Hello,
I am new to this baseball site! I love it!!
I am trying to find facts on an Expos 1970's farm team, and hope someone can help me.
The team is called the Quebec (City) Carnavales, and they were the Expos Eastern League AA team. I believe they were affiliated with the Expos from 1971-77??
Does anyone know the win-loss record for each year? Where I could find scores, rosters, etc? I don't own early Expos media guides, but that could be my best route.
Anything anyone could share with me on this team would be wonderful!
Thanks so much! I really appreciate it!!

Well, first off Stephen, let me welcome you to BBF. It's always great to see new members join in, especially members who have an interest in the Expos and/or baseball in this province and in this country.
I can't help you much with les Carnavals de Québec. All I know is that they really had the 70's look. I believe they had orange uniforms with the head of the famous Bonhomme Carnaval (the mascot of the Québec city winter Carnival) as their logo. Warren Cromartie had a stint with that club he vividly remembers. He's probably not the only one. Québec is a nice place, tough very very much convinced of it's own importance, wich can sometimes make it's inhabitants kind of insufferable...
Any reasons why you are interested by that club?
Again, welcome.

Thanks very much Gus for your reply, and your friendly greetings! I really appreciate it!
I have always been interested in Quebec major and minor league sports teams, although I have never lived in Quebec. I recently purchased a signed Carnavals ball, which is likely from 1971. I am trying to find out as much about the team as possible. I always enjoy picking up items on short-lived, largely-forgotten Quebec major/minor league sports teams.
Thanks again for your help! I am enjoying BBF very much!!

I would suggest you to write to the Québec newspapers such as Le Soleil and/or Le Journal de Québec. They must have all the final stats from each seasons in their old editions. Or if you ever go to Québec, a research at Université Laval would give you probably anything you want.
The Carnavals really had interesting teams in those days. All the Expos stars from the 70s 80s played there such as Steve Rogers, Gary Carter, Larry Parrish, Ellis Valentine, Cro and a few more.
That would even be an excellent topic for a web site.

Gentlemen, a cursory Internet search revealed this link to the SABR:
http://quebec.sabr.org/2000.htm
When I tried clicking on the "1970" decade for more information, I was rewarded with a page in French. My one year of junior high school French has long since escaped me, having studied it before the Expos franchise came into existence. Hopefully, though, it wil be of some assistance.

Some interesting stuff.
73-74 sound like the glory years:
I found this part interesting:
Après la saison 1977, les Expos quittent Québec et Cincinnati font de même à Trois-Rivières. Mis à part les Expos de Montréal, le baseball professionnel disparaît de la province de Québec. Seul le baseball junior demeure. Il faudra attendre 22 ans avec la venue des Capitales de Québec en 1999.
I didn't realize Trois Rivieres had any kind of professional ball. Learn something everyday...

Indeed. One of the notable names that went trhu the Trois-Rivières Reds organization is Ken Griffey senior. Once every so often, you have an older gentleman from the area who goes on TV or in the paper to reminice about little Kenny Jr, a young kid at the time, running around the field during the club's batting practice and such.
You wouldn't believe it now, but this province used to be a hotbed for baseball. Of course we dont need that anymore; we have soccer (i'll edit this post to add a vomiting smilie as soon as it becomes available...)

Here's a very complete and amazing site about professional baseball history in Québec province:
http://histoirebaseball.150m.com/
You can find almost everything: all pro and semi-pro leagues and teams, some standings, lists of MLB players, and much more...
But ... it's in french.

The links are interesting, but unfortunately what little french I knew left me years ago.
Gus, I meant the province of Quebec, not just Quebec City.
Thanks again everyone.

