This is a thread devoted to MLB 06: The Show for the PS2. I love the game and would like to hear other's comments, reviews, expiriences, and more. I would also like to see if anyone has any hints to rack up big reward points.

In career mode, I created a closer named Game Over with a hard 4-seamer, slider, and a curveball. He did great the first few months of the season with the Blue Jay's farm system getting 23 saves, 5 wins, and a .77 ERA; all as a closer. He was then traded to the White Sox and they had him as an MLB starting pitcher. I didn't build up his endurance enough, so he could only pitch about 4 good innings then lost it. I think Over had an 0-3 record, 5.89 ERA, and a 2.10 WH/IP. Luckily for me, I didn't save after the trade, so I'm back with the Jays.

I started a career with a 2b/ss about 10 minutes ago and I'm on my second season and I had 19 homers in April in AAA:eek:  !!!!! The funny thing is his power vrs. lefty is 40 and vrs. righty is 66

I made a 2nd baseman and in his 2nd year he hit over 40 homers 160 something rbis while batting over .500 in the majors. Not really realistic. The game is annoying because its hard to stay at the HOF level and it suddenley goes down real quick for no reason, so its basicley immposible to get in the HOF. Good game though.

Yea, it's the all-star break now!!! I have a .330 average 203 hits 28 homers 77 rbis. I expext him to go 50/135/.320 with 300 hits or something, next season I will demand a call-up if not called up a trade.

I ask for a call up once the 60 day lock on that option is up right at the start of the career. It doesnt really matter what the stats are (unless there horrible) As long as you have good attributes. It usaully works. Then if you can produce you will stay up there. So dont wait to be called up.

Too late season's over. During this offseason I'll try to get called up.

They sent Bobby Jenks down after a season with 50 saves 61 k's and a 1.15 era!!!!!! PATHETIC!!!!! And he haven't played any majors this season either.

I just started a career with the 2nd basemen, Born Toplayball. It's amazing how fast they evolve from being minor league 8-spot hitters to being major league All-Stars.

I too, am greatly enjoying this game. I had been buying the MVP Series, but want the authentic players, license etc... and am not interested in College Ball.

The rendering of the Cardinals new ballpark is terrific. My son and I play games there quite a bit. When pitching, if you just stand there, without throwing a pitch, after about 10 seconds, the game will pan a camera with close ups from infielder to infielder, and eventually pan an outfield camera, or maybe an upperdeck camera from one part of the stadium to another. A great way to look at any of the ballparks.

I also enjoy the old time parks. Both the Polo Grounds and Sportsmans Park are done very well. My son, who is 9, is convinced he can hit a HR to centerfield at the Polo Grounds, but has yet to pull it off, even in Home Run Derby. I tried to tell him that only three players in the history of the PG hit a Home Run to Center Field during a big league game (one Negro League Player did it as well), but he is slugging away nonetheless.

The pitching is fantastic. As pitchers tire, they do lose a bit of control, depending on the pitcher. When I am absolutely dealing with Carpenter, for example, I nail the black with his terrific slider or two seamer for the first 5 or 6 innings. When in the 8th/9th, and going for complete games, it is much more likely he will miss his spot, and leave a pitch out over the middle, or leave a pitch off the plate for a ball. The same applies to say, Sidney Ponson, is about the 5th or 6th inning. There is a nice dilemma late in games between going for the perfect K pitch on the black, or perhaps trying to get a little more of the plate, but risking throwing a pitch that is easier to hit.

I find the infield play to be very slick.... but I hit into a TON of double plays.

I earned about 300 profile "points" by picking the Yankees, and Simming a whole season (not franchise, or career, but season). Took about 5 minutes or so. A good way to buy some of the Cooperstown Legends and other things. You could do one season easy, spend your $$$, do another, etc.

A few things do bug me about the game.

No Stan Musial. There are TONS of legends in the game, but no Stan The Man?? Incredible.

You cannot use a created player or Cooperstown Legend in Home Run Derby. This is the main flaw with the game, IMO, but I have a son who is big on Ruth, Gherig and those guys, but cannot use them other than in a game, with the rosters altered. A bit beyond his reach right now, but when we play together he is the Cardinals, with a batting order of Ozzie Smith, Jackie Robinson, Pujols, Ruth, Foxx, Gherig, Rolen, Edmonds, and his pitcher. Tough to beat!! :grouchy

When an outfielder is charging a base hit, you cannot field the ball very well while running towards the ball, and the infield. I have had many balls roll right by me, all the way to the wall, for triples, when I was charging it to try to throw a runner out a home when trying to score from second on a single. You have to slow your outfielder at the last second to cleanly catch the ball....

I wish they had Ebbets Field.

When I hit a deep fly ball, the computer outfielders basically JOG to the ball when it is going to be an out. It looks like they might not get there, but always catch the ball on the run, or rather, on the job. This makes it too easy to know when to tag up from first or second, and I find I tag up and take a base that way more than what should be happening.

Great, Great game. Much better than MVP IMO. While hitting HR's completely out of Fenway Park, to DEAD CENTER, is fun, this game is more realistic, IMO.

I don't like that there's no Stan. There also isn't a Mr. Cub. Is Mickey Mantle even in there? I don't really like their Legends selection, but it's still a great game.

