Not to interrupt or anything, and welcome to all the newcomers, but this is for the most part strictly a baseball discussion board. Casual conversation should be restricted to PMs, not the public boards.

Hi Cap'n. Some of us are just deciding to move over from another "baseball just discussion board," so that works for us. Joepepsi was leading the way. O.K.

That's great, Bill. Glad to have you all, and there's plenty room for more. You won't find a better baseball discussion board. For the most part, everyone across the board is very well informed about baseball and respectful of eachother. The Orioles aren't my team, but they are my brother's, so I've taken in quite a few Orioles games in Detroit over the years, and have a nice little collection of autographs, including Cal Ripken Jr's, stemming from waiting outside the visitors' locker room at Tiger Stadium after the game.
As for Joepepsi, thanks for spreading the word.

Aye, aye Cap'n. I'll keep it clean and on topic.

This is a nice site. Very fast. I like all the categories. I am eager to enter the HOF discussions.

Ok Joe and Bill, let's do this right. In the Orioles first year in Baltimore,1954,The team leader in homeruns had 8.Who was he?

joepepsi

Bill will know. I don't. I should.

BoogP
04-19-2006, 04:43 PM
Hi, my name is BoogP. Otherwise known as Boog. Also known by some other monikers--Bill, Joesodie and BaseBawl can attest to that--but good taste prevents us from visiting that right now. I'm new here also. First post. I don't know that much about baseball, but I like to tell myself I'm still learning.

Boy, they keep this place neat and clean, don't they?

Oh, and Junior Stephens. Who is hardly remembered today when the talk turns to shortstops--although because of the New York propaganda machine everybody knows Phil Rizzuto and his paltry 4 HRs a year. Vern Stephens, by contrast, averaged 22 HRs and 105 RBIs during a 10-year stretch in the 1940s and early 50s. (Anybody who tells you that Cal was the first of the slugging SSs needs to learn about Wagner, Vaughan, and Stephens, too, among others.) Junior Stephens was also an eight-time All-Star and in the top 10 in MVP voting six times, which means he really doesn't deserve to be forgotten. He was pretty much washed by the time the Orioles got him. Died of a heart attack, sadly, while still a young man.

Do they serve beers here, or what?

Bill813
04-19-2006, 06:15 PM
Ooh, an initiation test. As Boog noted, Vern "Junior" Stephens (http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/BAL/1954.shtml) had 8 HRs in 1954. He also had a team high 46 RBI.

Boog, give 'em one of your "who am I" games?

JohnGelnarFan
04-19-2006, 07:12 PM
That is correct! You're too modest. You know enough about baseball if you can write that biography of Stevens. He was a great hitting shortstop. Unfortunately,he played for the Browns(and O's)

Oh wow.

Welcome everyone! I'm glad to see some folks out there are interested enough to join the club. Feel free to peruse through our encyclopedia of threads in the main area while yer at it.

I'll rename this thread so all the introductions can be made here. Thanks to CCN for letting everyone know ahead of time.

BTW--you'll find the original "Roll Call" currently on page 5. ;)

Enjoy,

Quick question--how many people here are registered at the Baltimore Sun website? If so, does registration come with any headaches?

I usually post stories I pick up from the associated press, but every now and then a Sun article deserves to make it here.

Thank you for your anal non-welcome, and goodbye. You might learn something from this, but I suspect it'll be erased first.

No, but I'm sure the site will probably fold up now that we're going to lose out on posts that without a doubt would have been life-altering for us all. Now I know how Pagliacci felt.

joepepsi
04-20-2006, 09:33 AM
Well, Basebawl is really funny and he gives good updates on the farm club. His posts may not be life altering, but they can help change the persepctive on a day and turn that frown upside down.

Cool. He sounds like he'll be a fine addition, as everyone who is relatively new here and posting in the Orioles forum has been. I honestly hope he does stick around.
I'm not trying to be anal, but a lot of off-topic banter is discouraged here. That's how the site has been since it was created, and the site has been very successful following that ideology. There definitely is room for a sense of humor, and it can be much appreciated at times. As far as I'm concerned your endorsement means he's going to be beneficial to the site, joe.

Iron Jaw. Never mind the Cardinal logo - that's my National League club. The Orioles were always my AL club. My grandfather played in the St. Louis Browns' org. a millenium ago. I began watching the O's when I was a mere five years old in the Summer of 1961. My first Oriole hero was Diamond Jim Gentile who had a monster season that year (unfortunately, some guy from the Yankees overshadowed Jim that season).

I watched them throughout the 60's when they were an emerging powerhouse. After Gentile was traded to KC, Brooks Robinson became my favorite. I'll never forget when they picked up Frank Robinson for Milt Pappas (and I liked Milt). Frank was just the ingredient they needed to get over the hump - and over the hump they got winning that World Series so impressively in 1966.

I remember the pain of losing the 1969 WS to the Mets. I still can't figure out how the Mets pulled that one off.

The 70s were also exciting - the O's won three pennants, two additional division titles and the 1970 WS (they also blew the '71 and '79 WS to the Pirates after leading 2-0 and 3-1:( ). From 1960-1985 Baltimore was the winningest franchise in baseball. With the exception of a couple of seasons, they were usually in the pennant race. They had the best minor league system in baseball at the time.

The early 80's were good, but the period from 1986-88 was quite demoralizing. Then, suddenly, after a 107 loss season in 1988, the O's became the darlings of the league in 1989 and just missed the AL East title.

The 90's had a couple of flareups and a division title - and a blown chance at the WS when the had too many LOB's against the Indians. But since then, the O's have been downtrodden for the most part. I still root for them, and hope they win the pennant - but I wish they'd get rid of that crook who owns the club.

Ignore the Sox av. I like the O's too. The Sox are my "History" team and the O's are my "Now" team in terms of knowledge. I normally stick to the Fantasy and Web Improvements forums, but I occasionally stray into the Trivia, History, HoF, Orioles, and Red Sox forums.

Nice to have you here MSM. My family is from New England and I was born in Boston. I always liked the Red Sox,especially in the late 60's and early 70's.

Are you a Baltimore Orioles fan?
Tired of nine (9) losing seasons in a row?

Well the newest song I have released is for us.
It's called "Let Go Of Them O's (Mr. Angelos)" and it's a protest song encouraging
Peter Angelos to sell the team. I hope you like it and will support the idea of enticing someone to buy the
Baltimore Orioles and make them winners again.

Hello guys, this is hagersbush- i came here sometime ago & then
stopped posting because of not enough posters.I can vouch for
Joe Pepsi,Boog,Basebawl & Bill.

They are good knowledgeable posters who know baseball & the
orioles.I HAVE ENJOYED THEIR COMPANY on many a dreary day.
lately as an oriole fan I,ve had plenty of those kind of days.

If during the next couple of weeks the Oriole F.O. gets motivated
& does something we may have topics to talk about.:atthepc