This is the translation of the paragraph folowing the header above, "I found this part interesting." (Parentheses are mine.. Dennis)
The edition 1973 of the Carnivals will allow the Quebec one to discover two big future stars of the Expos of Montréal. Steve Rogers and Gary Crankcases (CARTER?) done stops (sic) to Quebec. The Crankcase (CARTER) road is again (INDEED) well long and she (HE) will take it (TRAVEL) to Cooperstown where it (HE) was intronisé to the Temple (HALL) of the Fame of the Baseball in 2003. As for Steve Rogers, it was the promoter (PROMOTION) leaving number one of the Expos for several seasons what's more to participate in somewhere of stars (SEVERAL ALL-STAR SEASONS).
In 1974, The Carnivals are champions of their division. They align excellents prospects in particular with the infantrymen (INFIELDERS). Jerry White returns for a short period, the remainder of the exterior (OUT) field is composed from Warren Cromartie, Ellis Valentine, Tony Scott and Bombo Will Fasten. Larry Parrish knows (HAS AN) equally a good season to the third goal (BASE). To (AT) the monticule (MOUND?), Bill Atkinson, Joe Gilbert and again Dan Warthen are the names to keep.
Well... you get the gist of it.

I'm drawing kind of a blank here. Did the Expos have a AAA affiliate between the Indianapolis Indians and the Ottawa Lynx? I don't quite remember.

I played in the Montreal Expos system in 1970 and 1971. I started '70 with the Bradenton Expos and then went to West Palm Beach in August. Was with them and started a game in the playoffs. I played for the Expos team in the Florida Instructional League in '70 then with the Jamestown Falcons in '71. Many of the players listed in the above post regarding the Quebec Carnavals were teammates/friends. The Expos had a great organization in those days.

Well, Ex Expo, let me begin by welcoming you to baseball fever. Hope you'll stick around to tell us more about your experiences in the Spos farm system. Like, what was the life in the minor league system for a team that was just getting started, who were the coaches you played for, how did you feel being from the US (I guess) under contract with A) an expansion team and B) an expansion team from Canada. I'd be curious to read about that and I'm sure I'm not the only one.
Again, welcome.

Bob Hansen
Rick Turner
Larry Stroman
Bob Williams
Jim Covington
Bob Babcock
Willie James
Mike Easom
Jim Chapman
John W. Reid

You're very welcome!
I purchased a complete (!) Carnavale home uniform (ca. 1973) from eBay last year.
Here is the (poor, sorry) scan of the team picture with a better-grade close up one particular HOF alumnus. Can anyone (perhaps Ex-Expo) ID the surrounding Carnivales?

The memorabilia source is a Montreal store named Lucille Favreau Antiques.
They specialize in many great Expo items including some of the great Denis Brodeur action photos seen in the "Name the Expo" thread..
I'd love to recreate the Carnivale hat to complete the uni set. Do they sell anywhere blank (non-logo) Expo-style tri-color hats anywhere in Canada?
Enjoy the pix!

I haven't seen the blank Expo hats, in my hometown anyway. If I find a place that sells them I will let you know.
I purchased my signed ball from Lucie Favreau Antiques too! They sell alot of interesting and hard-to-find sports related items. I check their ebay store all the time. You never know what you will find.
The Carnavals home uniform would certainly be a wonderful item to have!!

Lucille Favreau is an outstanding person to deal with - I've bought quite a few historical items, mainly magazines/programs - but for anything related to sports in Montreal she is the best!

The majority of these players are pitchers who played in the Expos minor league system in the early 70's. I believe Stanley Jok was the son of the ex major-leaguer of the same name. Evans is listed as Larry E. Evans in most Sporting New Baseball Guides of that era. Juan Camarena pitched for Jamestown in 1971, Joe Leeder pitched for Jamestown in 1971-1973 and Keith Tinsley was an outfielder in the Gulf Coat League in 1970 and a pitcher for Jamestown in 1971. Steve Keller pitched from the Winnipeg Whips in 1971 and West Palm Beach Expos in 1969-1971 and Denis McSween is a native of Quebec. I am in Winnipeg and saw the Whips probably 50 times in their short existence. I am presently compiling minor league statistics for many of these players from Sporting News Baseball Guides and may have some statistics or access to some that may of interest to both you and SABR-Quebec. If you have any interest, shoot me off an E-Mail. Thanks

These are pretty good. From what I can remember, the Whips jerseys were identical to the ones the Expos wore in 1970-1971 with the exception of the logo. Somewhere packed away, I have a couple of programs with the logo and some player autographs on the front. I will try and dig them up and see if there is any different ones.

