The first game was a win, the second will be underway in few hours....here's the thread where talk about Cardinals' games during the season. Tonight it's gonna be Mulder vs Myers, I can't watch the game because tomorrow got to wake up early and the first pitch is schedule at 1.05 am italian time.

Mulder just had to give up that 2 run shot to tie the game. He's on one of my fantasy teams, too.

What's with Izzy walking people? He nearly blew the game and gave the Phillies the win. Or it must be that Molina won't quit moving around...he's as squirmy as a fish out of water. He's still new to the game, I know. But I hope he improves by not being so squirmy behind the plate and being stable for once.

I like that Molina is jumping around behind the plate... it shows an understanding of the game beyond his years.
With a runner on second, the baserunner could easily tip the pitch location to the batter by doing a number of things based on where Molina sets up. i.e. making a subtle fist (leaving his hand at his side, or wherever he has his hand while leading off) with one hand or the other to signify inside, outside, or raise a foot a few inches in the air higher than the other while taking his lead off second base. The ways to very clearly tip pitch location while leading off second are almost limitless. Turn a foot outside or inside..... Open your mouth, close your mouth. Say something ("Come on so and so") or not say something. Touch your helmet with your right hand if it is inside, left hand if it is outside, etc. All of these would be virtually undetectable for the defense to call you out on. This has been going on since, well, since the first runner got to second base in the first game I suppose. :D
With Molina setting up outside, and then jumping back inside at the last possible moment, the tipping of the pitch location gets tougher to pull off.
As long as the pitcher is not bothered by it, I would like him to do it anytime a runner is on second. I would imagine that Molina saw something to make him think the Phillies were trying to tip the pitch location, and he took action. Good for him!!!
On a more alarming note..... what's with Hersheiser calling out Encarnacion's inability to hit a fastball? He kept saying he was having trouble catching up with anything over 91 MPH or so, and he should not be pitched any off speed pitches, etc. Can the guy really not hit a fastball all that well?
Game three starting in about 30 minutes.... Darn you Fox Sports Midwest Blackout!!! (I live closer to Cincy that to STL, so I get blacked out a lot, but will be able to watch "Poker with the Pros" or some other crap on Fox Sports Ohio without any blackout at all!!!!)

I'm sorry Stan, the game is about to begin and I'm ready to cheer for my Cards! Marquis vs Lidle, I printed the scorecard and I'm ready to take note of everything! Mlb.tv is not showing me, at the moment, yesterday's highlights...one of my friends told me Albert got a must see Hr!
StanTheMan

Enjoy the game...
As for Albert's HR.... it was a letter high fastball that Albert hit really, really well. Not a 400 foot home run, but a no doubt home run from the moment it left his bat. A kid (about 10 or 11 years old?) in a Pujols Jersey got the ball, and the cameras showed him grinning from ear to ear when he his hands on Alberts dinger.
Incredibly, when David Bell hit a 2 Run HR for the Phillies to tie the game late in the contest, the KID's DAD (wearing a Cards Cap) caught the HR. So there they are sitting with w HR balls, enjoying the Cardinals!!! There is another Father-Son Duo sitting in the row behind them (in Phillies Caps).... so the Cardinals Dad and Son give the David Bell HR ball to the Young Phillies fan. Cue camera shots of the Philly Dad shaking the hand of the Cards Dad, and camera shots of both kids grinning from ear to ear.
Classy Cardinal Fans!!!! :clapping

Wow! Beatiful! Magic of baseball!
By the way, it's middle of the fifth and we're up 4-2 with a 4 run fifth inning over Lidle. Rbi for Marquis, Pujols, Rolen and Edmonds and all started with an Hbp on Miles and a Bell's error.

Middle of the seventh, 4-2 Cards. Marquis went for 5.1 innings, he left with 2 runners on and 1 out. Rincon and Hancock made 2 quick outs on Howard and Bell. Hancock is pitching now, we're in bottom of 7th

Good job guys, a 3-0 start with impressive bullpen performance today. Flores looked great, Izzy did a perfect 1-2-3 inning for the save while Hancock and Rincon got 2 key out in the sixth inning! We stopped Rollins streak (0 for 4 today for him) and we had another good performance from Miles, this guy is doing very well, I hope he continues!
Marquis wins his first game, not a great start from him but a good one. He also contributed with an Rbi, tomorrow we're in Chicago!

