When I was a kid we lived in Cambridge right across the river from Braves Field. I can remember going to sleep at night hearing the crowd and on a couple of nights when the wind was right you could hear the crack of the bat and then the roar of the crowd. I never went to a game at Braves Field but when I was old enough to be an altarboy they took the altarboys to an outing at Fenway (Ted Williams era).
Mr Perini was a summertime neighbor in Scituate. Every year Cardinal Cushing came to our little neighborhood church and spoke at every Mass asking for donations to a charity, an orphanage one year, a school for the disabled the next etc. I remember one year the Cardinal made a reappearance at the end of Mass. He thanked everyone for their generous donations and wanted to thank Mr. Perini especially for his most generous donation and closed, in his gravelly voice with "Lou Perini, may God bless you and God bless the Boston Braves" I learned later that Mr. Perini had dropped a check for $50,000 in the collection basket.