StanTheMan
03-25-2006, 01:53 PM
Yeah, no Mantle.... silly. I guess I do kind of enjoy the large selection of legends, but they definitely missed some.

I did hear one thing that was absolutely hilarious today, while playing the game. My boy and I are playing at the Polo Grounds, he with his ridiculous team mentioned above. And I stepped away to take a phone call. The game goes into it's panoramic camera shots of the PG, and the PA announcers comes on....

"Just a reminder to those fans sitting behind home plate today.... If you are talking on your cell phone and caught on camera waving to the people you are talking to, you will be arrested and subject to imprisonment for a minimum of 20 years. Thank You."

Absolutely hilarious... I hate when people do that at games.

Another bit of comedy in the game..... At Shea Stadium, there are advertising signs just to the side of either foul pole for "Hurtz Donuts." Surprisingly, my son did not know what a Hurtz Donut was.... he now has one bruise, and the knowledge to improve his playground pranks, old school style.

I play as my Phillies, and my bullpen stinks

I saw the sign when David Wright nailed a 3 run 9th inning GW HR OFF that sign

At 1st I didn't recall it, then I sounded it out loud...and just said "Yep it did" lol

I am near the All Star Break in Franchise right now, behind the Mets by 4.5 games, Was is in second (What?) and the Braves are in last...I can't believe that one

I think the game will have a few funny PA announcements at just about any park.... you should just let your pitcher stand there a bit a few times here and there. The parks really do look fantastic. Definitely not like Baseball Stars on the Old NES.

I am about 15-10, tied for first in the Central (playing as the Cardinals). The Brewers are hanging in there with me. Realistically, the Cubs are crap. Houston is struggling as well.

I am playing "season" not franchise... as I usually don't want to deal with the ticket prices, and whether or not to have a bobblehead night on a Tuesday game against the Marlins, or have to answer questions about a blister on a AA pitchers finger.

I am finding it RIDICULOUSLY easy to hit with Albert Pujols. He has a hit in every game, and leads the league in homers and RBI. Hitting about .600 or so. I know the guy is a freak, but is anyone else just crushing the ball with their superstar???? The thing is, Rolen is about .295, Edmonds is about .270, Eckstein is off to a hot start at about .340 after 15 games. Most other guys are pretty realistic at this time, so I guess Albert is just hot. I have not messed with the sliders very much, except I increased my slider for Power. After about 10 games, Pujols had 6 HR's but Edmonds had 1, Eckstein had one, LOL, and that was it. It's starting to be more realistic now.....

Ok, Gameplay question.

Do you use the guess pitch feature? Do you guess the pitch, or guess the location? Both?

I will guess both, but only on a 3-0, or 3-1 count. I swing only slightly less than Vlad Guererro does in real life... so I don't work the count too much. I generally guess location until I get two strikes, but sometimes will guess the pitch type instead. About a 75% 25% split there.

I am finding it VERY tough to steal bases.... even when I get a bigger lead than normal. But 20 steals in a season is a big deal nowadays, so I guess I should just run less.

Another EXTREMELY annoying feature.... my guys get so fatigued, so easily that they are asking for days off every other day it seems like.... I hate that. I have been playing most of them anyway.... and had a 4 for 6, 5 RBI game with Juan Encarnacion when, according to the bench coach "he was extremely sluggish in the batting cage today and needs a day off." LOL

One other thought... imapotato........play a game, or a Home Run Derby at Shibe Park in Philly.... You will be launching the ball into the upper deck in left field with ease.... AROD even got one over the roof and out of the Stadium completely. About 460 feet.

In the Rookie level, you just guess the pitch by hitting R2. In the higher levels, you need to guess the location and pitch.

I also played last years. The graphics are a little better, but the batting stances are the exact same. The stadium graphics are better. There is an added mini game, King f the Diamond, that is a lot of fun. There are some other added options that make the game a lot better than the previous year.

Why would the computer take out their starting pitcher in the fourth inning, up 5-1, just to get a righty-righty matchup with 2 on and 2 out?

Stamina? Was he starting on less than 5 days rest? Low confidence? Low ENG (energy) bar?

You were definitely not playing the Cubs, and Dumbas Dusty Baker leaves his guys in until their arms fall off!! :D

It was Cliff Lee of the Indians. I don't think he was any tireder than he should have been normally.

It's also kind of hard to get the hang of throwing sliders or splitters in the dirt with 2 strikes. No matter who the catchern is he always has a really hard time with those.

Ok, I unlocked some of the Cooperstown Legends...How do you actually get to play as these guys? I also unlocked the Polo Grounds and promptly set up a HR Derby there :D Having 450-460 foot pop flies to CF and the Power alleys is funny. If there would have been some relievers warming up in the pens, I would have nailed a couple. Mark Teixera wound up winning my first HR Derby there, but Griffey hit the longest HR at 436 feet to Right-Center. Like Stan's son, I am now on a mission to hit one out of CF there. I am enjoying this years version a lot better then last year's so far. I just need to figure out how to use my unlocked Legends.

StanTheMan
04-05-2006, 03:02 PM
To use the legends.....

First load your profile. (the same one you bought the legends with in the first place)

Then go to the Rosters, and choose "Player Movement" I think. If your profile is loaded, then you will see the legends in the "Free Agent" pool.

