Again chatting with another coach on our team... I was taught and believe to hit the bag with the outside foot while rounding. Hit the inside of the bag with the outside leg (right leg) and off you go. He was taught to hit with the left foot and cross over.

Opinions? I think the advantages to hitting with the right foot are obvious. Naturally he doesn't feel that way and sees the advantages to hitting with the left foot.

Hit the inside corner with either foot, it doesn't matter. The goal is not to break stride or slow down.

Agreed on the not slowing down and breaking stride.

Most teach, "Left is best but don't chop your stride to achieve this" You'll get a little better 'lean' if you can use the left foot.

I don't see this. Probably because I didn't do it.

Again, probably because I'm not used to it, but it seems awkward to hit the base with the left foot. I've done it plenty to not break stride but given the opportunity I've used the right.

I've been known to be wrong though.

I've always hit the bag with my right.

I'm not the fastest guy, but when it comes to rounding bases i can get around because of this/being able to cut the corner (i lean a lot).

Trying to figure out how crossing over is quicker.

Right foot - Hit the inside corner of the bag. Move out a little 20 feet from the bag to avoid too wide a turn. Try not to break stride. Run like the wind.

Elliott.

Except for the run like the wind part, that is what I did.

Left leg so you wont blow out your knee when you slip on the wet base with your right leg.....TRUST me.

you can just jump on the base with both legs...

Touch the bag with your hand in a swooping action. You can really cut the corners that way and have fun doing it....especially if you do a "sread eagle" with your arms and lean to touch the bag.

While coaches mostly care the runner take the best turn possible regardless of choice or foot, left is better. The players on my college team who touched with the right were encouraged to switch.

- The left foot allows the runner to ramp the turn (lean in).
- The left foot allows push off the base and push from the right foot in the next step if excelerating.
- You're less likely to slip and jam your knee with the left foot. You have the right foot to regain balance.