Well Joel, we'd sure be interested in learning a little about yourself and your experiences in professionnal baseball, especially your days in Jamestown, if your interested in sharing a little bit of that with us. And welcome to Baseball Fever, hope you'll stick around to participate in all the good baseball talk that goes on around here.
Thanks Gus. I joined the Expo organization in 1971 as one of a few Canadian players. That year Denis McSween and Michelle Dostaler ere also from Canada. The manager was Edie Sadowski. Because we were from Canada we were not involved in the draft back then. The high draft choices that yera were Dan Warthan (2nd) and Glen Tackit 3rd. Interestingly, the #1 choice that year (a shortstop) did not sign. He signed a football scholarship at Tennesee and went on to be astar in the CFL (Condrege Holloway).
I played in the organization for thee summers and then went to spring training again the fourth year before being released. It was great fun and there were many great young kids that went through the organization and many others that went on to have great major league careers.

I guess I sould check these boards more often. I knew and played with all the guys from the Expos minor league system listed above. My general feeling was that the system was very well run by some good baseball people. I think that the success that Montreal enjoyed fairly soon after its inception as an expansion team bears out my belief. We had quality players, many of whom advanced to the bigs and did well. The only Joe I remember from Jamestown '71 was Joe Leeder, a big Canadian right handed pitcher who was pretty good.

I am presently compiling minor league statistics for many of these players from Sporting News Baseball Guides and may have some statistics or access to some that may of interest to both you and SABR-Quebec. If you have any interest, shoot me off an E-Mail. Thanks

Hi, I have just found this sight and it is sure interesting. You sure are mentioning a lot of people that i played ball with in those years. I originally came through the Pirate Organization and ended up with the Expos. I played with the Expos in West Palm, under Lance Nicholls and sure would like to know what happened with a lot of these players, especially Denis McSween my old buddy. I knew he was from Que. but, not really where in Que. I had always thought it was in and around Montreal. If anybody knows more about him i would be happy to learn anything. My name is Rod Dirks, I don't know if anybody remembers me but I was a 6'5'' left handed pitcher from New Westminster B.C. I would sure like to know where I could get some info of myself from those days. I wouldn't know where to even look. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi, my name is Rod Dirks, and a lot of those names are familiar, I played with a lot of them in West Palm and lived with a lot of them out on
Singer island. Those sure were good old days. I was a tall 6'5'' pitcher from New Westminster, British Columbia. I don't know if anyhbody remembers me, but, I had joined the Expos at Daytona and shipped to West Palm from there. I had come over from the Pirates. Good friends in those days were Bill Bolden, Glen Tackitt and his wife and of course my good old friend Denis McSween and his cutey little wife. Any info of these guys or myself sure would be great to see. I wouldn't evn know where to go and look for it. I just happened on to this site. I would thank you for any help you could give me.

Rod,
You must have joined the organization after I left ('71). As a result of this board, I looked for Denis Mc Sween and found him. I also played with Tackitt. I believe he is in Texas some place.

Hi Cliff thanks for answering me. I believe Glen Tackitt was from Witchita Falls, well at least he was when I knew him. About McSween, I couldn't find him at all and you did, way to go. Could you tell me how you went about finding him and how i could contact him? Ya according to what you say I didn't even get to the Expos until you were already gone. Where did you go from there? Where are you from?
Thanks ROD

Rod,
Yes, Tackitt was from Wichita Falls. McSween was and still is from Valleyfield, Quebec. I found him through his curling club in Valleyfield. He told me he has worked for Molson for many years and will retire soon.
I am from L.A. Still here. '71 was my last year in organized ball. Since I quit, I have seen Ray Valenzuela, Bombo Rivera, Chip Lang, Barry Foote, and Dale (Tex) Murray. All were teammates in the minors and good people.

