I just wanted to get your evaluations on the careers of a few recently retired, or soon-to-be-retired players who, I think we'd all agree, have no shot at the Hall.
BJ Surhoff
Benito Santiago
Ruben Sierra
Raul Mondesi
Marquis Grissom
John Olerud
It seems likely that all of these players will be one and done on the ballot when their time comes.

If you don't consider the OBP difference, they're fairly similar. On a seperate note, Olerud just cracked my top 30 1Bmen after I did notice that fact!

While Olerud is probably the best player on that list, I would not be shocked if he doesn't make it beyond the first ballot, which is the first post predicted.
All were decent players at the very least. Olerud and his batting title (titles?) look the best to voters, but it is nowhere near enough for a long ballot stay.

If I was Olerud I would hate to be lumped with the rest of those guys.

Olerud could have an okay HOF case I guess, but not one I'd agree with. Of the other guys, they were very good players who had a career they could be proud of, but not HOF players. Marquis Grissom was one of the best defensive outfielders of all time. Grissom averaged 4.70 DWS/1000 innings, which trails only Curt Flood and Tris Speaker among OFers with 1400+ defensive innings. WS shows him deserving of 6 Gold Gloves, and having one of the best defensive seasons ever in 1993.

--Olerud might have a Hall of fame case if he'd played at another point in history. His lack of power is pretty glaring for a 1B in this HR happy era. He also is pretty far down the list of 1B's from his own generation. Frank Thomas, Jeff Bagwell, Mark McGwire, Fred McGriff and Raffy Palmerio were pretty clearly better. Slightly younger Jim Thome and Carlos Delagado probably also (or will anyway) rank ahead of him. Mark Grace and Andres Gallaraga also have their fans who might rank them ahead of Olerud. Once you start drifting down toward being the 10th best firstbaseman of your own generation, the odds are pretty well stacked against you.

--I agree, but not everyone would (including, I expect, some actual voters). Still, I would rank him behind Thomas, Bagwell, McGwire, McGriff, Palmerio, Thome and probably Delgado amoung contempory 1B's. Actually I forgot Helton earlier and he looks to be building a strong case also. Olerud will be doing good to stick on the ballot a year or three. He doesn't have a shot at induction (although he is the best of the group mentioned to kick off this thread:) ).

Olerud was sort of close to a HOF path, but he was the kind of guy who needed 3,000 hits to get there. He started late, and he wasn't going to get there, even if some team put him out there at 1B every day.

Actually Santiago's been drifting around my to 25 C all-time,
Grissom's drifting around my top 30 CFs all-time
Olerud's drifting around my top 25 1B all-time.
Mondesi MIGHT make my top 50RFers ever, if I went that low.
I'm not sure Surhoff or Sierra would crack my top 100 for their positions.

I didn't think Mondesi & Sierra were that far apart but who knows

Surhoff actually isn't that bad. A .282 lifetime average could at least get him ON the ballot. As, of course, could being picked ahead of Barry Bonds and Rafael Palmeiro in the draft.

None of the guys here will make it to the HOF. A few of them could say that they wouldn't be the worst at their position in the HOF, but none of these guys are what people are looking for (or should be looking for) in a HOFer.
