View Full Version : Some Cubs Fans Show No Class

I believe the sports world needs to hear about what I recently
witnessed this past weekend.
I attended the Cardinals/Cubs game this past Saturday afternoon
(4.22.06) at the new Busch Stadium. I was standing on the sidewalk
after the game waiting for some friends, and three Cubs fans were
getting in a cab. I watched them try to pick a fight with any Cardinal
fans they saw. They yelled over to me and my buddies and proceeded to
tell us how big of a dump our new stadium is...(not crossing the line
so far). So one of my buddies sarcastically asked them how Derrek Lee
was doing… (not nice to pick on a guy with a broken wrist, but still
not crossing the line). Their reply to that was for them to
sarcastically chant "Da-rryl Kile…Da-rryl Kile" as they sped away in
their cab. Line crossed.
I have never witnessed such a distasteful display of fan heckling in
my 21 years of attending baseball games all over the country. Is this
how low Cubs fans are willing to go? Does punching below the belt help
them feel better about 97 years of losing? If that is the mentality
Cubs fans possess, then I don't think they deserve to win a World
Series EVER AGAIN. I don't even think the Red Sox/Yankees fan rivalry
would ever stoop that low to heckle opposing fans.
I am all for friendly smack talking between fans, but when you
sarcastically chant the name of one of our fallen heroes, who
tragically passed away before a game in Chicago less than 4 years ago
at the young age of 33, who was at the peak of his career, who left
behind a wife and three children, you have gone to far…WAY TO FAR. Way
to go Cubs fans. Way to show absolutely no class at all. I am
completely disgusted.
Sincerely,
An extremely pissed off Cardinals Fan

There are plenty of good Cubs fans. Especially here.
But that is flat out disgusting.

Very unfortunate, but in the world we live in, it may be possible to insert wayward "fans" from about any other team's rival. Some people are more about geography than teams and won't even bother to be helpful or kind to their fellow human being and baseball fan.
I've known quite a few very kind Cubs fans here, so I'm very happy to report that those individuals don't speak for the many Cubs--nor Cardinals--fans here.

Yeah, no denying that is pretty tasteless. I know you were angry/offended but I don't know if it is really responsible to extrapolate this incident and ascribe it to Cubs fans in general. I mean, is there something intrinsic to the Cubs that makes them more appealing to a$$holes looking to attach themselves to a baseball team. Your sentiment and point is taken, but the implication is highly questionable.

They were probably drunk. Most of the stupid Cubs fans usually are.

I don't blame you one bit for being angry, that was certainly beyond the pale. As a true Cub fan you have my sincerest apologies for the remarks of those miscreants disguised as Cub fans. I think most real baseball fans have the utmost respect for the Cardinals and their organization, and would never stoop so low. I'd like to echo what Joe Girardi announced at Wrigley and telecast on Fox, June 22, 2002: "Thanks for your patience. I regret to inform you that because of a tragedy in the Cardinals' family, today's game has been cancelled. Please be respectful when you find out eventually what has happened. I ask that you say a prayer for the St. Louis Cardinals' family."
Amen.

While this is questionable behavior to say this least, I also think it is somewhat questionable to to attribute this isolated incident to all Cubs fans. I would also like to say that as it is in most cases I do not feel any party was completely innocent in this event. While most would say that the these fans crossed a line with the Kile reference, some would say that your friend also crossed a line by his Lee reference. I am not saying that I lump these two into the same category, but the fact remains I believe the Lee comment was also distasteful and probably helped to escalate the situation as opposed to calm the situation.
In other words it seems you and your friend, instead of taking the higher road in this situation, chose to bait these fans with what could be considered questionable barbs; as soon as the other fans respond with something you feel is 100% off limits you choose to get on a public forum and berate all cubs fans as classless. Definitely a way to set yourself in a much higher class than these (probably) drunk fans.
Now that I have said my piece let the berating begin.

While I won't agree saying cubs fan show no class, I'll certainly say that of all fans I've attended games with, Cubs fans have been by far the most irritating and disrespectful.
While it may not have been a great decision to make the Lee comment, it certainly wasn't the most harmful thing to say. The Kile comment was really over the line though. There's a difference between making a joke about someone whose injured for a few months and someone who has recently departed and was a good person.

I don't mean to catergorize all Cubs fans. I am just pointing my finger at those 3 guys. I have several good friends who are Cubs fans as well as knowledgable, respectful baseball fans. These guys obviously were not. I posted multiple threads on this site because I wanted people to read it and realize how low some fans are willing to take it. We ALL need to think about being more respectful at games. I was really pi$$ed off when I wrote that post. I think all the feedback on this has been positive, and I appreciate all the comments. Again, I apoligize for the hinted generalization.

Unfortunately, as long as alcohol and baseball go hand in hand, you will get juvenile behavior like this out of all fans regardless of team. Despicable.

As everyone else has said, they were probably drunk and already idiots to begin with. Not all Cubs fans are like that. I have met many stupid Cardinals fans, but I know there are some intelligent ones out there, even though I've met very few of them.

When you bring 50 000 people together, it's a good bet that there will be a few idiots in the group. Happens in every city and any large gathering.