Now there is a name from the past Bombo Rivera, haha. Played with him in West Palm. What i remember most about him is they found him in the sticks somewhere and the size of the bloody bat he used. It's barrel was bigger around than my head. Barry Foote as well, sure miss those guys and the great days. Somebody should put together a get together. I remember when I played with Ellis Valentine he came to camp with a new great big Detroit Land Yacht and about 50 different types of hats in the backseat. Wore one everyday. I thought i had a good arm til I saw him throw a ball right out of the stadium from deep centrefield. Parrish, Valentine, and mhyself were jacking around in centrefield throwing balls as far as we could. Boy did i get a Canadian eye opener.

Yes, that would be very cool to have some sort of reunion. There were a lot of good people and really good baseball players in the Expos system back then. So many talented people never made it to the show.

Wow, it's cool that we have some people reading/posting who actually played with some of the most famous Expos at such a high level. Awesome reading about it! Feel free to share some more stories and Welcome to the Fever:cap:

I had the great joy of seeing a game in Montreal in August of the last year they were there. Bought ticket eight rows back of home plate the day of the game. It cost $25. Had the best time taking the train to and from the park. The under area was spaciuos and clean. Why did so many people dis such a great place for a game? I'll bet that place was rocking when the team was on a roll. What was it like when it was open to the outdoors?
May I also compliment the fans that were there. I think the total was about 7900, but they were great at making noise and staying behind that team that day. I was jumping and screaming as they won in the bottom of the inning. Is there any talk of any team at any other leve ever coming back there?
On a side note: does anyone know of a source that has Vermont Expos items? I have been looking for a logo ball from them for a few years and still have found none.

Since I don't want this thread to die I want to let everyone know that, as a result of the messages here, I have talked on the phone with my old teammate Denis McSween and swapped voice mail messages with Joe Leeder. I have also talked recently with Brian Finnerty. We all played for the Jamestown Falcons in 1971. If you happen to be in Jamestown, you can go to the College Inn and see a team photo of the '71 Falcons. We had a few good beers, I mean times there.

Sorry, I don't have anything from the 1971 season, however, here's a scan of the scorecard from 1972. Note that this is truly a scorecard, heavy cardstock folded in the middle.

Slipped inside the scorecard was a mimeographed lineup of the Jamestown Falcons. The opponents that night were the Niagara Falls Pirates, managed by Chuck Cottier. Omar Moreno is the only name for the Pirates that I remember-he was listed as an outfielder.
Note that Larry Parrish is on the roster for Jamestown as is Joe Leeder.

Yes, I have a scorecard from 1971, too. I was number 24. We had some great players on that team but finished dead last in the NY/Penn League. I know that Tony and Bombo were moved up during the season as well as a few others. Sadowski was a good man and a very good manager.

It was nice to see that Dan Warthen was promoted to pitching coach for the Mets. He is a great guy and was a promising pitching prospect back in Jamestown in 1971. He ended up playing for Watertwon that year. He was drafted ahead of Mike Schmidt and George Brett.

I've been compiling a list of all players in the system - I have approximately 3,800 names so far- any data for minor-leagues pre-1978 is hard to compile and often incomplete. The earliest complete data I could find is the '73 Expos organizational record book. Here's what I've compiled so far on the '71 Jamestown Falcons ... if you have anything you could add that would be appreciated.

Your compilation is very impressive. I can add oly a few more details for you.
Hector Gonzalez was from Puerto Rico. He played in Bradenton in '69 and '70.
Charlie Jackson was from Crockett, Texas. A really nice guy. He was in Bradenton in '70, too.
Keith Tinsley was from Cincinnati. He had been an outfielder in Bradenton in '70 but was converted into a pretty good pitcher.
Juan Camarena was from the D.R.
Juan Correa from P.R.
Larry Evans was from L.A. Another Bradenton '70 guy.
Dan Field was from Chicago.
Not on your list are Brian Finnerty, a first baseman from New Jersey. He played at Pace College before signing. Also, Rich San Fillipo, an infielder from New Jersey who played at Montcalir State before signing.
Bombo Rivera, an outfielder form P.R., was with us for a while before moving up to Quebec, AA.
Let me know if you need any more info.