Add the Legends to your team(s) as you wish. You will have to drop players, as your MLB rosters are "full." You can save these rosters (and add more legends to them as you go) as a separate set of rosters than your normal rosters if you wish. Mine is on our second memory card so they don't get deleted or altered, and they do not affect my Cardinals Season in any way. I only load them when I need them.

Good luck at the Polo Grounds..... freaky place. We still have not hit a HR to CF or to the Power alleys there. One homer cleared the Bullpen roof in left and snuck into the front row (450-460 I think) and is the longest HR we have hit at any stadium in any mode of play. A few balls have been hit to the Warning Track in Center or just to the side of center, and one hopped the wall.

My son and I play a new game... he has christened it a "Home Run Derby Game." We use our Legends Rosters, in which every player is a legend except for Pujols, Rolen and I think Edmonds for him, and A-Rod, Giambi and that's it for the Yanks. For the love of Nuke Laloosh's, I play with the Yankees!!! :( Legends pitchers too.

We play on HOF difficulty, which allows one to guess the pitch, AND guess one of the 9 locations. i.e. up and in, up and over the middle, up and away, etc.

Then the pitcher MUST throw a high, four seam fastball. The batter gets a "boost" to his ability by guessing not on the pitch, but also one of the 9 locations. The Babe going after a 101 MPH High Heater from the Ryan Express...... HR's everywhere!!!! But, alas, none to Center at the PG -- YET!! The game finished 24-21 the first time we played, adn we each got about 200-300 "points" to get more legends. It is more fun than you think it might be. If you swing even the slightest bit early or late, you get foul balls, or weaker hits... Remember, this is HOF difficulty. Some grounders even from time to time. When you hit a ball right at an outfielder, you do get outs. We also play the outfield "deep" and can run down most of the 450 outs to center and to the power alleys.

We did the same thing at Shibe Park, and were launching balls out of the park with every other swing.

I am convinced that we will NOT get one out to center playing HR Derby. Heck, even in REAL Major League games at the PG, in more than 50 years, only three men hit balls into the Center Field Bleachers at the Polo Grounds. Joe Adcock was the only one for about 30 years, and then Lou Brock and Hank Aaron did it on CONSECUTIVE days in June of 1962. One Negro League Player did it as well.

Have fun with your Legends... shame you can't use them in HR Derby, but the HR Derby "Game" solved that for my boy.

Not me

Pat Burrell is hitting .300 but only has 17 Hrs
Utley and Howard have about 30 near the end of my season

I use these sliders for both the CPu and myself...and sometimes I have 15-10, 13-2, 2-0 ballgames

Pitcher cam-Outfield
Batting cam-wide
strike zone-off
hot zones-off

contact-3
power-13
base running aggressiveness-15
errors-18
pitch count-17
arm strength-14
arm accuracy-3

I'm curious about your sliders.... I have bars which I can slide left and right (PS2) and really do not have any "numbers" to quantify like you list above.....

Am I missing something....?

Power 13.... is that way up?? I have two guys crushing the ball (Pujols with 17 in about 35 games and Edmonds with 13 in 34 games) but nobody else with more than 4 or so.... Weird. Rolen should have more than the 2 or 3 he has right now, I think. I think I have the sliders right based on most of my hitters, but Albert and Edmonds are #1 and #3 in the NL in Homers. Not out of the question, I suppose. If you can't tell, I'm looking for realism.

By turning the Hot Zone "off" does this mean that your players don't have them anymore (and neither does the computer) or just that you cannot see them when playing?? I suppose this would make pitching from the outfield cam (or any cam really) a bit tougher... I'll have to try that. I liked the outfield cam the one time I used it, but found I was able to spot the black of the plate just as well as I could using the default Catcher Cam, and having the Hot Zones up there may force me to hit the batters "blue" zones a bit more than I should. Again, the quest for realism...... I suppose the pitchers would know a players scouting report, and then would know where the Red and Blue zones would be on most batters, so I usually leave it on. I think I like your idea of taking it off, and will try that in the next series I play.

Arm strength is up for me (See, Eckstein, David)
I have the computer baserunning agressiveness up about two clicks
Their contact up two clicks
Their Power up one click. I have given up the fewest runs in the League, and am looking to even the score a bit.

My contact and power have ranged from up two or three clicks, and now back to default (power may be up one click, can't remember) but my games seem about right. One day I plate 10, the next just 3 or 4.....
I have injuries off... (played a season on MVP two years ago and lost Pujols for the season in game # 2 and don't want to deal with that again...)

I'm 23-12 and in second, 1/2 game back of Milwaukee, and leading the Wildcard race.

Damm, this game is fun...

**Pujols 33 game hitting streak came to an end today.... 0-4 with 3 K's  I faced Kim of the Rockies, and I HATE sidearm pitchers!!

The following codes work on the PS2 version of the game (I tried them today...)

Enter them at the main menu..... you will feel the controller "vibrate" if entered correctly.

All Stadiums Available -- Down, Up, Left, Right, Up, Right, Up, Down
(Sportsmans Park, Polo Grounds, Griffith Stadium, Shibe Park, Crosley Field, Forbes Field) The Polo Grounds is a GREAT place to play!!!

