View Full Version : Best Team Nickname Polls?
The Dude

I was thinking about having a series of polls to elect the best team nicknames.
IE.
'27 Yankees-Murderers Row
'50 Phillies-Whiz Kids
'69 Mets-Miracle Mets
'82 Brewers-Harveys Wallbangers
'59 White Sox-Go-Go Sox
Just to get the idea out there. Thought we might have a little fun in the history forum. If you'd like to do this, just reply here with a suggestion for another good team name from MLB history, and I'll add it to the first poll if we have enough responses.

'34 Cards "Gashouse Gang"
Weren't the A's known as something from 72-74? "The swingin' A's"?
Miracle Braves of 1914
The Bronx Bombers
"Juicers aplenty" A's of '89 ;)
Lovable Losers (Cubs)
However, I think the Brooklyn Dodgers had the best - just, Dem Bums

I could be wrong, but was Bronx Zoo not a reference to Yankee Stadium and it's fans?

...or "the Mustache Gang (http://baseballguru.com/markusen/oakintro.html)," but Swingin' A's caught on better.
The Big Red Machine played those guys, and they've had a couple of derivative nicknames since then. A couple of years ago they won a lot of their away games while not faring so well at home, and were known as the "Big Road Machine;" and somewhere in the late 70s-early 80s they played like little leaguers and were called the Little Red Wagon. :laugh
(Thankfully, nobody thought to pin one on my 2003 Tigers! Or maybe people thought that they had enough trouble.) ;)
Another derivative nickname was the 1983 Phillies...due to their advanced age, they were AKA the "Wheeze Kids."

I'm pretty sure it was a reference to that team's clubhouse. Like those "Swingin' A's," they couldn't seem to go a day without a fight, but were champions when they went between the white lines.
How about those "Impossible Dream" Red Sox of '67?
The Hitless Wonders - 1906 White Sox

A coincidence that Reggie was a member of both? :)

Late 80's A's were the "Bash Brothers", a couple of years ago the Redsox had the "idiots" (no comment), and not really worthwhile to the discussion but I've heard the '92 brewers being referred to (only a couple of times as a joke on broadcasts) as "Garners pea-shooters". :laugh
Oh and the Rockies had the "Blake Street Bombers".

It was probably carried over to the 69' Mets but as already noted above,The World Champs were called The Miracle Mets. Casey Stengel originally named them The Amazin' Mets in 1962. He was the best PR man the original team could have had.

There was nothing miraculous about the 62' Mets at 40-120! :) The 1969 Miracle Mets were 100-1 odds to win the National league pennant after finishing 24 games out of first in 1968.They had never finished better than 9th(out of 10 teams before division play was started in 69). I'm reading a book right now called, " A Magic Summer-the 69' Mets" by Stanley Cohen. It follows their incredible overtaking of the Cubs and World Series victory over the Much more talented Orioles. The Mets only had two players that had 400 at bats that year!
I think '62 was The Miracle Mets.

The 1969 Mets were a miracle so great, that in the movie "Oh, God!", God played by George Burns says that miracles are rare, and when Bob Denver asked, what was your latest miracle? he responded "The 1969 Mets".