Thanks Clif - that was helpful ... I had Brian Finnerty listed as Brian or Peter (middle name?) and drafted 1971-June Regular Phase-37 from Pace University but had nothing on him. for 1969-1971 I'm working off the media guides which list only a limted number of minor-league players and few details and draft data. I had nothing on Sam Fillipo.
Also missing info on the following from the above scans (those were helpfull too!):
Abreu, Manny C
Hall, Tom OF
I recently missed out on a 1970 and 1976 organizational guides that would have helped ... anything you can add to these or any other players would be great. I could run a query on players from the era (based on draft and/or birth year) and provide those to you?
Thanks

Tom Hall does not ring a bell with me. Manny Lantigua Abreu was one of our catchers. People confused his last name because he used both his father's (Lantigua) and his mother's (Abreu). He was from the DR.
I can help you with most of the guys that were in the minor league system in the era that I played (1970-1971). Just let me know.

Thanks Cliff ... here's what I pulled out first ... players drafted 1968-1971 (inclusive). I've also done non-drafted players born pre-1953 but many are major leaguers so I'm sorting through those manually.
215 players ... if you prefer I e-mail these to you let me know. Thanks!

Wow. You have really done your homework. I know many of the guys on your list but I think about 60% are guys that I don't know. Jeff Hooper played Little League and high school ball with me. LHP. Even though he was drafted by the Expos, he never signed with them. He played in the Twins' minor leagues for several years. It seems to me that you have most of the pertinent information on these guys. I will go through the list tomorrow and add what I can. What additional info do you want?

Hi Cliff - anything you can add or any recollection (personalities, character, accomplishments, where di they wind up?) would be great - there's absolutely no rush (I've been at this 4 years to get to this point) ... I'll post the other list (non-drafted, born <1953) tomorrow and I have list of unknown (i.e. last name only) too.
I have some minor league stats going back to 1969 but its pretty much restricted to the players who made it the big leagues so I'm always looking for those. I'm also looking for minor league lines-ups, team schedules, game score etc. ... anything is helpful.
Thanks!!

I made a list of the guys that I actually met during my two year stint. Total of 50 players off your list. I went to West Palm Beach for spring/summer training in June of 1970. Then to Bradenton to play the regular Gulf Coast League season. I was promoted to West Palm Beach in the Florida State League in August. I also played on the Expos' team in the Florida Instructional League that fall/winter. In April 1971, I went to spring training in Homestead, Florida, then back home until June when I reported to Jamestown for spring/summer training. I stayed in Jamestown where I played my final year. It would be much easier for you to interview me on the phone. Is it an inconvenience for you to call me long distance in L.A.?

Are there still any Expos minor league teams that still call themselves the Expos?

So many of the names being tossed about did make it to the Expos, some for longer than others. Barry Foote must have had one of the most thankless jobs in baseball, backing up Gary Carter. Dale Murray performed pretty well for a couple of years, and of course, as far as french Canadian content is concerned, Claude Raymond coming back to Montreal from Atlanta to finish his distinguished career was likely as much as a thrill for him as it was to the hometown fans. Although I was 10 years old on April 14th, 1969, I still remember it like yesterday. Threads like this go to show that, despite vicious rumours to the contrary, baseball needs no defibulators to thrive in Quebec. Thanks for the memories, guys!

Are there still any Expos minor league teams that still call themselves the Expos?
No, at least not in affiliated ball. The last minor league team to be called the 'Expos" were the Vermont Expos. Their last year as the Expos was in 2005. They were affiliated with Montréal from 1994 until the move, and they have been affiliated with the Nationals ever since. Their new name is the Lake Monsters. They play in Winooski, a town on Lake Champlain and near Burlington. They have a 'Tribute to Montréal' night every year, in which they wear vintage Expos uniforms. That date is August 10 of this year and will feature an appearance by former Expos reliever and the one who gave up the Monday homer. You can read more about their history and the 'Tribute to Montréal' on their official website or Encore Baseball Montreal's official website.