ALL LEGENDS AVAILABLE!!! -- Left, Up, Left, Right, Down, Right, Left, Up

All Teams Available -- Left, Right, Right, Down, Down, Left, Up, Up

All Uniforms Available -- Up, Down, Right, Left, Down, Right, Down, Up

I'm not sure what the "all teams" code does.....
The all Uniforms code unlocks the old time unis (the same ones your teams wear randomly (On Sunday it seems) when playing a season)
All Legends is just that.... The all become Free Agents ready for assignment!
All Stadiums is pretty straighforward.

I am generally not a code guy... but I am finding it terribly difficult to earn points in this game. After about 30 season games, I have achieved most of the individual game accomplishments (except for the ridiculous ones, such as 7 steals by a team in a game, or 3 doubles in a game by one player, or 3 HR's, or 20 K's, there is even a 25 K's in a game LOL.). It is a shame none of these goals are "repeatable," meaning you earn X points each time you accomplish any of them. From what i can tell, they are all a one time deal.

The Legends Code is really the one that I want to use.... but do I take the time to assign all 80 or so legends to their proper teams, and at there proper positions? Set all four batting orders? All the rotations? Create StanTheMan, The Mick, and Hammering Hank Aaron? I think I will, especially for when my son and I play Our Home Run Derby Games.....

With guess pitch, strike zone and hot zones OFF, you will find it hard to stay atop the league leader in HRS in Hall of Fame Mode

Also I forgot to mention...I use Classic Pitching, not the meter in Pitching mode

You will def. see the difference between Carpenter and Brad Thompson for example in trying to hit your spots...but since you said you hated losing Pujos...you may not like gicing up 8 runs in an inning that sometimes happens when your P is having an 'off' day, which happens with classic pitching

and the clicks are from the left...so start zero'd out and click to the right

The wide cam on batting makes it harder to pick up the ball IMO, so with contact on 3...if you hit over the ball...a chopper, under the ball, a popup

I had Walter Johnson strike out 25 with a perfect game :)
Stole 7 bases with Ty Cobb
4 triples by Honus Wagner
4 doubles by Lou Gehrig

I brought the "Ryan Express" back home to the Mets along with "The Big Train" between them and Pedro, I am happy ;) I also added Jackie Robinson and Ty Cobb to the team. I have a feeling this is going to be the year for the Mets :gt in my first season with them now. I should lead the league in steals at any rate.

I have a 2b going in career mode, hitting the cover off the ball in the minors, gotta wait about 25 more days to ask for a call up though. Wishing there was a way to do HR Derby with the legends at the Polo Grounds, that would really put this game over the top.

Yeah, the CPU pitching changes make no sense. The starter usually gets yanked for no reason in the second, though he might make it to the fourth if he's really throwing well.

Woo-hoo!!! I made up to the Bigs. I was doing really good the first month or 2 on AAA. I then promptly dislocated my shoulder and went out on the 60 Day DL. I returned and played about a week and a half and requested a call up. To my surprise, the club brought me up. I am playing behind Biggio atm, the first few games I didn't even see any action. I was just thinking that I should play the games and give Biggio The Golden Sombrero a few games in a row to help me out :D They finally gave him a rest day though and I got my big chance. Collected my first hit while going 3 for 4. I got in a day or 2 later and saw that I was playing at ss. Looks like for right now that I am the old middle infielder bacck up dude. Hopefully Biggio will get hurt or retire soon.

I made mine a SP, right now in AA I am 1-3 with a 2.58 ERA. My team gives me no run support :( I am basically adding to stats after every couple of games. I don't bat for the team. I sim to my starts, and then sim through the 1/2 innings my team is batting. Hopefully after a year in AA, I should have my stats up enough to move up next season.

Things that I don't like:

-You can't argue a bad call by the umpire (it seems the only way is that the computer picks and chooses all by it's own).

-David Ortiz is leading the Majors with 34 hrs' and 98 rbi's and I am one game away from the All star game! Geez... Some of the stats are non realistic.

-There are no bench clearing brawls.

-Still haven't figured out on how to drag bunt yet.

I just had a quick question. I am currently playing a season as the Yanks and I have loaded my profile before starting the season. Everytime I save the season, it saves my profile. I had 0 points after spending them for a few legends. I then played a game of my season. I romped Tampa Bay like 7-0, Giambi his a GrandSlam and Randy Johnson pitched a 3 hit shutout. After finishing the game, saving and exiting, I figured I would have like 100 points to spend. To my suprise, I had only 15. I guess my question is where are my points? I checked to see which challenges I had met already. Are the ones that are checked off ones that I can't get points for by completing again? How to I earn the points? It seems as tho I play great games and don't get any points. Is anyone else having this problem? Let me know. Needless to say, I am very frustrated. Thanks guys...
Loving the game. Also here is a funny little story that may amuse you guys. I had 2k6 reserved for a while. It was supposed to be released on my birthday (March 14th) so traded in my copy of MVP 2005 figuring I would have 2k6 by then. They then pushed the release date back and I said screw it and picked up The Show after reading several great reviews. After playin MLb the Show, I loved it and couldn't wait for 2K6 to come out, figuring it would be even better. Boy was I wrong. I traded in MLB the Show and went to pick up 2k6 when it came it. I played it for an hour and thought it was the worst baseball game I had ever played. I wound up trading that it and paying like 10 dollars more to get my exact copy of MLB the show the next day. I hate taking hits like that, but it was worth it to get rid of such a crappy game. Anyone else do something similar or am I the only one?

