That is a good idea for a book but not an original one. In 1997 came "Baseball By The Numbers" written by Mark Stang and L. Harkness. This excellent book is a reference of all uniform numbers ever worn by all major league players (as well as managers and coaches) and teams since the first number was ever put on a uniform. This great book is also still easy to find for purchase on-line.
Of course, as far as player uniform numbers, the excellent web site Baseball-Almanac in its team roster sections lists all uniform numbers by every player to ever have a number onhis uniform. That information is, of course, free to look up by anyone. It comes in real handy for anyone who creates "old-time" rosters for such computer games as High Heat and MVP Baseball or OOTP.