Hi Rod. It is Joe Leeder here. I haven't been to the site is a while and noticed your exchange with Cliff Kerr. I played with both of you in different years. Where are you living now? I am living in Toronto and have been heare for a while. I saw Craig Caskey a few years back when he was in town on business. I don't know if you remember Craig. Joe

Joe,
It was great talking to you yesterday. I called Brian Finnerty this morning and asked him about the fight at the College Inn. He remembered very well and said he was going to call San Fillipo. He also has contact info for Bobby Croswell.

You too. Fun catching up. Many nights at the College Inn for food and beers. I tried to flip you an email afterwards but I must have taken down the wrong info. I will try you again. Joe

hey guys, i just joined this site cause i saw this thread - im actually trying to find information on my dad. he graduated high school in '72 or '73 and played baseball for one of the montreal expos minor league teams. His name is David Faubert - if anyone can give me information on what minor league team he was on, if you remember him, or if you know where i could find information PLEASE let me know! I have been looking for a LONGGG time. Also, would the expos minor leagues have baseball cards from the 70s? Id love to find his card. . . thanks for any info you can give me
lmaynard116. I just saw your post. I can't say that I remember your father yet the name does sound familiar. I was in the minor leagues during the time period you mentioned '72 or '73. What position did your father play, was he drafted out of high school or college and what city/state was he from? Perhaps this might jog some memory for me. As for baseball cards, TOPPS took pictures at spring training for minor league players but I don't think they ever used the cards unless you eventually played MLB.
I was bopping around on the internet the other day and decided to "google" the name of a friend of mine who played in the Expos' minor league system in the '70s to see what, if anything, would come up. Along with some other Expos statistics web sites, his name came up here on the list of players from the first page. His name is Mark Cunningham, although I know him as Gabby. We met in 1980.
Mel Didier, who was the Expos' minor league director (I think that was his title) when Gabby was there, left major league baseball for a couple of years. Mel was named the head baseball coach at the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette) and he brought a few guys with him as assistants. Gabby was one of them. I think Mel had caught up with Gabby just before he came down here at Humbolt State University. Gabby was working with a young player that Mel ended drafting for the Indians, Jack Fimple. I met Jack at spring training with the Indians in 1981. As a matter of fact, they moved me to catcher at spring and Jack was nice enough to give me a brand new catcher's mitt. It's the only thing I still have from my playing days.
Gabby stuck around Lafayette for a few years after Mel went back to major league baseball. For those who might remember Gabby, you would know that he is very laid back and his needs are simple. Good thing, too. We lived in an old house just outside of town and, for a while, we didn't have any electricity. We couldn't afford it. We could afford, though, an old shipping box for a table, a checker board, and a bottle of Jack Daniels. It's amazing how those checkers could move around the board by themselves after a while.
When Gabby left Lafayette, he moved up to Shreveport to work with one of the other ex-Expo players. All I can remember is his name is Bob and he works for a milk company. Gabby stayed in Shreveport for a couple of years. When Gabby's father became ill, he moved back to California to be close to him. His father has since passed away. Gabby is still in California. Now he's taking care of his mother.
Gabby has come back to Lafayette a time or two since he's been back in California. Last time was a couple of years ago. I still talk with him every few months.
I'm not certain if anyone will remember Mark/Gabby. He never made it to the major leagues and obviously his is not a household name. I remember him, though. He's my friend...

Since no one has posted here for almost three months I decided I had better keep the thread alive. Mel Didier was the Expos Minor League Director when I was in the system (1970-71). Good man and a great baseball guy. Most of the Expos execs had come from the Atlanta Braves. Gabby must have played after my time as I did not know him.