No I rented 2k5 last year, loved the announcing of Morgan and the other guy, but the gameplay and graphics were atrocious

As for points...ya have to kinda cheat

Choose the legends you have...put them on one team, play a 2 player exhibition...pitch a perfect game and hit the offensive criteria with your legend team

Then you have to do Franchise and career for the other goals...which are HARD

I finnaly made a successfull Pitcher. He won the Cy young award, era title, most wins, and most Ks. Also he is only 24. The best way to really the best sucess is just play every start. I almost got a no hitter but it went between the legs of my first baseman and they said it was a hit in the bottom of the 9th with two outs  The annoying thing about career mode is that you can be wicked good, beat a bunch of records and then it goes down to rookie. And on the retirment plaque it says this rookie never made it to the majors. Even though they have more than 700 home runs and 3000 hits. Argh. Oh well game is still good.

A St. Louisan crowing about a perfect game pitched with a CUB!!!! Sacrelidge!!! An abomination!!! Zambrono MUST be on Steroids!!!! Get yourself an Imo's Pizza immediately, and then go to Ted Drewes, then get a Gus's Pretzel from down by the Brewery, Drink an AB product of your choice, Eat an Amaghetti's Sandwich from the Hill, sit under the arch and think about the Cards 9 World Series wins since the Cubs last won even one. Video game or not, you need help, Gashouse. Come back to the good side of the Force!!! ;) You had BETTER NOT put Zambrano on the Cardinals :evil

I had a No Hitter with Carpenter into the 8th... but ended up with a 2 hit shutout. He's got 4 or 5 complete games in 7 or 8 starts. His slider an two seamer are UNHITTABLE when spotted correctly. But he got hit pretty hard by Colorado of all people last time out, with recently adjusted sliders to make it tougher on me (I'm getting better)

As for the "crazy" stats one poster mentioned.... simply adjust the sliders in the Options Menu (Gameplay Options I think) and if you are hitting too many homers, adjust it down. Too many hits, adjust contact down. If the Computer does not seem to hit well (I guess I have learned to pitch properly) then adjust their sliders up, as I did. If Eckstein is your shortstop (like me) then adjust Arm Strength up so he can actually throw someone out on a ground ball.... seriously!! His nickname is "just enough" for a reason!!

Imapotato listed his sliders a few pages back, but I think he can really play this game.... I'm not quite there yet!!

As you get better at the game, you will have to adjust the sliders. After about 35 games in to my season, my sliders are down a few clicks, (making it tougher for me to hit and easier for their pitcher) and the computers sliders are up a few clicks (making it easier for them to hit, tougher for me to pitch), my games are very realistic.

As for POINTS... I too do not get many points game after game... unfortunately, the tasks (3 hits in a game, 2 HR's etc) do not seem to be "repeatable tasks" which is the OTHER flaw in this game (#1 being no legends or created players in HR Derby). The fact that starters need a day off what seems like every third game is annoying as well, but I just play through most of it and do fine... not an official flaw I guess.

Now lets get some points.

You can create a separate season, choose your profile and the Yankees, Cards, White Sox or other good team, and Sim the whole season up to the playoffs. You will get about 250 points if you do that. Spend away and repeat ad nauseam. Takes about 10 minutes to Sim a Season iirc. Turn off injuries, trades, and anything else that will interrupt the simming so you can go from game 1 to game 162. How I got 250+ with non "repeatable" tasks but I am stuck on 25 points game after game I don't know, but I did.

Hey all,

With the "all legends code" I am thinking of assigning every legend to the appropriate team and having at it.... but there are defintely some missing legends.

Hank Aaron
Willie Mays
Stan Musial
Mickey Mantle
Joe Dimaggio
Sandy Koufax
Carl Hubbel (might be on there, not sure)

Who else?

Is there a limit as to how many players you can create? I play "season" mode, not career, so I will just create a few more legends, and then assign them to the right team along with all the others. I will have to fix each roster and batting order and rotation, but when complete, it will be fantastic.

Finally no more Juan Encarnacion in right field for the Cards.... can't stand that guy!!

How about

Lou Brock LF
Rogers Hornsby 2B
Albert Pujols 1B
Stan Musial RF/CF
Scott Rolen 3B
Enos Slaughter/Jim Edmonds RF/CF
Ozzie Smith SS
Yadi Molina C

Bob Gibson
Dizzy Dean
Chris Carpenter
Mark Mulder

You can turn off these animations in one of the options menus.... I can't remember the exact name of the option, something like Replays, or TV Replays, something like that.

IIRC, you can choose Many, Normal, or None/off. If you have them off, you will get no derisive fingerpointing when you whiff on HR Derby. But you also get no majestic "bows" when you go really deep either.

On another note...... why are you whiffing? :D

Disclaimer -- I do whiff on HR Derby at the Polo Grounds, where you absolutely MUST pull the ball, and you risk swinging too early when you do this.

My son hit 32 Homers with David Ortiz at Crosley Field the other day. We play with 10 outs per round and are on a quest to play with the same four batters at every park on the game. 32!!!! It was absolutely ridiculous. Our previous record was 15 with Adam Dunn at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis. I must say this 32 is equivalent to Cy Young's 511. It will never be broken, (at least not in my household). He's only 10 and was laughing so hard as he hit 24, 25, 26, 27, etc. that I don't know how he was even making contact at the end. We have a blast playing this game together.

