I think if you delete posts well after they are written for being no worse than the occasional bickerspat some threads devolve into momentarily then you risk eliminating your inventory of people willing to post because in the final analysis we all love our little scribbles like children.
Don Block, whether anyone cares to know this or not, is a great College English professor, superb author, noted critic and his knowledge of baseball is impeccable.
Quite frankly I'm saddened by his absence and question contributing to a site that has little or no ongoing concern for someone who consistently contributed so much for so many years.

Hmmm, wondering what this is all about and why such an ardent contributor would be relegated to the sidelines. Afterall, what value is a site like this without passionate contributors?

...what value is a site like this without passionate contributors?
The answer is none.
I expect this thread will be zotz-ed for not being about baseball or on some other thin pretext but it does cut to the heart of the matter:
I don't know what kind of living the owner of BBF makes from this site if any at all.
I'm inclined to think he might break even or make barely enough to justify the headaches.
Most of the Mods I've encountered, the two here on the Phillies thread, the Natty Mod, and the Giants Mod come to mind have been more than gracious to me, have never wielded their authority in anything other than a deliberative, cautious and considerate manner, and I applaud their continued efforts to be fair in their actions.
This was not about current posts on that particular thread but ones well in the past. They wouldn't even have caused a ripple in the Phillies forum cause Phillies fans are obviously thicker-skinned...I know because I had been following the same thread Don was posting on.
On the other hand I have no respect for post-sanitizing a thread because someone posts something unpopular or a dustup occurs (see: the bobby abreu gold glove thread) because that's the nature of passionate discourse.
Which in turn makes this site appealing.
Not a bunch of Stepford Baseball posts.
I can get that watching a local newscast.
I would welcome a credible official explanation for post-hoc sanitizing in this thread.

Ed Hardiman wouldn't say that either but then again he's more of a lurker than a leader...Don is wildcat striking the BBF...
I say we all show our solidarity with Don by a work stoppage until Management knuckles under and gives us a ten cent an hour raise across the board!

First, welcome to the Phillies forum all are welcome regardless of other favorite teams, don't lurk, chuck your two cents in.
Second, thank you for noticing a real asset to this great site is currently MIA due to a practice less than honorable in my opinion.
For example:
If we are heatedly bickering over let's call it "baseball trinkets" and I wrongly ad-hominem posted you are a lousy dog catcher when in fact you happen to be a crackerjack mutt swiper in real life and you reply "not so mr. poopyhead" and that gets left in the thread for quite some time and we have moved on.
Going in much later to remove it is a perfect example of what's called in the law "unringing the bell" and everyone knows that just isn't possible...
I'm not ascribing evil intent on the webmaster's part in doing it, I assume the webmaster considered it tidying up not controversial.
But this is baseball bickery not celery.
In baseball terms you hit my batter, I sit one of yours down the next frame, umpire warns both sides, game back on...
Finally, if you purposely misquote me again I'll key your Chevette in the parking lot, I said webmaster not Mod...

What you read is what it is.
I would hope at some point those who compelled Don to leave would at least fairly explain their actions.
I give them full benefit of the doubt and think if post-hoc censoring is a reasonable activity they would have no problem replying in this thread.
It's not required, expected or a demand, the net result is still the same.
No Block.
I would hope a concern of this nature on our part would merit their attention, consideration and reply rather than simply yanking the thread without comment.

Day 494, shipwrecked on a deserted thread.
Dear Diary,
I sighted the sails of a ship but it turned out to be a Chilean Squid Mulching boat and frankly I'd rather not be rescued if it means smelling like mulched squid for 8 weeks.
I managed to barter my belt and a clump of hair for a baseball bat and glove however and promised a guy named Sixto I'd keep an eye out for his brother Manny Lezcano...
I laid out a field and there was a big controversy, domed or not domed, and the whole artificial turf versus the island is just sand and rocks thing and got down to replaying the greatest game ever:
September 21, 1964 Phillies versus the Reds
Only this time I'm on the mound and the Red's Ruiz won't steal home...changing baseball history forever...
Wait a minute! Can you believe that? The ******* snuck home while I was writing this...
Oh well it's hard to throw a slider down and away using a seagull as a ball anyway...
Still no Don Block, I suppose once great herds or flocks of Block roamed this island the signs are everywhere, dictionary pages with the word "pragmatic" crossed out and thesaurii with the words beginning in Q and X lined through as "pretentious" or "French."
My theory is a disease like "disgust" may have decimated their ranks...
I will resume my search tomorrow...

It's not a matter of his being banned or suspended, he stopped posting because he was censored, and those posts were no better or worse than hundreds of others I've read on this site.
And I read them before they were yanked and if you're going to leave posts sitting around for everybody to read for quite some time what is the purpose of later attempts to sanitize a thread?
That's the only reason he stopped posting.

