Most memorable Expos game

Hi everyone,

What was your fav. Expos game that you attended?? What was so memorable about this game?

I never saw a game in person (poor me), so I can't participate.

Two games stand out in my memory, both in 1979 :

-June 23, Philadelphia vs Montreal : One-hitter by Steve Rogers against the Phillies. He was so sharp that night. The single he allowed to Dave Rader was a weak grounder between first and second base.

- July 27, Pittsburgh vs Montreal : Le Grand Orange's return to Montréal as a pinch-hitter. 8th inning, 6 minute standing ovation by 59,000 + fans. Wow :) He only hit a small blooper to right field, though.

I've been meaning to tell you guys this story for awhile. Was waiting for the right moment, and what better timing than my 500th post on BBF to do it (I know, I know, some people get 500 posts a week, it took me almost two years. What can I say, I never made a secret of my laziness...)

Expos have been plagued by bad timing pretty much all the way trhu their history. Becoming good just as the Pennsylvania teams had their shining moments, arriving during the pre-olymipic period and thus being outfitted with a stadium ill adapted for baseball whose prohibitive cost rendered almost impossible the construction of another stadium, having Atlanta transferred to the East when they rose to power after sucking for decades in the west, the 94 season :ughh and the rest... But I have to say that my personnal timing with the Expos was very much off. On two seperate occasions, the shortest and the longest game I ever attented at the stadium happened at the worst possible time.

First off, July 28th, 1999. At that point in my life, I had a great interest in a certain lady who had developped a fondness for the game. And we went to the stadium on a couple of occasions that year, and the years after that even tough by then I had moved on to, shall we say, better things. But that night happened right at the pinnacle of my interest for her. And I have to say it was a sensationnal evening. Conversation was flowing in the most natural way, we were having fun, quite frankly, she was hotter that night than I ever saw her. So, obviously, I was hoping for a 15 inning, 4 hour affair, so the fun could last. But it was not meant to be. Javier Vazquez threw a gem that night, 3 hitting the Cubs, and he wrapped things up in 2:11, the shortest Expos game I ever attended. That's what I call bad timing.

Now, let's fast forward 4 years, to the night of July 25th, 2003. Big evening as about 20 family members (extended family that is) attend the Expos-Braves game. It's pretty much the biggest ever gathering of members of my family outside "official" partys like Christmas or Fathers day. And it is at a Expos game, I'm bursting with pride at the tought that so many poeple showed up.

Only thing is, were in the middle of "Les Francofolies" in Montréal and Pierre Flynn, a Québec singer-songwritter I really enjoy (just put my hands on his latest live CD "Vol solo". I highly recommend it) is giving an outdoor performance in the downtown area, at 11 PM. So, I said to myself, no problem. If the game lasts, say, three hours, All I have to do afterwards is to hop on the Metro, I'll be at Place-des-Arts in plenty of time for the show.

But since I've mentionned that this post is about my bad timing, I believe you guys know where this is going...

It had already been a pretty long game by the eight inning, when the Braves scored four to take a 8-2 lead. But the Expos clawed back in, scoring five in the bottom of the eight, thanks in large part to a misplayed ball by Larry Jones in left, before scoring another run in the ninth to tie it up. Wil Cordero had a chance to end it in regulation, and by then I could still have made it in time, but I knew he wouldn't. And he didn't. But there was no way I was leaving while the Expos were on the verge of mounting an incredible comeback, that goes without saying.

Finally, the game ended on a Jung Bong wild pitch in the 11th, after more than four hours of play. Mister Flynn was already a quater trhu is perfomrmance at the time the game ended, and there was no real point in going. It was a great game, a great evening and I enjoyed it a lot, don't get me wrong. But perhaps, perhaps, the team could have done that at another time. I went to the Expos only once having made plans for after the game. And I attended only one Expos extra innings contest in all my life. It had to happen on the very same night.

So, there you have it. The shortest game I ever attended I wish would have been the longest, and the my longest game by far happened the only time I went to the park on a schedule.

Sigh, that was some game AG!
None will top off the game I went to, versus yhe Phillies when the Expos were running for the wild card, and Florida was slumping, I went with my father, we watched the Expos beat the Phils in extra-innings, the Big o was as electronic and "full" as ever, there were A LOT of fans!
The Expos tied the game because of a PH double by Jose Macias, and i can't recall the rest!

I went to alas, only 3 games in 2003, and they were all victories...say, I shoula gone to ALL the games, then they'd be 162-0!:eek: :D :crazy

My first game I attended is important to me, I'm still looking for it on baseball almanac. It was 1995 I think and they were playing the Astros, I was amazed at the small fireworks when Henri Rodriguez hit a homerun. I think the game went to extra-innings, and the expos won it on a hit by a pinch hitter I think.