I'd love to hear your batting tips....

I am finally NOT swinging at Absolutely everything, and taking more pitches. My Season (about 40 games) strikeout to walk ratios are appalling, but oh well.

I try to treat the first pitch, like a 3-0 pitch. I always choose a pitch and a location, and if I am wrong on the location (you don't see the little red bulls eye thingy) then I look STRICTLY the opposite of what I chose, and take absolutely anything that isn't a meaty pitch in exactly that location. If it's on the black (even in my zone) I take it as well. If it is ball one, then I do the same thing on the second pitch. I can't tell you how many times I've crushed a 2-0 pitch after doing this.

I still don't walk much, but I am hitting better.

Cards in first place, about 30-17, with Pujols denting scoreboards around the majors. I'm actually about even with his pace of 20 homers in about 45 real life games or so.

Great game,
Bryan in Indy

BTW, I am on Veteran Mode, but my contact and Power sliders are down three or four clicks, and the computers are up three or four clicks.

I also pitch WITHOUT the stirke zone and hot zones visible (suggested by a poster a page back or so) and it is MUCH MUCH tougher to pitch.

Is this happening with anybody else . . . the AI has NO idea how real baseball pitching staffs work. I've had opponents start the same pitcher 2 games in a row, burn their closer for one hitter in the 6th (and intentionally walk him!), use up their bullpen and bring in a starter in the late innings . . . who then starts the next game.

The most common time to remove a starter - who's throwing a good game mind you, with the lead or tied at a low score - is after 4 1/3. One out in the fifth, they're going to the pen. In a recent game the opposing pitcher had a 2-0 lead, and been perfect the first time through my order. I got a hit to lead off the fourth, and whoops! He's losing it. Better get him out of there!

It's a good game but this aspect of it is EXTREMELY frustrating (as you can tell :p ).

StanTheMan
05-31-2006, 06:00 PM
I've had the AI pull the starter after 4 or 5 innings, (maybe less once or twice) but only after I had hit him pretty hard. 5, 6 runs or more. I have never had the AI use a closer in anything other than a save situation, or in the 9th in a tie game.... I've found the AI uses the bullpen pretty well.

Well then something is screwed up with my copy. I'm playing a series against the Pirates and Ian Snell started the first two games. I know why: when a pitcher is "cold," it recommends you start someone from the bullpen. I always ignore it, but the AI always follows it. I guess they had two cold starters in a row and the default spot starter is Ian Snell.

Btw I have the PS2 version.

Yeah the bullpen does that to me. Today, Verlander was throwing a shutout against my Indians, and I hit him once in the top of the 6th with two outs. They end up pulling Verlander, and the relief pitcher walks two consective batters. Sizemore ended up hitting a 3 run homerun for me. I won the game 3-2.......lol. I also notice that the game will freeze up on me a few times when I go to the pen, but besides that a excellent game.

Well, I got dealt to the Cubs at the deadline, and I pulled a Brad Lidge in the AAA playoffs. In Game Four of the best-of-five first round, with my team leading the series 2-1, I came into a 5-1 game with runners on first and second and two outs in the ninth inning. The first batter singled to right to score one run and put runners on first and third. Then I threw a wild pitch to score one run and put a runner on second with two down. The next guy doubled, so now the score is 5-4, and there's a guy on second with two outs. The next guy homers, and I lose 6-5. In the next game, I come in in a 3-2 game in the bottom of the ninth and promptly allow three consecutive doubles to lose the series for the Iowa Cubs.

After the season, I was released and signed a 2-year, 82K deal with the Reds. In spring training, I was 0-2 with a 4.56 ERA, 4 saves, and 2 blown saves. So far it's May, and I'm in AAA Louisville with a 5.85 ERA, 11 saves, and 6 blown saves.

It has been a long time since I put my codes in (only the All Teams available Code is bogus - the others work) but you do have to do them from the Main Menu. I can't remember, but maybe you should try to put the codes in FIRST, then go to your created profile, and save.

You are then immediately required to play a game, or a HR Derby at the Polo Grounds.

OK. I'm playing The Show for PS2, I'm on the main menu, I enter the code on the D-Pad, and I start a quick game. Then, when the game is over, I go into my profile, and the only Legends unlocked are the ones I had already unlocked.

Um.... the codes don't work for Red Sox fans??? Call it the Cardinal Curse of 2004

I don't know what you are doing wrong (although I was kidding about playing a game or HR derby immediately.)

If I remember correctly, I did them from the main menu, went right to the rosters and started assigning legends. I am pretty sure that I had a profile loaded before I went back to the main menu and entered the codes..... because I had already purchased the old ballparks, and just wanted the unis and the legends.

I'm sorry I'm not much help. I would try again if I were you, once at the main menu immediately after turning the game on. Then go to the roster screen, and go to the free agents (sounds like you have been there before as you have some legends already). I made roster changes and then saved the rosters separate from my season rosters....

You could try the same thing AFTER loading your profile, but NOT any rosters. Enter the codes, and go to the rosters immediately.