First game with the Cubs, first loss...Maddux did a great job and we were only able to avoid the shutout with a solo shot by Edmonds (great shot). Suppan lasted 5.0 innings with 4 runs (1 unearned, it was Eckstein's error on a difficult play), 8 hit, 2 bb and 2 strikeout. Good news from the Bullpen, Looper was in in for two innings with one hit and Wainwright did a good job in the eight inning recording 3 out and no hits. Today there's a great pitching matchup, Carp vs Zambrano...will be a tough one to win!

Encarnacion looked terrible today. He is not a #2 hitter imo.... and can he possibly throw the ball to second base with less than three hops before it gets there?
I know he is our best option in right, and I do hope he plays 150+ games, but he better achieve more than he is right now!!
Stinking Maddux!!! :grouchy

With today 9-3 win against the Reds, we're 6-5. Very good job by Ponson, he lasted 6.1 innings with 5 hits and 2 runs, 1 BB and 4 SO. Offense was finally productive, Albert hit his 5th homer of the season (a two run shot in the second inning) and there was also a solo shot by Luna and a 2 run shot by Spiezio (as a pinch hitter). Luna drove in 3 runs and Molina 2, Luna did also a good job defensively, playing 2B. Bad day for Rincon, he was on the mound in the 9th but he was replaced after 2 out and an earned run, Looper pitched a scoreless eight. Also in the game Thompson (0.2 innings, he replaced Ponson) and Hancock (he made the last out).
Tomorrow the series finale, 2.15pm ET, will be Mulder vs Arroyo, very interesting matchup.

Bad bad situation, middle of the 8th, down 7-6 thanks to an Encarnacion's error that kept alive the inning. With runners on first and third, 1 out, Aurilia hit a double off Looper (who replaced Flores) and Cinci leads 7-6. Bad, really bad. We were in control, but there was some error by La Russa in my opinion. First he let Wainwright pitch into the eight (he pitched in the 7th and he wasn't so good as last appereance); he also made a switch benching Rodriguez and sending into the field Encarnacion. Rodriguez wasn't playing bad, he committed one error sliding in the grass but he didn't deserve the switch.

When Marquis and Pujols gets on a roll, that's a sign of a healthy Cardinals organization. That's the second memorable walk-off blast that I saw/heard in just eight months.
That's one "Happy Easter" for Albert Pujols! Three eggs shelled in one game.

Hehe, after a tough 12-4 loss, the Cards shut out the Pirates. Carpenter goes 8, and Izzy closes it out. I would have liked to see Carp get the shutout, though. Carpenter also recieved his 1,000 career K today, striking out 6.

Wow, good game today and good win! 2 rbi by Pujols, 1 for Eckstein and the other one for Yadier Molina, 4-1 win with only 4 hits (Cubs had 6 hits). Ponson struggled a little bit, but he was able to give up only 1 run in 5 innings (and he got the W). After Ponson, fantastic job by our bullpen, 4 hitless innings: 1 inning by Wainwright (with 2 SO), 2 by Looper and Izzy closed it (but he committed a bad error on a routine out...fortunately he was able to finish the game with any damage).
Tomorrow it's gonna be Marquis vs Maddux

Let's get ready for the final game of this weekend series against the Cubs. Miles is back on 2B, Encarnacion back to second spot in the batting order. Cubs will have Barrett (yesterday he pinch hitted in the 9th) and Perez in lineup.
Sberl
04-23-2006, 02:35 PM
Great game by Maddux, awful game by Cardinals. 3 defensive errors (2 by Miles) and inability to hit in clutch moments result in a 7-3 loss that was 7-0 in the 7th, when Maddux left the game. The 3 cardinals runs came from the bench, 2 from Bennett (2 for 2 with 2 doubles and 2 Rbi) and one from Luna. Marquis not good, he went six innings giving up 7 hits and 7 runs (I think 2 unearned); errors killed us.
Solair Wright
04-23-2006, 04:30 PM
I think I may have found some problems: Encarnicion isn't producing, Edmonds needs to swing at exact time instead of his "second late pitch," Marquis needs to listen to Duncan because we're not going to win, but his fastball won't fool everyone. (i.e. lefties, switch hitters) It's all about baseball, and all about winning a good portion of our games.
by the way, why is Hal McRae not doing a thing to help us? Defense needs work, offense needs work, and pitching needs a little reworking. Nothing like "OMG WE SUK CUZ WE LOST 89-3," it's all slight errors. :)

I didn't watch Cardinals-Pirates series, I'm glad we won all three games but I'm also concerned about Izzy. One of my friend called me yesterday evening (afternoon in Usa) and told me about Cards' game just after Izzy blew the save. I turned on mlb.tv in time to see Pujols winning hit, no words about him. Another positive thing it's Looper, isn't it?

