been getting some playing time lately anyway.

Lawton isn't bellyaching or throwing a fit. He just asked if he could be realized if he didn't figure in the Mariners plans anymore than they are using him. Seems reasonable to me. The hassle, of course, is that the Union would never agree to setting aside his contract, so the Mariners will have to pay him anyway.

--Backup outfielder was the job he was signed for. There wasn't a regular spot available when he signed the deal, so he shouldn't have expect anything but what he is getting.

Lawton has been a starter his whole career. Sure the baggie and the turf helped his game in MINN, but I think he has some left. I can't really knock a guy who wants to play. He was a gentlemen about the whole thing. He knew someone had to go to make room and he just offered himself up.

Reed has had his shot. He hit well the last part of '04, but '05 and the start of '06 he stunk. Once through the league he did well. There are no secrets in the bigs. Word gets around quick. Perhaps a fresh start somewhere else will do him good. We are still in this thing. It is no time for a fire sell. Maybe a outfielder for outfielder trade will work. Two disgruntled (is that a word ?) players from different organizations in a straight swap. His options may be limited.