Maybe you entered the code correctly, but because you played a game (using default rosters) after the game, when you went back, the legends were gone? Doesn't seem right, but it's a possibilty.

Having all the legends is a blast, I hope you get it sorted out.

There were lots more, but I forget most of them. Plus, I had already unlocked about half the team.
So did you play against yourself?

OK, I created a 2-player Franchise with Force Trades and Ignore Budgets both on, and I used the Yankees as a feeder club to get all the Legends on to the Red Sox. I went 135-27 and completed most of the goals. Now I only have about ten more Legends left to unlock, plus the stadiums and unis!

BTW, what team did you assign Walter Johnson, Rick Ferrell, Buck Leonard, and Satchel Paige to? I assigned Johnson, Ferrell, and Leonard to the Nationals and Paige to the Orioles. I also couldn't figure out where to put Al Barlick, or why he's on the game at all.

Johnson on the Nationals... I don't have the other two assigned.

My son snagged Satchel Paige for his Cardinals team with some of the other legends (only Ruth and Paige were not actual Cardinals) but heck, he is only 10, and I love the fact that he even knows who Satchel Paige is.

He also digs the funky windup Satchel has on the game (arms slowly rise above the head, ball in the glove once up there, and then take the ball back out, do a couple of windmills of the arm with the ball in his hand -- think fast pitch softball but a much slower arm speed and two revolutions of the arm -- then go back to the top slowly and fire the pitch).

My boy is a pitcher on his little league team, and one inning when I was warming him up (the catcher had made the last out and was getting his gear on) he did the Satchel Paige windup. He seemed a bit dissapointed when I told him to knock it off.

Erik Bedard

I didn't know whether to assign Johnson to the Twins or Rangers, so I just assigned him to the Nationals. I assigned Leonard to the Nationals because he played his home games in D.C., Ferrell to the Nationals because Fisk is already on the Red Sox (even though the game says he's a Senator, I'll always think of him as playing for the Red Sox), and he played for the Senators, like Johnson. Paige is supposed to be on the Browns, who are now the Orioles, so that fit perfectly. I assigned Sparky Anderson to the Reds, but I couldn't figure out Barlick.

I have put in the code at the main menu and my controller has buzzed. where do I go to see if the cooperstown players are unlocked? I have gone to player movement and free agents and have not seen them yet. I have tried this over and over again and have still not seen anything about cooperstown legends. Is there something else you have to do to get them to come up? Do you have to be in a particular mode? I am confused and need help. Thanks, Mac

One thing that really makes me feel that it's a great game is that I've had it for a number of months now and I still play it practically everyday. Usually, I'll get a game, play it for a few weeks and then get bored of it and never play it again.

Also it's a great way to get friends into baseball.

Guess pitch on or off: GUESS PITCH OFF!! I can not stand guess pitch on. I don't need the computer telling me where the ball is going to be pitched at. My eyes work just fine.

I gave myself a whole bunch of legends and played as the Cardinals against the Tigers. I ended up winning 31-1. Gibson threw a complete game, and Carlos Guillen hit a solo shot in the bottom of 9 to give them a run. Gibson hit the next batter (Dimitri Young) was hit in the head with a 98 MPH fastball. Ty Cobb went 5-6, starting off 4-4 with 4 homers.

The MVP NCAA game should be out on PC already; The Show won't.

I created a new career; I finished all the goals on my other one already. (BTW, Gashouse, I got traded the next season and was used as a starter. I just trained my stamina and I got to be really good and made the HoF) I'm on the Rockies; I get called up to The Show. In the bottom of the 12th inning, I come up with runners on first and third and one out in a tie game. I'm 0-5 with four strikeouts to this point. The first pitch is a strike. I foul off the next one. The next pitch is a nasty slider down and in that I swing and miss on, but the catcher misses it and the winning run scores. So I'm 0-6 with five strikeouts, but I still win the game for my team.

Erik Bedard

Yup. Bonds* withdrew from the MLBPA, so they can't use his name in the game. Aside from that, though, who are the prospects? For example, who is Adam Loewen in the game? And any other prospects who haven't debuted yet, like Philip Hughes of the Yanks, Erick Aybar of the Angels, etc.

Anyone ever been able to get some of those Retired stadiums to be your home field during franchise/career? Or to change uniforms for a game in the franchise mode for a game?

I seem to be getting the same problems as far as getting the Hall of Fame distinction for a players career in Career mode. Ended up with 4654 hits, and 2654 runs(though in my game you can't break the career run record), 938 HRs, 2876 RBI's in 26 seasons. But ended up as "Rookie" status...and all that jazz about the "kid could never cut it" in the majors.

StanTheMan
09-25-2006, 06:02 PM
Unfortunately, you cannot select the Polo Grounds, Sportsmans Park, Shibe, or any of the other historic stadiums for your home field in any mode other than exhibition mode, or home run derby.

Same with the uniforms. During Season mode (and I presume Franchise Mode as well), the Old Unis come out on the occassional Sunday game.

The inability to use the old parks as your home park, and the fact that you cannot use legends in the Home Run Derby, are the only two flaws in the game, imo.

