View Full Version : 1962 Free Agent Auction

leecemark
03-30-2006, 04:47 PM
--Bidding on Premium Free Agents begins at midnight EST tonight. It will conclude at 11PM EST tomorrow night (March 31). The players on the auction block are;
Mickey Mantle
Rocky Colavito
Frank Howard
Jim O'Toole
Zolio Versalles
Luis Aparicio
Jack Kralick
Don McMahan
Ron Hansen
--Minimum bid is 250K and all bids must be in increments divisable by that amount. Maximum bid is whatever you have left in cap room. You may bid on multiple players per post up until the last hour, when bids will be restricted to one player per post.
--At no time can your combined bids exceed your available cap space. If you do exceed your cap space your highest bid will be disallowed (that is the player you bid the most on will be lost). You will also face a 5M cap reduction for 1963. If more than one bid has to be rescinded to get you under the cap, the penalty will be 5M for each.
--A player for whom the winning bid must be disallowed will be offered to the owner who made the second highest bid. If they either no longer have the cap space or interest that player will shift over to the secondary free agent market.
--The secondary market will open at midnight tomorrow after winners in the PFA are announced. It will close at 11PM EST on Monday, April 3. Same rules for bidding apply A list of unsigned players available in that auction is attached.
--Free Agents may, and in some cases must, be offered multi-year deals. Any bid of 8M or more will get a contract of 3 years minimum/5 years maximum length (owners option). Bids between 5-7.75M may be signed to 2 min/4 max deals. Winnings bids below 5M have a min/max contract legnth of 1-3 years.

I should have near 17 million open.....I have yet to add my new guys to my official roster.

It's pretty important that people be here for at least the last 10 minutes of the auctions. I will bid for someone if they want to send me a list of players and maximum bids, but I can't promise that I won't outbid you myself.

Yes. You can go over 40 during the auctions. The only hard limit is the payroll at $100 million.

The schedule for the auctions, and all of the off season activities is in the 1st post of the "1961-62 Offseason Thread".

leecemark
03-31-2006, 06:50 AM
--I'll be happy to make a last bid for anyone who can't be here at the finish, but this is a little different scenario than the draft. I can't promise not to outbid you myself (unless your top bid is over the 14M I have left) nor can I promise that I'll be able to keep bumping on a gradual pace down the wire. The only thing I can promise is that I'll post your limit if someone has over bid you on a player you want before the last 10 minutes.
--I have had some discussions via PM with a few owners about changing the format for the free agent auctions for next season. Sealed bids or one player at a time countdowns (for the PFAs) are both suggestions that have come up. If anyone has an idea for improving the process please bring it up for consideration in the discussion thread. Any changes would be applied next year of course.
--By my count these are current roster/salary figures;
Skipjacks 41/83.25
Gamblers 33/71.50
Hard Cider 39/73.50
Knights 39/84.75
Cannons 40/75.75
Redbirds 39/81.25
Quakers 37/77.5
Diablos 32/60.75
Legends 32/63.25
--I won't swear to the accuracy of these figures. Everyone should be tracking their own team and if I've given too low a figure here and you go over the cap these numbers won't protect you from penalties.

--Scott and Lew, I just sent you the updated 1962 file. Scott we differ by 1 player on your roster so look it over and let me know who I may have missed (I've got 39 and you said it should be 40).
--Let me take this opportunity to again suggest that anyone in this for the long haul would be well served to purchase the game for themselves. It would be a one time cost as I'll be buying each new season and can export the league file to you. You'll be able to view all the available reports directly and organize in to your preferences and also be able to directly access and edit your team. You'll also be able to view box scores and other info that I am not able to export as attachments. I'll never make buying the game a requirement for ownership, but IMO its money well spent.

Mantle - Cannons 18.5M! - never expected to see him (or anyone) go so high
Howard - Quakers 16.5M - actually even more surprising
Colavito - Gamblers 13.25M
O'Toole - Gamblers 6.25M - best bargin of all the signing IMO
Versalles - Redbirds 6.25
McMahan - Skipjacks 5.0 - would have looked alot better at .25 less and a one year deal
Hansen - Cannons 3.0
Aparicio - Cannons 2.0 - trying to corner the market on SS Chris?
Kralick - Legends 2.5M

Mantle, Howard and Colavito are due contracts of 3-5 years
O'Toole, Versalles and McMahan are up for 2-4 years/
Hansen, Aparicio and Kralick get 1-3 years.