I'm not suggesting you're in any way, shape or form involved with this matter nor am I asking you to defend the circumstances but your thoughts are much appreciated.
Websites are content and quality driven when you depend on volunteers to police a site and volunteers to provide the vast content disputes between those parties are bound to arise.
Is there a system of redress or recourse in place for the members? Probably not, nor is one really needed when courtesy and consideration would solve 99.99% of the disputes.
Are posts a mere popularity contest or is there a reasonable expectation if you take the time & effort to state your opinion you shouldn't have to worry down the road it will disappear?
Why would I get him to come back? I didn't zotz his posts. The people responsible should take ten seconds to address his concerns with him. Hasn't he earned that simple courtesy?
I fully recognize and applaud the thankless work the webmaster & mods do policing this many posts, it's a great site.
Maybe the easiest way to frame my argument was already pointed out by another poster:
The readers are getting punished.

from the bb-f rulebook:
II. Comments about our policy:
Any suggestions on this policy may be made directly to Sean Holtz at webmaster@baseball-almanac.com
without knowing what got zapped nor for what stated reasons, my take on closing threads and deleting words is that that ought to be done only as a LAST resort.
at times it gets kinda tough to be a mod and have members rail on ya.
(trust me on this one, as a co-moderator in the bond- giants forum.)
we all haul around own own baggage and fears and feelings and at times it gets the better of us.
i do not know what happened, nor under what circumstances the deletions were made, but write to sean and ask him. he will reply. maybe converations between management and donzblock were fruitless. heck, i dunno if they ever even took place. but yes, each and every bb-f member has earned that courtesy, i agree.

At least you stepped off which takes guts rather than allow inertia to propel you further down the wrong path.
I've never-ever seen you act less than circumspect so you walk the talk I admire that.
We're all human, when I first got here I thought mocking the opinions of others was the height of baseball moral superiority, it took one simple post (thanks LP) to open my eyes to what a cheesedick I was being.
That wasn't LP's intent but it isn't pleasant to look in the mirror and not like what you see.
I'll happily and properly post on this thread per the topic and get 10,000 views on this thread once the season starts.
Is asking politely for somebody in charge from this site to engage in a single act of simple courtesy to a long standing member an outrageous demand?
I think not.
Nor do I see the webmaster or others involved as villians.
Just a simple case of the price paid now far exceeding the imagined benefit to this site by removing those posts.

Don's curses are more effective than most.
Remember the curse Block put on the DeLorean Car Company?

What about the curse Don put on Enron?
Or Doc's curse on that sock puppet from Petco?
I hear he's doing Bar-Mitvah's in Hackensack now.

I guess not having the privilege to read Don's contributions, be they poetry or incantations from his grimoire, has dulled my memory. Reassurances phrum you, the Phightins phorum phan, Deb, and mojo have reinstilled my phaith in the curse.
As for the keystone prison ordeal, I was fortunate enough to have Alfonso distracted. He was busied by swinging at first pitch sliders in the dirt. Tunneling north by northwest, I broke to daylight in an abandoned patch of field about a hundred or so feet behind shortstop about 1:15 pm yesterday but had to keep hightailing it...little did I know Fonzie was hot on my trail. Day 10,736
Stranded on a Deserted Thread
I was taking a walk on the other side of the island today and saw a footprint in the sand.
Dare I hope it the spoor of the elusive Adept of Alliteration? The Virtuoso of Verbs? The Swami of Syntax?
Or just Aquilino Lopez looking for a third pitch again?

If I may, with a few liberties.
We will miss him in the forums
And we will miss his taking Ed Wade to the mat
But he honors his convictions
And I respect him for that

He was censored in a thread well after it had been posted and I can drag you through a lot of threads on this site where a lot worse remains than what he wrote.
If the moral certainty of your actions is so weak you have to sneak somebody it isn't surprising you'd also hope silence would be a credible defense for your actions.
The consequence is no Block eviscerating the single worst home opener in 70 years.
What next?
No Block when Rollins takes the collar?
No Block when Bell goes on a fearsome .212 tear through April?
No Block when Manuel channels Nick Leyva?
So we're going on strike May one, will you join us? It's a wildcat strike!

There are many people on this site who make it a great and compelling read but when one of us suffers injustice the rest of us should stand up.
I understand why a webmaster or a moderator might delete something and later decide there might've been a better alternative to the problem.
Certainly when enough people clearly value the contribution of a writer like Don Block you might at least make an effort to convey to him you see his point of view and reconcile your differences.
It's simple courtesy.
I will not blame anyone except to say, fix it.
I guess if I was prudent I'd have an entire message board set up so I can hold out at least until they realize chimp scabs aren't worth snot-doodly nor will I be happier not scribbling here for all the members I like.
I gotta go Spike Lee on them, and "Do the Right Thing."

Ah, were it only that simple, Androctus! To all the Phillies regulars here, I hear your anguish, and I feel your pain! :(
Truth be told, your Phillies Forum is not the only one suffering from the absence of the Professor. In addition to losing the Professor, I've lost a few other of my regulars...and my forum is also paying a high price.
Oh, for the good old days of BBF!

Day 33,873
Stranded on a Deserted Thread
Sometimes when I put a Conch shell to my ear I can hear "Outta Here, Michael Jack..."
I've domesticated some wild goats and except for putting way too much vermouth in my martini they've become quite good bartenders...
Meanwhile I found a cave where crude drawings with captions like "Chavez swings with his foot in the bucket" and "Manuel should get an E every time he starts Bell" leads me to believe the Bard of Baseball has blazed this trail...
Yet some of the captions have been wiped clean. Why? What could they have said?
Who could've done it?
Soon I will make a raft by lashing several goats together and in the hope of leaving this infernal island...

Day 56,812
Stranded on a Deserted Thread
I thought by staking Jon Lieber's 0-4 record after 6 starts in a clearing under the large palm tree I'd easily lure Doc Block (Donnus Blockacynicallus) from his hidden lair.
Instead all I got left is a fly blown femur of Lieber's and a buzzard who choked to death on Lieber's indigestible ERA.
I'm reminded I only have 4 cans of spaghetti-o's left...