I've been working on a career, and I "angered my team" when I asked to be moved up in the rotation, because I was a seven-time ASG starter, four-time Cy Young winner, last year had gone 19-4 with a 1.79 ERA, and was on All-Star status, and starting fourth. I was released, and when nobody picked me up at the end of the season, I retired. I "shocked everyone by retiring on the doorstep of the Hall of Fame."

minnesotatwins7
09-28-2006, 08:29 AM
Stan the Man,

totally agree with you as far as not being able to choose your own uniforms and not being able to play at the Polo Grounds, etc for the season or the Home Run Derby. Can barely think of anything more fun than playing a HR Derby at the Polo grounds.

Other possible flaws.

Why do they always rest Miguel Tejada. It's so hard to get a guy to play 162 games unless you babysit the simulation and do sportscaster or actually play every game.

Possible updates as far as who's on a 35 game hitting streak or something.

The career mode has wonderful layout of your stats. But other players you can't view their player cards in such a way. It would be fun to look at any players stats as you can your created player in career mode. Would even like it to have the categories they led in to be bold and highlighted similiar to an old topps card. Also a listing that says it was a Cy Young year or MVP year would be killer.

Why are the legends so old and already have their stats placed in? Would be fun to try to duplicate the .358 career average of Rogers Hornsby. Or the 4000 hits by Ty Cobb.

When there's a day off, why don't guys like Johan Santana, Roy Halladay, and Chris Carpenter get moved up a day. So they are still pitching every 5th day. This would get them 3-4 more starts a day and would produce more appealing Cy Young caliber stats. Something where when your ace or any pitcher higher in the rotation reaches full energy they should start. Maybe put some sort of setting for that. If I'm the Twins and Johan is fully rested I don't want to see a simulation where Scott Baker pitched 4 innings of 12 home run ball.

Favorite Stan Musial quotes:

Someone once asked Stan why he smiled so much.
His reply, "son, you'd smile a lot too if you knew you were going to hit .350 every year."

And when asked what he would hit if he played in today's game...
"I'd hit around .310..."
The reporter was kind of in awe...and responded..."so you think today's pitchers are better than in your day."
Stan..."heck no, you asked me how I'd hit in today's game, I'm 75 years old."

Padday...how'd you get that option to play in the classic parks for the Home Run derby? Do I have to unlock all of the stadiums perhaps? Or all of the greats. I currently just have the silver past-time guys unlocked.

yeah...the whole polo grounds deal...not really for homers...especially if you crank up the speed on the pitches...more for laughing at your friends trying to yank em out quick...versus getting stuck with pounding them to the left center to right center area...where...only 3 men have ever hit ones out of the Polo Grounds. Lou Brock was one of them actually...kinda funny the guy only smacked around 100 career homers in 3000 hits....and to have one that went around 490 feet.

Erik Bedard

You have to unlock a stadium, then keep pressing R1 until you see Old Time Stadiums at the top, where it normally says American League, National League, or Minor League.

Actually, four men hit a home run to the Center Field Bleachers (the non - double decked part of Center)...

Joe Adcock was the only man to do it for a Long, Long time.

Then Lou Brock and Hank Aaron (http://www.baseball-almanac.com/players/player.php?p=aaronha01) did it on CONSECUTIVE Days in 1962. One was just to the right of the center field "notch" and one was to the left side of the "notch" near the clubhouse stairs. Brock's home run hit the top of the wall and trickled over.

The next day, when Aaron (http://www.baseball-almanac.com/players/player.php?p=aaronha01) hit his, was also the famous game when Marv Thromberry was called out on an RBI triple. He was called out for failing to touch second base. When Casey Stengel ((The Mets Manager) came out to argue with the ump, and go no-where with him, he decided to take his argument over to the first base ump and see what he had to say.

The ump immediately said "Forget it Casey..... he missed first base too!"

Luke Easter was the fourth man to hit a Center Field HR at the Polo Grounds. He was a Negro League Player. The New York Cubans played in the Negro Leagues at the PG for years.

Ok, so I am a PG nut..... I admit it.

How do you get games to work online? Sorry if this is a really dumb question.
Not a dumb question. Heck, I didn't figure it out until about 5 months after I bought the game. Ok, here is what you need to play MLB 06' The SHow "online".
1.) PREFERRABLY a DSL connection OR a cable modem connection (56k dialup is too slow, and lags games, it's no fun that way).
2.) A ETHERNET cable (Think of a oversized version of a telelphone cord).
3.) Plug one end of the ethernet cable in one of the slots in the BACK of your ps2, and plug the other end in the back of the dsl modem (or cable modem)
4.) You will also need the ONLINE startup disk. Without that disk to load the features, you will NOT be able to play online.
5.) Once the disk is loaded, put the game in your ps2, you will also need a memory card (WARNING! It requires a TON of free space, so I just use one just for that game).
6.) Create your user name, and bam! Follow the easy instructions. Instead of playing the dumb computer in games, you can now play versus hundreds of other people. There are many different rooms, for levels. Ie; Rookie rooms, Pro rooms, All Star, etc. East, West, Central, among other rooms. I'd say about 12 -15 rooms in all.
7.) In order to play in the Pro rooms, or All Star rooms, for every win you get 5 points, for every loss they minus 5 points, every time your getting your butt handed to you and you wimp out and quit (I can't stand when people quit! ) they minus 5 points also. The ycalculate team batting average, winning streaks, and your overall record. pretty cool stuff. I hope that I answered your question. If you need any more help feel free to drop me a pm.
~AC~
