Assuming Mike Piazza gets elected, can you name the only year since 1880 when there was no future HoF catcher playing in the majors??

Assuming Mike Piazza gets elected, can you name the only year since 1880 when there was no future HoF catcher playing in the majors?? Between Berra and Bench - 1966 there were no HOF catchers playing. Berra was a manager in 1964 and came back as a player briefly in 1965 with the Mets for 4 games so I guess 1964 would count as well.

Edited to add: Unless you count Bob Uecker.

That is correct.

Another reason why Bill Freehan deserves to be in the Hall of Fame...

Just wondering; yhy does it depend on whether or not Piazza gets elected? You forgetting about Ivan Rodriguez?

Pudge Fisk played until 1993 (25 games at C). Fisk covers the period back to 1972... and Pudge Rodriguez began his career with Texas in 1991. Piazza caught his first game in 1992.

Unless Jose Canseco's word is taken as sacred testimony, I can't see how Rodriguez misses the HOF. Unless every sportswriter only looks at defence and are good buddies with Roger Clemens, I can't see how Piazza misses it. So there are two viable candidates at C whose careers overlapped Fisk.

I am not forgetting Rodriguez at all. The question read "assuming Mike Piazza gets elected....". I needed a C to cover the period from Fisk until now. It didn't matter who did it as long as they did. Would you have felt better if I said Brad Ausmus or Javy Lopez??

I only needed one C to get elected. I wasn't listing all the C's who will get elected or any statement of their relative worthiness.

I figured you were probably looking for someone who has been a catcher since Fisk retired, but Rodriguez has been playing since 1991, 2 years before Fisk retired. In any case it's a minor detail. I just wanted to make sure you weren't implying that Pudge isn't HoF worthy.

fyi.... imho.... you can no longer refer to Ivan "pudge" Rodrigez as "pudge" any longer. Ever since the Jose steroid book came out "pudge" has been rather slim. I propose we now refer to I Rodrigez as Ivan "svelte" Rodrigez. :D

Actually, I would say that in a few years this question will no longer hold true. Joe Torre will eventually be in the Hall of Fame and he caught for the Braves in '66.