Another game I went to was against the Dbacks. Miguel Batista was pitching against Vasquez and the game was won in the 9th inning or extra innings on a Vladimir Guerrero homerun it was amazing to me.

The last Expos game I attended may be the most memorable one, but not for what happened on the field as it was the last game at Olympic Stadium. I was really sad when Termell Sledge was the last out of the game, and sadder when the flashed by pieces of Expos history on the big screen. I was one of the people who stayed pretty long after the game, I wanted to have a photographic memory of the Big O. It also felt bad when the people took away the retired numbers off the bleacher walls. I had just arrived in Montreal to study after living in San Francisco, and it hurt that when I was finally here, the Expos would leave. I only had time to see 3 last games at Olympic Stadium before saying good-bye to the Expos.

Well nothing's going to top Gus' story but I might as well share my story..

My most memorable game was the last one I went to on August 30th 2004 against the Chicago Cubs. I was excited because not only was I going to see the Expos, but I was getting to see my non-Expo favourite player, Nomar Garciaparra and a couple of future HOFers in Sosa and Greg Maddux who was on the hill. It was a night game, and I had spent the day, visiting the downtown and touring le vieux port. I saw alot of Cubs hats around town that day, and as I was on the Metro heading to the stadium I started talking to a guy with a Cubs hat.

I got to the Stadium just as the Cubs were wrapping up BP. I was walking out to the bleachers hoping to catch a ball but they stopped as I was heading out there. Rocky Biddle was in the middle of a floundering season and was actually starting the game. The turning point was in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Juan Rivera clearly beat a throw to the plate but was called out. In the top of the 3rd the Cubs scored 4 runs.

I got to see Schneider pick off Grudzelanek at 2nd and I got to see Sledge launch a 2 run shot to right in the 9th to give the Expos a flicker of hope but it was too little too late.

Haven't been out to the Stadium since then. Heck, I haven't even been past the Berri Metro stop since I've moved back to town.

One interesting side note to that game. Our good friend Monarchs29 was at that same game, while visiting from Newfoundland. We didn't find out that we were at the same game until a week or so later so we never met.

I believe that was on the night of July 30th, 2002. Vlad had a walk-off homerun against Byun-Yung Kim in the 10th. Two days after, he had a another walk-off homerun against Curt Schilling, also of the Diamondbacks in the 9th. That's what I call winning a series by yourself.

None will top off the game I went to, versus yhe Phillies when the Expos were running for the wild card, and Florida was slumping, I went with my father, we watched the Expos beat the Phils in extra-innings, the Big o was as electronic and "full" as ever, there were A LOT of fans!
The Expos tied the game because of a PH double by Jose Macias, and i can't recall the rest!

I went to alas, only 3 games in 2003, and they were all victories...say, I shoula gone to ALL the games, then they'd be 162-0!:eek: :D :crazy

For several years running in the late '80s and early '90s, a buddy and I went up to the Big O to see a game. This one was another remarkable comeback from the 1986 World Series champs. Enjoyment depended on which side you were rooting for, but there was a good sprinkling of fellow Mets fans in the crowd of 33,093 that night.

Starter Jay Tibbs was sailing along, having allowed only two hits through the first seven. But he weakened in the 8th, allowing the first three men to reach. Lefty specialist Bob McClure didn't retire either of the men he faced. Then Tim Burke came on, hit Gary Carter with a pitch, yielded a sac fly, and served up a three-run homer to Mookie Wilson.

But the Expos came back, mainly courtesy of Howard Johnson, playing shortstop. Hojo stayed back on Tim Wallach's easy grounder, allowing Wallach to reach. Then on what probably should have been a DP, he heaved the ball three feet over Tim Teufel's head into right field. Keith Hernandez saved him another error on the next play, but then ace pinch-hitter Wallace Johnson tripled.

In the 9th, Jeff Reardon's control lapsed -- he walked three and gave up a key single to Carter. Jesse Orosco came on for the save.

I'm from Ottawa and been to a few games over 20 years. Including 2 Pearson cup games with the Jays (1 each in Exhibition stadium and the Big O) and to games in the early and late 80's and a game in 2000 and in their final season.

But the most memorable game by far was the Dennis Martinez perfect game that I heard on the radio.

Very memorable call indeed, altough I don't believe that was really proper spanish.

If I'm not mistaken, el perfecto means "The perfect". EL PRESIDENTE; LA PERFECCION (SP?) meaning, perfection, would have probably been more sound from a linguistic standpoint. But then again, you lose the effect of the repetition of the article "El".

You can script a World Series call, but a perfect game, you have to make it on the fly. We'll let "El Presidente; el perfecto" stand. It is what it is.

