I recently came back from the Phillies S.T. in clearwater FL. and receved the flowing singatures...
Aaron Rowand (2)
Mike Schmit
Pat Burrel
Eude Brito
Alex S. Gonzalez
Shane Victorino
Ryan Madson
Geoff Geary
and about 10 other prospects whos name i coulnt catch
Luke Scott (Astros)
I was able to get autographs about 15 minuts befor the game betwen 3rd base and Left field, (have a sheet with names for Prospects so you can yell out names) and you can try signing inbetween innings along the side of the field when the players leave the stadium. Also at the end of the game they aslo sign at the same place at the begining of the game. somethimes a few players will do batting practice afterwards and they might sign then too.

I have autographed balls of 5 Nationals players that I got in person at appearances in the area away from the park. Brad Wilkerson signed a ball for me at a store appearance, and a February Nationals fanfest at a sports bar resulted in getting signed balls from Ryan Zimmerman, Jose Guillen, Brian Schneider, and Brandon Watson. I prefer public appearances to the stadium. At the stadium there are too many people who are competing with you for a guy's autograph, and if there is someone who tries to give a player multiple items to sign, or if a scuffle breaks out in a group, the player will stop signing, and you are out of luck.

The Wilkerson appearance was advertised on sports talk radio here in Washington and the fanfest appearance was advertised through the Nationals website. But, this website might be of interest:

Great site. I don't know if they currently do it, but when I joined a little over a year ago, (there is a fee for the deluxe site) I was able to receive a free autograph 8X10 of my choosing. I picked Monte Irvin.

I just got back from Tucson last night, and I saw three white sox spring training games while I was down there. I got 35 different autographs too. Mostly all of them I recieved by the parking lots as they exited. But one of the coolest things was that Scott Podsednik was actually on my plane back to Chicago! I talked to him briefly, and had him sign a ball. He was staying in Tucson a little longer, so he could get some extra work in. Anyways, heres a list of all the autographs I got at st. Ask me if you'd like to see pictures of anything.
Ozzie Guillen: 2005 ws card, 2005 coaches 8x10, both in blk. sharpie.
A.J. Pierzynski: 8x10 of him and jenks, scan is below, blk. sharpie
Jermaine Dye: 2005 official ws ball blk sharpie, 2005 ws card blk sharpie

A scuffle? I've been collecting for almost 20 years and haven't seen a scuffle yet. An argument here and there, but that's about it. I will agree, though, that going to functions like you mentioned is a better way for getting autographs. The sig is usually better, and there's more of an opportunity for Q&A and for a photo with the player.
My pet peeve are the people who try to get a bunch of things signed at the game. My rule of thumb is that during ST, I usually had a player two cards. If he signs both, fine. If not, it's no biggie. When the regular season starts, though, I hand the player one card. They have much less time and it sucks when a player has signed 3 or 4 for one person, then leaves without signing yours.

I'm pretty sure I was standing by that purple building, the one with the tall blue fence, and that's where I got nearly all of my autographs. But I got mine after or during the game, when the players would start to leave.

It's called a hobby. Although I'm only turning 15, theres no problem with adults getting autographs. It's what we like to do. I don't know why your on the baseball memoribila page if your just going to rip on us for having a hobby. Most of the very little people who sell autos on ebay get them at private signings or conventions, or buy and resell autos, because getting autos at games is a roll of the dice.

What's your problem? I don't tell you what to collect, do I? The problem is that some adults do turn around and sell their stuff. To me, that's collecting for the wrong reasons. But there are plenty of adults who collect for themselves and their own enjoyment, and if you can't understand that, then that's YOUR problem, not mine or anyone else's.
BTW, I guarantee that some of the kids you see getting autographs aren't just getting them for themselves, either.

Gee, thanks for the advice
Of course we know the difference--you're the one who seems to have a problem with that. First of all, you're seriously misguided--$300? Even if someone was getting autographs to sell, they'd have to get a lot of stuff signed to make that much money, not to mention that, unless you're talking about the Yankees or Red Sox, there's no way anyone could make that much in a day.
Again, it's the few bad apples that spoil it for the rest of us. I don't understand why you are insinuating that we are all like that. It's like me saying that all Cardinal fans are jerks just because of you.
I don't know about the rest of the posters on this thread, but I find your tone to be insulting. :evil

That is a very judgmental thing to say. I do see your point regarding kids getting autographs, but they are not the only ones collecting. I have been collecting them for almost 20 years now. Not once I have turned around ever sold any of autos on Ebay. I collect them for the fun of it, and I would also like to pass them on down to my kids (when I have any) some day.
So that's fine if you think all "grown ups" are out to make a buck. This thread is about sharing autograph experiences, and perhaps to help out other collectors add to their collection. You need not to post any more negative comments in this forum.
Thank you.
PS, I can still have a "real job" and collect autos at the same time.

