Saturday was Willie Mays' 75th birthday. How that's possible, I'm not sure.

A little toast to the Say Hey Kid from Faith and Fear in Flushing:

On March 1, 1954, I was throwing batting practice for the Fort Eustis Sentinels. Willie had just gotten discharged that morning, and he came down to say good-bye to the team. Someone asked him to step in and take a few cuts. He did and I threw him about ten pitches, most of which he clobbered. Thus, I take credit for putting him in the mood for his greatest season.

So you're the guy I have to thank for that great season. Well hats off to you too Musial 6 and thanx for some great memories. Was '54 one of those seasons that the Cards changed to the uniforms without the birds perched on a bat?

I'm glad Willie made it to 75. For years, I had my doubts. Every time I heard Joe DiMaggio introduced (as a condition of his showing up at an event) as the "Greatest Living Ballplayer", I always had the same thought: "How on earth did I miss Willie Mays dying?"
