Legends owner Lew Snyder was offered an opportunity to become a charter member of the new major league, Classic Keeper League, and immediately grabbed the chance. This was a direct result of the failure of the American and National Leagues to reach a new collective bargaining agreement prior to and during the 1960 season. There was much acrimony on both sides during the negotiations, and when a group of wealthy sportsmen began discussions about creating a new league, offering large contracts to most major league players, the vast majority of players chose to take a gamble on joining. The league had a hugely successful first year, attracting over 40,000,000 fans and firmly establishing the venture as a success.
The Legends drafted with the future in mind, but through some shrewd last minute signings was still able to field a highly competitive group of players. Through the luck of the draw the Legends were placed in the William Hulbert Divsion along with the Quakers, Skipjacks and Senators. For the moment, this appears to be the weakest of the three league divisions. The Legends took advantage of this to fashion a 93-75 record. Although this was only the fifth best record in the league, it was enough to bring the Legends in first in the division. The Legends look forward to building on this success through future drafts.
1961: 93-75, .554 Fifth best in league, first in division.
