Is he still 47? I can't believe how good of shape he's in. He's got the body of a 25 year old.

Well somebody has to be the oldest player to have ever hit a home run.

Wait, wasn't B.J. Surhoff 48 last year? He surely must've hit a HR?

Julio Franco is a guy that drinks a protein shake every day at 3 AM, he is a very dedicated man, he works hard, and other thing, did you see what type of bat he is swinging, a 48oz bat, I think.

It's old-timer's day for Franco--Julio, 47, homers to rally Mets (http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/story/410843p-347566c.html)
SAN DIEGO - Julio Franco became the oldest player in major-league history to homer. He made the Mets' first losing streak of 2006 old news, too, as the Mets opened a 10-game road trip with an uplifting victory last night.

Franco deposited a pinch-hit, two-run homer into the short porch down the right-field line at Petco Park with one out in the eighth inning off righty reliever Scott Linebrink. The shot gave the Mets the lead for the first time en route to a six-run inning and a 7-2 win over the Padres.

At 47 years, 240 days, Franco supplanted Jack Quinn (46 years, 357 days) - a pitcher who took the mound until he was 50 - as the oldest player to homer.

"If I hit the home run tonight and we lost the ballgame, the record is still broken, but that's not what we're here for. It means a lot because we won the ballgame," said Franco, who will send his bat or the ball to the Hall of Fame, and already was the oldest player to hit a grand slam and a pinch-hit homer and have a multihomer game.

Ouch Wilkerson! B.J. was born in 1964! I guess he retired but he was productive to the end.

Oh gawsh, stealing the back pages (both of them at that) *AND* a Yogi line. Man, you folks are thieves in the middle of the night, I'll tell ya! :D :p

That was a very nice pic of Julio, regardless of how it's been cropped.

Just remember, any longball that he hits in May or later will automatically be a record. Surely Cooperstown will be collecting the bats and ball (presume they can even find it). :D

Sorry to hear about the loss of your beloved Mom. On the opposite end, two of his youngest teammates, David Wright and Jose Reyes weren't even born when he made his 1982 debut.

I think most people here would like to believe your mom caught Julio's achivement from a front row seat in a very prestigious section.

She liked Julio so much she stood in line with me to get his autograph.
And she got it twice, on the SAME baseball at different times :laugh Julio laughed the second time too. Maybe THAT is my favorite piece of memorabilia

My condolences to all. :(

I think Julio could play into his late 50's and still produce. It's up to him if he wants to continue playing that long.

RMB, please tell us more about your Mom's love for seeing Julio Franco play. Any stories or times or games that she'd stay up late for or anything she'd tell you, if you can share a little of this with us, I'm quite sure that many of us would love to hear it.

I'm sure that she was a wonderful person as well as baseball--and Julio Franco--fan. :)

She stood in line with me one time outside to get his autograph. It started raining and I asked if she wanted to leave and she said no. Her favorite oldtimer was Larry Doby, which was pretty amazing for a white in the 1950s. One of the last times sh was able to ride in a car, I took her down to see my brother. We saw a weird license plate that said TOE2. I remember reading that Lou Groza got vanity plates for his cars TOE1, TOE2 ... My mom also followed the Browns. She said she would wave at him if i drove by and honked, so how could I refuse? I drove by the car, sure enough it was Lou, I honked and you better believe my Mom waved her arm off :laugh Not bad for a seventy plus year old :dance  :p :clapping

I was just looking at Julio's career stats and it is noted that he has more than 4,100 hits in his entire professional career (minors, overseas, MLB). Is their a record for most hits in a professional career?

Good point ABF. Pete Roses total including the minors is 4683 so he's got a little ways to go to pass that.

No Pete Rose has more. Rose had 4256 major league hits plus 427 minor league hits.

I think at his age they ought to let him use stroids, sort of like how they let Burliegh Grimes continue to throw his spitball.

PS. This post is meant to be sarcastic.

Hey, who said I'm just a Yankee fan. Baseball comes first. Now I was thinking it was *YOU* that was the Yankee fan! ;) :p

That was a *LOVELY* story about your beloved and unfortunately, departed Mom. May she forever rest very peacefully in her eternal seats in a very wonderful place. :)

All that energy in a woman of 70! Should've gotten her a uniform and she if she could play! :D
