What's up with this guy? His stats look like the Clay Dalrymple,Mike Ryan days.

Just another backup catcher who can't hit. He had a nice year in Baltimore last year in very limited duty. Hits an occasional HR, but his K/BB ratio is 4 to 1.

He reminds me of Haywood (Pete Vuckovich) from Major League - "...led the league last year in every major offensive category, including nose hair..."

Gott admit, the Sal's Pals fan club is pretty darn funny looking..

First off Sal is the man- He is a total beast

But what i find funny is how fasano as a player isnt half as good as lieby(thats not a compliment to lieberthal) Yet he still has more fans then mike lieberthal will ever have in his life.

I watched Sal last year with the O's and he does grow on you. He plays hard and hates it when he fails. He hit .250 in 160 AB's with 3 doubles,11 homers and 20 RBI's(!). If a pitcher throws it to an exact spot,Sal will take it out.He didn't have that kind of fan club here.
Mike Ryan would be thrilled that someone remembers him!

Mike Ryan(1969) 132 Games

447 AB's 17 doubles,2 triples,12 Homers 44 RBI's .204 Ave.

I think it is official; Sal Fasano is the most loved backup in the major leagues.

I'm glad for him.If you look at his career,he's worked very hard to get a chance to stay up for entire seasons. I think I heard on an O's broadcast last year that he and his wife had a baby . I hope he's got enough time in for the MLB pension. A good backup catcher is important.Look at Todd Pratt's career.

He is like Tomas Perez, a very friendly guy who teammates love

I was sad that Perez left as were the players...but I am glad Tomas gets to play alot more in Tampa Bay...he even made a highlight play a couple of days ago

Sal buying pizza set a new standard for fan appreciation. Unfortunately for the rest ot the players, it took a backup probably making league miniumum to show them how its done. Look forward to the pest of the bench to follow suit: J-roll's bakery crew to get some Amoroso rolls, and the Burrell's babes section to be passed up a gross of morning-after pills.

oo, I'd take Sallie back in a heartbeat as backup! I loved the guy...no one plays as hard. And, when you need (I mean really need a hit) he's there.

What a guy. He's not the best....but he has a lot of heart.

Welcome Whiz Kid. :waving Enjoy this site. It's alot of fun. Do they really say that about Sal? That's pretty funny! I think he fits in very nicely there. It's not a bad job being a backup catcher in Philadelphia. Take care!

Sal got 2 hits, including his 5th double last night against our Nats. He raised his average to .253. He's doing a nice job!

How about the terrific hustling, sliding catch he made against the Mets the other day on the attempted bunt that was popped foul?

Sal's been in the game for quite a few years now. He knows what his talent limitations are and doesn't take his backup job for granted. He gives 100% all the time and knows he only has so many years to support his family through baseball. He's old school and appreciates each day that he's on a major league roster.

Sal goes 4 for 4 last night with his 6th double and third homer. He's up to .281 now. The Phils got a bargain here!

How long will Lieberthal be out? Sal could be starting for awhile?

W_Marone
06-09-2006, 02:00 PM
Na I learned its not a DL injury, just a day to day injury, but some of the phillies pitchers such as Leiber only pitch with Fasano catching.

JohnGelnarFan

Why did they do this? The staff was used to him and he wasn't hitting that badly. Lieberthal may be healthy but Sal never complained about being a backup. Did they bring up a catching prospect that they wanted to get some MLB experience? I hope he gets another job. He deserves one.

Sal is your typical replacement level back-up catcher. They come, they go.

Sal signed with the Yankees, who DFA'd Kelly Stinnett to make room for him. The Phils received minor league infielder,Hector Made,in return. He's back in the bigs!

Imapotato

Happy for Sal that he goes to the Yankess, but has to cut his haior and shave the satche :(

Thing is the Phils weren't expecting Coste to come up big (although WE all knew in ST, Coste should have made the team and we should have traded Lieberthal)

Then we have Ruiz, who I am not high on...the guy isn't too bright in baseball terms....and is basically a backup in the making

Now just imaging having Estrada? *sigh*

SportStarMarc

Coste is doing pretty well, and honestly in retrospect it was the right move. The only option would be keeping Fasano as a backup but I wouldn't do that with Lieby coming off the DL. Sure he was and probably will be loved in Phila, but it's one of few smart managerial moves on the part of the Phillies.

W_Marone
08-13-2006, 06:41 AM
I have a great Idea, get rid of Leiberthal and keep Coste and Fasano.

SportStarMarc
08-13-2006, 08:33 PM
Fasano doesn't put up as good numbers as Lieberthal, and it's not worth keeping him just because some wacko's in section 304 like him. Do what's best for the team to win. Keep Lieberthal, let him go after the season, and seek a long term replacement. I'd recommend looking to ATL who have one of my personal favorites, Brian McCann, and one of my personal faves as far as minor league players go, Jarrod Saltalamacchia.

W_Marone
08-13-2006, 08:47 PM
Coste is putting up numbers better than Lieberthal, start him, like I said, get rid of Leiberthal, Fasano as backup. The thing is Lieberthal isnt helping the team win, he has shotty defense, horrific actually, no arm, and he cant hit. How is that helping the team win? The team doesnt need another bat, they can score runs we know that, they need a catcher who can help the struggling staff out. Coste and Fasano are liked by the pitchers where Leiberthal really isnt.

SportStarMarc
08-14-2006, 12:39 PM
Lieberthal is the longest tenured Phillie; he's well known and established within the Phillies organization. He provides more experience than Fasano (as far as games played) and puts the Phillies in a better position to win in my opinion. I'm not saying he's the next Johnny Bench but he's their best option to keep for the rest of the season and then jettison.

W_Marone
08-14-2006, 08:12 PM
In no way think that's correct, how does a catcher that the pitchers dont like pitching with suppose to help a team win, and his batting about .235 right now with what three homeruns? Thats not helping, Coste is hitting over .300 and is hitting a lot better than Lieberthal is. Lieberthal only had one great season, 1999, and since then hasnt been all that great. His tenure with the Phillies have nothing to do with his effectivness, becuase he is a total lack to the Phillies.

SportStarMarc
08-15-2006, 07:19 PM
Whoa, I'm not making this a competition between Lieberthal and Coste. My point in keeping Lieberthal is in competition with Fasano, not Coste. I agree with you all along, Coste should be starting, at least if he keeps up the good work. I only stand behind Lieberthal when it comes to Sal Fasano.