04-28-2006, 02:14 PM
The Cards beat the Nationals 6-2. Ponson pitched well and gets his 3rd win. Spiezio got a 2B and 3B and 2 big RBI in the 7th. My dad has Cardinal tickets for tonight, but I have my own game and will have to miss out.

04-29-2006, 02:46 PM
Great pitching duel between Carpenter and Hernandez; Cards win 2-1 thanks to a solo shot by Pujols in the 8th off Rauch (he takes the loss). This hr gives him the new record for hr in april (14), great job Albert! In the 9th Izzy made a thrilling save: he made 2 out, he gave 3 consecutive walks and then he made the last out with a 1-3 play which was a thriller one because he nearly missed the throw to Albert! Carpenter pitched 7 strong innings but he didn't get the win, Looper is the winning pitcher (a perfect 8th inning, he's doing very well now).

Yeah, I know. I was at that game, and take a guess who homered again? None other than Juan Encarnicion, and I still think Edmonds is done, despite him getting one base hit and many people left on base. Took three out of four from Washington, and wish a two-game sweep of the Reds tomorrow so we can shut them up. (watch out, Houston is hard)

The Cardinals lose 6-1 against the Reds. Arroyo(sp?) pitched a complete game. Encarnacion hit a homer again, but it was just a solo shot.
Solair Wright
05-01-2006, 09:01 PM
Something has to be done with our hitting coach. Mulder screwed up today, probably was frustrated because he wasn't facing the batters (look at how Carpenter pitches, and look at Mulder). A former 20-game winner needs to look at the batters before the pitch, and what's up with Molina? He gets fidgety when taking behind the plate, and his appalling batting average. Pujols isn't gonna cut it in later games for hits and home runs.
We need to win tomorrow to even the 2-game series in time for Houston.
Gashouse6
05-02-2006, 01:40 PM
The Cards lose 3-2. Ponson was shutting out the Reds, but Dunn and Edwin Encarnacion hit solo shots in the 6th to tie it up. In the bottom of the 9th, the Reds got a walk-off single. Pujols had the day off today.

Because the pitcher was inexperienced (we called him up the other day) and a lot of times, when he threw to Molina, it bounced by the dirt nearby him, and it may not be long until Falkenborg is sent outright to Memphis. We just HAD to send Schumaker down, instead of Molina.

Man, it would've been in extra innings if Izzy, Wainwright or Hancock was pitching. But noo, they had to send in a newbie closer for that day, causing a crushing loss.
The problem is, the pitcher didn't know what he was doing. He hit a batsman while he was bunting, and his pitches were not coming close to either Molina or Phillips. Then a couple pitches, he completely missed Molina's glove. He's the next Jimmy Journell, who didn't last long in the majors last year. Just hope he gets sent outright to where he belongs. They optioned Skip to Memphis to send this sack of trash to the major leagues? GRR...

I read some post-game articles, La Russa said Freel wasn't the ideal hitter for a double play or something like that and he also said that Valentin was in a cold period so he thought Falkenborg can handle him. Another thing, he also said that Wainwright yesterday could not pitch because he pitched two innings on sunday and that he would have used Izzy only with a save chance.
Imho, yesterday's game was a bad game for Tony. Looper, who's pitching great, pitched only 0.2 innings and he came into the game in the seventh, Flores made the last out in the seventh and 2 out in the eight and then came Falkenbourg (who arrived in Cincinnati 90 minutes before the game): why not letting Looper pitching the seventh and the eight or Flores the eight and the ninth? It's a decision I can't understand...
Now a two game series with Astros...we have to win both games

1) Ponson is hurt, the only thin I now is that it's a elbow disconfort
2) Too many defensive errors, tonight two very bad plays in the outfield by Luna and Taguchi.
Good news:
1) Falkenborg looked good

05-08-2006, 08:25 PM
It's because Marquis has no control of the ball. And I think any game he pitches is an automatic L for loss. This will be his fourth loss in a row. It's either rest him next time he gets to start or trade him. And they send out ex-Card Ray King. and I think they're booing at him... (I don't have the TV on at the moment)

Albert hit #19! A solo shot in the second inning, now we're in the 3rd, Marquis is pitching and the score is 5-1 Cardinals (Rbi single Pujols and a three run shot by Rolen in the first, a solo shot by Jackson in the second for Arizona). I don't like the way Marquis is pitching, he pitched a good first inning, but in the second he made some mistakes and now his ball is not going down but remains always high or in the zone.

Guys, we're playing horrible defense. In the sixth an Eckstein's error and a missed double play because Pujols bobbled it, leads to 2 Arizona runs...3-0 the score.
1 of 2 errors that I gave to Albert in the post before, is a Rolen error. So today we have all infielders with an error except Miles.