I just watched this game the other night - a recent video find ...not a classic! lol

April 17. 1977 at the stade - Ellis Valentine hit a HR over the LF fence in the bottom of the 8th which turns out to be the winning run - it was my 1st time seeing Valentine, Dawson & Cromartie in the OF togther ... my 1st game April 8, 1970 vs the Cardinals Bob Gibson pitched - my 1st ballgame ever .. July 22, 1989 Expos down 5-1 going into the 9th - home runs by Hudler (2 on) & Garcia (1 on) win it ... so many more.

I only saw the Expos live twice.

In 1974 I saw Jack Billingham and the Big Red Machine beat us up 7-2 or something like that. Too bad I didn't appreciate the number of Hall of Famers... Prior to the game I managed one Expo autograph: Ernie Macinally (too tired to get the right spelling, sorry). I knew things wouldn't be good that night.

In 1976, during the olympics I saw Steve Rogers v. Tom Seaver the day after the Expos traded Pepe Mangual. After blowing a 2-0 lead, Del Unser led of the bottom of the 10th with a walk-off shot that was just fair. Huzzah!!

The are lots of TV memories, but two of my favourite obscure ones are:
(1980?) Julyish versus the Phillies at the big O. Bottom of the 9th, Expos down a run with two out. Ellis Valentine on first. He tries to steal 2nd (with 2 out!?!?!?!). The throw was off (it may have hit him) and goes into right center. Valentine scoots to third but doesn't stop and steamrolls his way home. The relay has him out by 85 ft, but Valentine absolutely pulverizes the catcher who can't hang on to the ball, tie game!! Expos go on to win in extras.

It may be my memory playing tricks (if anyone can verify the following, great!), but I remember a game against the Cards ('87?) when Vince Coleman was in his prime. He reached first base in his first three appearances. Was thrown out trying to steal second. Next he was picked off. The capper was the third time when the first baseman for us dropped the ball on a throw over and it rolled under Coleman as he was getting up. Coleman swatted the ball away down the right field line aways and was promptly ejected!! Thrown out, picked off, ejected AND the Expos won! Anyone recall this at all?

Or when Floyd Youmans had a perfect game into the 7th? He was on fire... Raines homering in the bottom of the 8th for the cycle? Raines in '87 at Shea on his return from drug suspension and tripling off the first pitch, then after Vance Law tied the game with a two-out 9th inning base hit, Raines hit a 10th inning grand slam into the left-field bullpen to win the game (3 outs later, of course). In a failed 9th inning comeback, (I think) Raines, LeFlore and Wallach (I think) hit back-to-back-to-back triples?
I remember a game that (in Canada) was only on CBC French, from Busch Stadium, Ted Simmons, in his first AB hit a ball into the right field corner and Valentine threw a b-b on a dime to 2nd to get Simmons by an eyelash. great stuff!

Sorry for all the TV stuff. (One more). I think the Cards beat us 1-0. Andujar vs. Rogers. I think there were something like four hits in the game, three infield hits (two off home plate) scored the only run. Any of this ring any bells or am I glamourizing the Expos from all those heartbreak years?

I went to two Expos games. It was on 2004 when I visited the beautiful city of Montreal as the Expos were playing the Marlins.
First of all, I have to tell you guys that I went to the two games as a Marlins fan. However, like I said before, the Expos always came as a very second close to the Marlins, my favorite team. I got to Montreal on Thursday July 22 and after sightseeing Montreal and visited QUebec City on Friday the 23 I could attend both Saturday and Sunday games. I have to tell you that the Expos won twice and I still had a blast both games. On Saturday there was the ceremony to honor El Perfecto (whom I traveled with both to and from Montreal and was the nicest guy ever, he even autographed a baseball I have gotten in batting practice that day) and the Expos scored 6 un-answered runs, 3 runs in both the sixth and seventh innings, to thump the Lins 6-2. Rocky Lidle won that game and the most vivid image I have from that game is that I went to look for fries and gravy in the fifth inning and the line was pretty long. By the time I got my fries the place was shaking with people jumping up and down after the xpos had scored the tying run in a two-run triple by Endy Chavez.
Sunday's game was a little easier for the Xpos since Livan was pitching, and he was really on, that day. He retired 17 batters in a row in route to a 6-4 win. The Marlins were losing 6-1 in the 9th inning when they scored 3 runs, to make it a little more closer than it really was.
The fans were great and I met a lot of friendly people at the stadium and at the streets, something you don't see anywhere else. I loved the stadium, I don't know why people were always bashing the Big O., to me it was a great venue. To cap it all off, I met all the Marlins player at the Airport. That to me was the best thing baseball wise that happened to me while at Montreal.
I also loved everything about the city, from the people I met at an art festival the day I arrived to the people I met at the stadium who were really knowleadgeable of the game. Well, I really loved everything about Montreal, so I really don't have any bad memories about my staying in Montreal.
I wish it was not that cold, because I would love to live there.