--Mantle has an awesome year in 62 and I would have gladly spent all my cap money to have him. He will be tying up a huge chunk of cap space for a part timer in 63 though. He won't exactly be a bargin in 64 either.
--Howard went for more than I was willing to pay, but he does provide a big bat in the next two years before slumping in 1964. He bounces back some for 65-6, but I doubt this is a 5 year deal. Of course, I never imagined he would go for 16.5M either.
--Colavito looks pretty similar to Howard over the next few years and signed for 3M less so this looks like a solid deal given the market.
--O'Toole is a pretty good starter for 62-63 and a very good one in 64. Best bargin of the auction.
--Versalles is another pretty good deal. Pretty good SS for next 4-5 years with an MVP season in 65 as a bonus.
--McMahan is awesome in 1962, but slumps bad in 63. He does have some additional good years that could justify a longer deal. I would have liked him at up to 4.75 where they would have been a 1 year option. Not a bad deal at 5M though.
--Hansen is useless in 62, but if his glove bounces back to VG/EX could start for somebody in 63 and has a very nice year in 64.
--Aparicio is a dependable glove, but I'd have a hard time putting his bat in my lineup.
--Kralick is a solid pitcher this year and a pretty good one next year. Surprised he went so low. I expected pitching to be at a premium since little is available in the secondary market, but Kralick was almost as good a bargin as O'Toole.

The Redbirds get the guy they truly wanted in Versalles....signed to the max(I think) 4 year deal.

To make room, I'll release Earl Averill Jr. and his 1M salary.

P.S. thanks for helping out with the auction Mac!

So that we can at least do something in the second free agent auction, the Cannons will be releasing shortstop Roy McMillan and his 1.25 salary as well as Wally Moon and his 1.25 salary. This now brings our payroll to 96.75.

Also, we sign Mantle for five years, Hansen for four, and Aparicio for three.

Actually, I think I did very well with Kralick, even as well as the O'Toole signing, if you take salary into consideration. O'Toole has a bit better ERA+ over the next three years (115,116,136 to 106, 120. 112 for Kralick), and he has more IP (252,234,220 to 243,223,191 for Kralick), but his salary is 2.5X that of Kralick, too. I was very pleased to get Kralick for the amount I spent.:) Really too bad they are both lefties, though, with the abysmal results lefthanders seem to have in DM.:p

Mark, where do you want the contract lengths posted?

I'll put it here, but if you want it elsewhere (in the roster thread, certainly) I'll put it there, too.

Legends sign Jack Kralick to a 3 year contract for 2.5M per year.

leecemark

--Scott, you are correct - 4 years is the max for a player in Zolio's price bracket. He was worth 5M even if nobody else was bidding just so you could go 5 years and lock him up through his MVP year. He, O'Toole and Krakick were the 3 guys (well Aparicio wasn't bad except he seems redundant on the Cannons roster) who got salaries I would have been willing to pay if they filled a need for me.
--I wanted one of the 3 slugging outfielders, but those bids went through the roof. I was willing to spend what I had on Mantle, but he went more than 4M higher than my cap (or that I would have gone even if I had the money), Howard and Colavito I a 12M limit on for myself. Rocky that came close on, but Hondo broke the bank.

leecemark

--Chris those releases are required to get down to 40 for Opening day, but they do NOT give you any cap relief. Anybody released after the close of the non-tender period remains on your payroll for the season. You need to list those guys on your roster page as dead contracts.

I clearly stated it was a quick and unoffical one and would not protect you from cap violation penalties. You should have used your own higher count or better yet doubled checked and got back to me on the discrepancy.
--The Cannons Mantle bid is voided. The rules make the first option in this case is the next highest bidder gets first option to sign a player in this circumstance. That would be the Legends at 18M. Lew do you want Mantle at that price?
--Chris, your cap space for 1963 is hereby reduced to 95M. You do have your full 100M (you are currently at 84.50) to participate in the secondary auction. If you want to revoke your release of McMillan and Moon I'll allow that, although I can't see why you'd want either of them.

It's my fault I guess for not checking. Should have checked. I'd just like to ask that if we're going to make a post stating our cap space at the beginning of an auction, please try to make it accurate from now on, okay? My count was done on my own without really checking over and I figured mine must be wrong, but I'm not going to complain. My fault. I might be getting Mantle back anyway.:)