7-6 loss, thrilling game but for me it's a bad game because of too many defensive errors by both teams. We got the opportunity to tie the game in the 9th, Rodriguez out, Albert nearly hit another one, Edmonds singled but Rolen popped to the shortstop.

It's because of how chilly it is here, only 51F (11C) right now. I was walking my dog and it was cold, so no wonder why the ball didn't get enough carry. If it was warmer, that would've been a home run :grouch. Oh well, can't win every game, and Tuesday is up against my former favorite team, the New York Mets, to wrap up this home stand, then three games to Kansas City for interleague play (oh how much I hate the useless National League must DH rule...).

An 8-6 victory, and Izzy almost blew the save (again). Today's game is the finale before we invite the Giants to our home in September, probables: Cards - Carpenter; Giants - Noah Lowry, the southpaw who had 170 K's last year. Let's show him why strikeouts are important at 2:35 PM CDT (12:35 PM for the hosting team). After this, it's a 3-game trip to PETCO Park. Good luck hitting a home run there Pujols.

My wife and I went to the game against the Phillies on Tuesday night. Given that at 9:45 pm it was 98 degrees in an outdoor stadium, it was probably the worst and most boring game we have ever been to. A defensive gem by Pujols to put off Utley's streak was about the only thing that redeemed the time at all. Suppan was terrible, I think Sosa took what seemed like 5 minutes between each pitch, and like I said 98 degrees made me wish I had stayed home and saved my money. 4.50 for a bottle of water. So they finally won. Now it comes down to questions, relating to the rotation. When Mulder is finished rehabbing, would that mean Reyes gets sent down, then Wainwright starts? I can see him right now throwing a no-no. He's a young Curt Schilling in the making, and his future I can see is very bright. Anthony Reyes should get some time in the minors before the season's over, not because of people jumping on him saying how bad he is, but to give him a couple games so he can look at a better future. In other words, here's the schedule for the rest of August.
August 6: Brewers
August 7-10: at Reds (for a four game series)
August 11-13: at Pirates
August 15-17: vs. Reds
August 18-20: at Chicago-NL for the Lifelong Rivalry
August 22-24: at Shea Stadium or an encore of the 2000 NLCS, and they've stocked up considerably since last year.
August 25-27: vs. Chicago-NL again (on Saturday, avoid McCarver at all costs. Listen to "Moonman" Mike Shannon instead)
August 29-31: vs. Marlins (another team that stocked up considerably since we last met them)

Hear! Hear! It's time to let the young talent flourish and mature into the great ballplayers they will be. For next season, I think the only free agent-to-be pitcher that the Cards should try to re-sign is Suppan. Forget Mulder and Marquis. Ultimately I see the '07 rotation looking like this: Carp, Reyes, Wainwright, Suppan, and Weaver. I don't think the Cards should take up Edmond's option, but I wouldn't mind if they tried to re-sign him at a cheaper price (as the Yanks did with Bernie Williams). While there are very good CF prospects in the minor leagues, I'm not sure any of them are ready to be the full time CF.

"Hal McRae is too old to be a hitting coach, bring George Hendrick here next season."
Age-ism at its best. What does age have to do with how well one coaches hitting? Maybe the Marlins' pitching was really good last night. They've got great young talent on the mound, which is more than the Cardinals can say right now.:(

13-6, Win against the Marlins. After being down 5-1, they came back for a big victory. The offense was ALIVE. Rolen hit 3 doubles to help boost the hitting. Bennett left the game with a sprained back, so Yadier came in to play for him. Marquis didn't have a good start, but lucked out with the run support.

5-2, Win against the Marlins. Even though it was a low scoring game through the 8th, it took forever. Suppan works really slow and was wild. After the Marlins 2nd run in the 8th (2-1), Duncan tied it up with a pinch hit homer. That sparked the offense. Izzy did an okay job out there, but he gave up 3 hits.

I wish wainwright was our closer, lol. But he will not be and never will, next year he will be a starter.
Why do they put izzy in anyway? All the fans boo him and the cardinals should know that he is leading the NL in blown saves. He has no control and no speed to make up for it.

2006 is toast. Astros and Padres are playing like they WANT to be in the post-season. I think the Cards have simply run out of steam and ought to stay home and figure out what went wrong and how to right the ship for 2007. Our bullpen hasn't let up a run in 11 and 2/3 innings or something like that. Johnson is looking nice, Thompson was pitching good before the playoffs, and Wainwright is on fire. And the only thing that mets have against us is their bullpen, but ours isn't that weak right now...