What exactly is your issue against people collecting items? It's their right, and as such, since baseball collecting is a part of the sport, that's why there's this separate forum under BBF.
Now why exactly are you trying to dissuade people from collecting signatures, bats, balls, photos, etc?

I can't get 300 for jersey. . . that's autographed by 2/3 of the players in MLB. Do you really think you could get $300 for a Danny Ardoin jersey? You have to get a Jeter, Pedro, Manny, etc. for that to happen. I know where you're coming from when you talk about adults with "hoardes" of items to get signed, but I think you're confusing adults who are PREPARED with ones who are out to sell. Before I go to a game, I pull a card for each player. I don't see how that constitutes bringing HOARDES of items.
Honestly, I don't know why I'm trying to explain myself--it's not like I give a flying F what you think.

Accusing people of doing things you have no idea of is out of line, wogdoggy. You can make your point without your common practice of spouting off on things you really can't speak of. One can assume you hit little leaguers who don't perform well because other coaches might do that. But that doean't mean that can openly make that accusation.

Which 11 year old kid are you referring to being overwhelmed? In what situation?
What makes you think we're doing that? We could just as easily accuse you of knocking some kid out of the way. I'm not sure why you'd even brought this topic up, since I don't see anyone here having said they did this, nor encouraged others to do that.
Did you previously have an issue with yourself being pushed away as a kid? Was a friend or family member of yours pushed away why you're accusing us here of doing this?

Baseball is for KIDS.
I agree that when it comes to autographs and stuff, letting kids get their fill is the correct thing to do, but "Baseball is for Kids"?
That's just crazy. If that were true, there wouldn't be a person on this site over the age of 14, and only families at baseball games. I go to at least a few games a year...and haven't brought a kid with me since my little brother grew up. Should I stay home in case a kid wants my seat?

That I'll agree with.
First thing I do when I sit at any game...whether it's a minor or major league game, is look around and find the closest little kid. First off, it's a blast to watch them enjoy the game, and second, if I ever catch a foul ball, I plan to immediately hand it off, and I figure if I already have the target picked out, I can get the ball in that kid's hand that much faster.
I think most people here collect autographs because if reminds them of their childhood...how fun it was to watch this game before you knew about things like steroids, contracts, and all that stuff that makes the game less of a game. As long as they're not being those jerks you describe, I have no problem with it.

That's silly. The majority of kids at the ballpark are annoying as hell because, I don't believe, that their parents care if they are running wild or underfoot or not. I don't think adults need to take a back-seat to kids (especially other peoples kids) when it comes to baseball.
Yankees
04-04-2006, 09:51 PM
I think it really depends on the way the adult handles the autograph seeking.
For example, I have interacted with two adults (they were together) who blocked the area by the dugout, trying to get all their stuff signed. A day later, I got there about an hour early, and when they showed up, one of them whined about how they should be at the front, for various reasons (could recognize players by face, etc.).
Yet, I have also talked to two adults (also together) who, while seeking many autos, still took the time to ask others who they needed, and let way for them to come forward when said player(s) came to the dugout.

But most kids don't care about the experience at the ballpark anymore. The only reason they'd even hear of any of these players is because they're in some video game. I took some kids to the traveling Hall of Fame exhibit, and they were only interested in the pc terminals that had bios of the players, and they were disappointed because there was no Pokemon stuff.
There are some great kids who post here, don't get me wrong, and this doesn't aplly to them. But most don't care. Unless they can get a profit out of it, or if their parents are pushing them to get autographs.

While I do believe in kids first in instances like that, just because they're a kid is not an excuse to let them have their way 100% of the time. And I don't buy the "it's bad for adults, but fine for kids" defense. That's a nice way for teaching a kid to have no respect for anything because they feel they're entitled to something.

agreed if this were the case
step out of the way for some other kid other than yourself.they are more entitled to that autograph than you are cause you are a big adult and should let the kid have his memories..your memory will be..hey i gave up something for a kid..yeah its bad for an adult to stick his baseball out there first to sign.if i were the player i'd never sign another mans items.

I might be the only one here that thinks this, but I think autograph seeking is survival of the fittest. If you want that autograph, you have to wait in line for around an hour for the parks to open, and run to the spot to be the first one there. And if you're not, you squeeze your way through. And when I get there, I'm always prepared, carrying my little backpack, with something for at least every player to sign. And the winner gets the autograph. I know that I care more about autographs than some little 8 year old ahead of me, and I'm willing to do what I have to. I've taken a lot of crap from stubborn parents too, but it's not like I'm pushing little kids over. And a lot of the times when I'm in the front, I give the signers other peoples stuff for them to sign, so those kids can get that autograph. Sorry if I sound a little over aggresive, but that's how I get my autographs.

