Hello Baseball Fans...:hp
I need to know the date of this game! I have a newspaper article/picture and no clue when it was published.

Here is a quote from a picture in the Miami Herald:

Catcher Mike Tresh of the Chicago White Sox finishes a swipe as he tags out Outfielder Ed Carnett of the Cleveland Indians at home plate in the fourth inning at Comiskey Park, Chicago, yesterday. Umpire Charley Berry watches. The Indians socked the Sox, 7-1.

Incidentally another article next to the picture also talks about the St. Louis Browns defeating the Washington Senators 7 to 1 in the first of a four-game series. Players mentioned in this article include Nelson Potter, Johnny Niggeling, George Case, Rick Ferrell, Joe Venture, and Boris "Babe" Martin.

I'm actually a genealogy researcher who is trying to determine the date this article was published, but having the date of these games is just as good. Even a point in the right direction as far as researching the date myself would be appreciated.

Thanks much!
Jessica

www.retrosheet.org will provide you with early boxes of all games, as well as schedules - I think from back ten.

What I'd do is checkthe players out there, and since you have a box score, you can look up their teams and find out when these clubs played together. Umpires are even included as to when each served.

www.baseball-reference.com is also good, gives scores of games on certain days as well as player stats, but I think retrosheet is mroe in depth int he area you'd want.

The date was May 8, 1945

I am 100% positive on this one. I found the box score for the Senators/Browns game with the exact same score on the same date.

I hope this helps you. ;)

How's that for a push in the right direction? :laugh

Seriously though, good luck with your project. :)

I think the newspaper was saved because May 8, 1945 was V-E day!

Good call, but I just used my SABR membership.

Any fan of baseball history should have one.

Without question.

The Paper of record is great as well and the The Sporting News is included with that.

I'll have them till the day I die.

Awesome!

I knew you guys would come through for me :clapping

Yes, that is the correct Browns vs. Senators article, that I do have on this clipping also.

Ok well actually, on the other side of the baseball clipping is an article about my grandmother. I knew there was no way I could research that article (it's about a dress shop she opened in Miami), and I got to thinking the jokes us women make about men...you know...who played first base in 1957 for this team on this game....someone always knows the answer! So I figured going the baseball route would be more lucrative. And it was.

Thanks a ton! I really appreciate it :D It helps narrow down the timeframe my grandmother was married.

Glad I could help.

It took me about ten minutes to figure it out. I knew by the names you gave that it had to be mid-forties so I had a good head start.
