Sorry guys, I mis-read the question. A book I have says Andre Dawson was the first Expo to be credited with a steal of home in 1977.

My source is the Retrosheet Event Files. I do have Hawk's steal too from 1977. From the info I have, the difference about Hawk's exploit is that it's the first one not being a double or triple steal in the team's history.

I hope I haven't started a war...

Chicoutimi CP

Gary Sutherland?

Because of the confusion or mix up or whatever, I'll give the answer right away : BOB BAILEY.

My source : Retrosheet Event Files. Details : 5/12/70, @ NY Mets, triple steal in 2nd inning with Ron Fairly stealing 2nd base, John Bateman stealing 3rd, and Bobby Wine batting vs. P Ray Sadecki and C Duffy Dyer.

Look at the play-by-play following the boxscore here : http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/B05120NYN1970.htm ... 2nd inning.

Here's one:

Who was the unlucky first Expo to hit into a triple play.

To be fair, it wasn't his fault. Here's how it happend:

From RetroSheet
Montreal Expos @ St. Louis Cardinals - Top of the 4th - Score 7-3 (3 men on: Bryan Little 1B, Terry Francona 2B, Charlie Lea 3B)

____ ______ (MON) is the batter with a ?-? count. He hits a low liner ground ball that 2B (Jeff Doyle) short-hopped and started a regular 4-6-3 double play by throwing to the SS (Ozzie Smith) who forces the runner from first, Bryan Little (OUT 1)
SS throws to the 1B (Jim Adduci) who retires the batter, ________(OUT 2)
The runner from second, Terry Francona, thought the ball had been caught in the air and that he had been doubled off so he started to leave the field. The 1B threw to the 2B who threw to the 3B (Ken Oberkfell) who tagged the runner (OUT 3)

Chicoutimi CP

Chicoutimi CP

Greg Harris

Even if I am a bit late to reply, congrats, RS!

Here's a footnote : On September 28, 1995, Harris (pitching righty) retired Reggie Sanders to start off the ninth inning of a game against the Cincinnati Reds. Then he turned around to face the left-handed Hal Morris.

Harris issued a free pass, thus becoming the first ambidextrous major-league pitcher since Elton "Ice Box" Chamberlain of the American Association in 1888.

Nerve-wracked, he stayed a southpaw and induced a ground-out from Eddie Taubensee, closing out the inning by retiring Bret Boone as a righty.

The last pitcher to use both hands in a pro game had been Bert Campaneris, who did so in 1962 while playing for Daytona Beach in the Florida State League.

Andre Dawson did the trick 5 times (1978-79, 1981-82-83) and Vladimir Guerrero, 2 (his 2 30-30 seasons in 2001 and 2002). Which player had the other 20 HR-20 SB season?

Augustin_"Gus"
07-26-2006, 10:18 PM
Right you are. Hope to fool you guys with a vague formulation, but the first person to reply to the question was right on track.

From the Daytona cubs' web site:

The historic ballpark opened on June 4, 1914 as Daytona City Island Ballpark. Six years later, Daytona Beach obtained its first franchise and became a charter member in the class D Florida State League. During the 1920’s, a road circling the ballpark was built. A grandstand with a press box was built behind home plate to replace the original wood bleachers, and two additional covered sections of grandstands were added along the first base line, along with a segregated viewing area (in order to comply with the Jim Crow seating law). An uncovered bleacher along the third base line completed this ballpark expansion.

In 1946, Jackie Robinson came to town for spring training with the Montreal Royals, the Brooklyn Dodgers Triple-A farm club. He was banned from playing in Jacksonville and Sanford, but not in Daytona. He debuted here on March 17, 1946. His first plate appearance came in an exhibition game against their parent club, the Brooklyn Dodgers. Robinson then became the first African-American player in the Major Leagues.

(...)

In memory of the first site hosting a racially integrated game in baseball history, the ballpark was renamed “Jackie Robinson Ballpark” in 1990.

They actually have a statue of Jackie Robinson that looks every bit like the one we have here in Montréal.

There is actually another stadium named after Jackie Robinson. The baseball stadium on the campus of UCLA university.

2- Who's the former Expo

3- What team he was playing for when he got the hit

4- the date of the event

Maybe I should give you a hint.

He has asthma.

Wich Expo has hit the most Home runs in Milwaukee in team history. Not against the Brewers in total, but strictly in Milwaukee. That's a name no one would ever guess. I'm sure the person who will get this will have to look it up.

The answer is Chris Widger. I also have to admit I now have a 2004 Media Guide and I found the answer right away after Gus asked the question.

But Gus, it seems you have made a mistake : the media guide talks about 5 home runs hit by Widger. But those were hit IN MONTREAL :) Not in Milwaukee.

I looked up each of these home runs in the Retrosheet Event Files. Plus in the Retrosheet player database, it says that, up to the end of last season, Widger had 7 home runs against the Brewers during his career.

1 in Milwaukee with the Mariners in 1995 (his first ever);
4 in Montreal with the Expos in 1999;
1 in Montreal with the Expos in 2000;
1 in Milwaukee with the Expos in 2000.

If you look at the right column, you'll see that Guerrero hit the most HRs in Milwaukee, with 7.

Very tough question indeed, though.

Hey we havent played that in a long time either. Time to revive our old trivia threads!

I'm still playing with the Expos on my Play Station 2 (they're not dead. No sir) and last night, Ben Sheets (I got him in a trade some time ago) threw a perfect game against the Atlanta Braves. That got me taking a hard long look at the history of perfect games, all 17 of them (official perfect games, that means Pedro's dosent count). Of course, I looked at all the boxscores, especially Dennis Martinez's perfecto in 91.

Now, let me ask you this: Of the players who got to play for the Expos that day in LA, two have been on the field for more than one perfect game during they're career. The first one should be pretty easy, the second one, not so much.

So who's brave enough to face this test?

PS: this is post 666 for me. :evil

Ron Hassey and Darryl Strawberry.

Ron Hassey is correct. The first and as far as I know, only man ever to catch two perfect games, Hassey backstopped the perfect game thrown in May of 81 by Len Barker of the Cleveland Indians.

But Darryl Strawberry altough he was on field for Martinez' perfect game and took part in another one, wasn't an Expo player at the time. I'm looking for another Expo, besides Hassey, who played the 7-28-1991 perfect game and played in another one in his career.

A hint perhaps, would be helpful. Think Expo infielder who could go a long time without making an error...

Hey great question AG. Infielder, 91, the only name I can come up with is Spike Owen. We remember his errorless streak, so that would be my guess. But it is just that, a guess.

Well, guess what my friend, you are right. Spike Owen was the starting 3rd baseman for the Anaheim Angels on July 28th, 1994, three years to the day after Martinez' perfecto, when Kenny Rogers pitched a perfect game for the Texas Rangers.

I stumbled upon this trivia question in L'Acadie Nouvelle newspaper (french language newspaper from New Brunswick) this morning, I tought it was interesting. In 1973, the Expos went to polyester uniforms beacuse one of the players on the team was allergic to wool.

Who was it?

Ken Singleton