Well, after pushing aside a half-dozen kids at Coors Field tonight :laugh (actually, I was one of only three or so there getting DBacks autographs), I came out with 10 sigs:
Miguel Batista
Eric Byrnes
Orlando Hudson
Tony Clark
Russ Ortiz
Claudio Vargas
Jose Valverde
Jeff Davanon
Shawn Green
All of those were on cards. I also got Mark Grace on a ball (he's a colorman for FSN in Phoenix). That one was pretty lucky, since about 5 minutes after entering the park, I got a BP foul ball, so that's what I had him sign. This ranks as one of the best nights I've had (collecting-wise) at Coors. The DBacks and Pirates have always been good signers there.
Now I can't to get on Ebay tonight and start making some ca$h

At the Rockies/Phillies game last night, I got nine Phils:
Mike Lieberthal
Pat Burrell
Ryan Howard
Shane Victorino
Ryan Franklin
Jimmy Rollins
Jon Lieber
Rheal Cormier
Cory Lidle
Darn, no kids to push aside  Actually, there were a couple of youngsters there, and I think that can be a help when getting the players' attention.

Baseball is for KIDS..
I would definantly strongly disagree, sure Baseball is probably the most kid friendly sports atmosphere with the mascots and what have you, but most certainly is not only for kids, if it was that way tell that to the die hard 90 year old folks who have been coming to games since they were 15 years old, as someone else mentioned, now this may seem a little extreme, but in a world series game I think baseball turns more towards adults than kids, to kids its just another game, tell that to a red sox fan who was at the game when they won the world series for the first time in almost 100 years. Now im not sure if that makes much sense, but you should understand where I'm coming from.
As for these autographs, has anyone here been to citizen's bank park and know where a good spot is to get some autos for the away team? The D-rays are coming to town this year and I want to try to get a Johnny Gomes autograph.

I don't see a problem with adults getting autographs. For cases like myself (I'm not quite an adult yet), my dad could rarely get me to the games. And if he did he had to work and could not get me there soon enough for batting practice. Even if we did get there for batting practice I doubt he would have helped me out like many parents I've seen. In fact I think many of them are pretty bad, it seems like they want the ball or autograph more than there kids do.
So I do get kind of jealous of little kids when I see younger kids at BP with their parents. However I don't go overboard with it like some people much older than me. When I catch a ball I will give it to a younger kid. Also I don't push people out of the way to get an autograph. When I go I usually just hope to catch a ball and maybe talk to some player or get an occasional autograph.
Now I do think there are some adults that go and are sick and pathetic. Last year I went to an O's-Devil Rays game. A teenager about my age was at the game standing in the area with me. He started talking to this nut-job who thought he knew the players and said he played a game in the majors. Anyway the kid saw Rocco Balldelli, called him over and started talking to him (nice guy BTW). He told him he was a big fan. So Rocco got a ball from him and tossed it to him right before he left. The older guy jumps in front of him and steals the ball. The teenager was begging him to give him the ball. He was saying "please Rocco's my favorite player" he even offered to pay for the ball. All the guy had to say was "Rocco's my son's favorite player too so I'm going to keep it, I'll help you get another ball though". I was happy to see the Johnny Gomes did get him a ball. However that guy should still be ashamed of himself. Those are the adults that need to get a life. For the most part, many of the adults I've seen there seem to be nice and just enjoy the game. But every once in a while I run into a jack@$$ like that guy.
Anyway after that rant, does anyone know a site that gives autograph values. I'm not interested in selling any of my autographs. I'm just curious as to how much all of many are worth (and if I should be taking better care of them). Thanks.

Hey, I'm the guy who used to be call me genius, but I wasnt diggin that name so I changed it, hope its not a problem, but anyway, yeah, I applaud you for giving a ball to another kid, I'm not sure if I caught a Homerun ball I could give it up, and I'm just hoping that when I go to the Phillies-D-rays game this year in Philly I can get Johnny Gomes's autograph, that would really man a lot to me, I love that guy.

Well its not homerun balls I give to younger kids, just BP homeruns. If I was ever lucky enough to catch an actual homerun I'd probably keep it.
It will probably be hard to get an autograph from Johnny Gomes. Most starters don't shag balls from the BPs I went to (although Gomes was an exception that one game I went to, so maybe he does). My suggestion would be to stand in the side seats (not outfield) while the Tampa Bay plays catch. Being in Philly gives you an advantage though. Try calling him over, it seems like visiting players get excitied when fans now who they are. Especially younger players. Good Luck

Getting back to the original intent of this thread...
I've found that at Fenway Park, it's almost impossible to get a Red Sox autograph; usually only 1 or two players even sign, and when they do, there's always a huge crowd. One game that I went to last year, there was a mass of people trying to get John Halama's autograph! So, it's usually better off to try for the visiting team, so hanging out around the visiting dugout is often a good idea. The same game in which most fans were scrambling for Halama's auto, I easily got Chad Orvella and Toby Hall's autos. Also, the visitor's bullpen is right next to the RF seats, so you can sometimes get someone who is walking in or out to stop for a minute or two. Last year, I got Ivan Rodriguez, although so far this year I've had to settle for Bruce Walton, Toronto's bullpen coach.