It wasn't the entire city. Only an idiot would blame Bartman. I see no excuse for Alex Gonzalez bobbling the double play ball.

I hate 90% of Cub fans (0% @ BBF). Whenever the Cubs come into Cincinnati, the fans come and on 700 WLW's "Extra Innings", they call in and make stupid comments on how great the Cubs are and how crappy the Reds are (aka-calling Adam Dunn the worst hitter in baseball, the Cubs that year the best ever).

Well put. Bartman was the 'romantic' choice. Any knowledgable fan knows it was Gonzo, and there's plenty of knowledgable North Side Supporters.
When Gonzo got traded to Montreal there was alot of talk about how it would be a fresh start for him, how he was never comfortable again in Chitown after The Error.

Did anyone set Gonzo's car on fire or send him death threats? I hear Bartman misses the authentic Chi-town italian beefs. Can't get the real thing anywhere else.

Dusty Baker came to the bar I was at and hung out after Saturday's game. He was drinking an Old Style oil can. Looked like he was having a good time. Most of the Cards fans were cool, except some jackass that felt the need to tell him he hated the Cubs.

That comment about Kile was way way way over the line. That's reaching over the game into personal issues. But this behavior is not limited to any team's fans, it's all over the MLB team's fans.
That comment was way too witty. After the Lee comment , the Cub fan should have made a counter remark about Jim Edmond's play deteriorating such as "Ha, I bet Lee could hit as good injured as Edmonds does healthily" you know something tongue in cheek ,not going overboard with the Darryl Kile comment.
I hope those bums go to bed and think about the look on the faces of Darryl Kile's kids when they found out their father was dead. Then ask themselves how they feel.

True Cub fans would never do something like that. I have many friends that like the Cards and we argue alot about who is better and sometimes talk some trash after our team beats up on the other, but that small amount of Cub fans that are completely ignorant and don't care about anyone but themselves shouldn't change peoples minds about all Cub fans. Those types of fans are everywhere unfortunately. And it is not just Cub fans.

Wow! I seriously doubt that any real Red Sox fan would ever chant "Thurmaaaan Munsaaaan" in that way. Yea that was uncalled for. But you know some poeple just get boozed and then say god knows what. You really shouldn't worry about that so much. I think I've said it hear before but I once went to a Met/Yankee game at Shea and got some pretty wicked hostility but never anything like that. That was just cold.

Bartleman is to that NLCS what the infamous Bill Buckner was to the 1986 WS Game 6. He's the obvious choice, but if so many other things hadn't happened, his presence wouldn't have meant very much of consequence.

I've known fans of other teams that "joked" about Thurman Munson flight lessons. Some Yankee fans have "joked" about Ted Williams' head having been severed by that organization that freezes these.
As mentioned upthread, you bring 50,000 people together, you'll get commotions. In fact, you'll even get fights among fans of the same team, just as between fans of the home and visiting teams.

You sure they did not say Dunn was the worst fielder in baseball?
Now that I can see...
:)
only pokin' fun....
I think every team has a group of fans that are "out of line".
To generalize such a large fan base, would be unjust.

You could of made them feel like real heels if you suggested that you are related to Kyle. They would have apologized and backtraked pretty fast then?
The Lee comment though was really what brought that on. If youre gonna run Cub smack, just stick with your team hasn't won a WS since your river ran the right way.

That's not just Cubs' fans, every team has some loser fans. I get very loud and opinionated at the game, but its all in fun. Some people start drinking and get out of hand, which makes it bad for everyone. Those people also need to remember that there are alot of kids there.

This thread showed up this week around the same time as I saw a Cubs game on TV, and I wanted to start a thread saying how cool that I thought some Cubs fans were.
It was the top of the 9th, there were still a lot of the Wrigleyville faithful in the crowd despite being blown out, and a couple of girls (well, they were fully grown, but still--girls) were dressed in full Cub regalia, standing and cheering for their team: "C'mon, Cubs!"
If this was L.A. (or a lot of other places), they would have been home by now, or at the mall or whatever. But this is the essence of those who I know to be Cub fans, and true fans of any team: they are there to support their team; they know that "it ain't over till it's over;" and they seemed to be having a good time at the game, despite their team's on-field misfortune for that one day.
Sorry you ran into some jerks, but unfortunately they are everywhere. I just don't think they are representative of Cubs fans in general.

Every team has obnoxious fans. Some cities have more than others. I've encountered plenty of rude Cards fans over the years and I'm sure other fans have met rude Reds and Indians fans.
Overall though I'd say the worst are undoubtedly Red Sox and Yankee fans. Actually, I'd include Mets fans there too. I guess the closer you get to the coasts, especially the east coast, the worse it gets.

The true Dodger fans have not known winning or losing
since 1957.
Maybe the Cubs haven't won a World Series since 1908,
but at least they were big leaguers before and after 1908.
The Cubs are home grown-not swiped away!

Cubs have had more 90+ lost seasons in every decade than the Dodgers have had since 57.
The Tribune company knows no matter the product they put on the field they will sell out almost every game and turn a huge profit so why spend the money to field a winning club.
