Am I the only person who really cares if the USA wins? I really couldn't believe the Canada game. I was literally watching in disbelief.
GO USA!

The same easily could have been said before the Canada game.

No? The Canadians had some good players on their team... players that have been and played in the majors
I think the highest anyone on South Africa's team has been is AA?

True, but you never know.
I honestly doubt the US will have another letdown.

What is the offical mercy rule? 17-0 now going into the bottom of the 5th. Rocket has somehow given up 1 hit. How SA got that, I will never know.

It's over. The US won 17-0 in a mercy rule shortened game.

Feeling a little stupid now Wilkie, being the only person to say S. Africa after the first 5-inning/15 runs mercy rule in WBC history was scored.

Here's the part that's relevant to this case, but please read the article, as it pertains to pitch counts as well:
WBC sets pitch limits, mercy rule for upcoming tourney (http://cbs.sportsline.com/mlb/story/9190697)
* * *
All games will use designated hitters. Games will be stopped after five innings when a team is ahead by 15 or more runs and after seven innings when a team is ahead by at least 10 runs. A game can be stopped in the middle of an inning if a team reaches the threshold.

The official release regarding rules. (http://www.worldbaseballclassic.com/2006/news/article.jsp?ymd=20060126&content_id=1301422&vkey=wbc_pr&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb)
So far the rule has only be in use five times and only the USA vs. South Africa game has had the game terminated after 5 innings.

When you go 17-zip, that's more like piling on. I would've felt bad for the SA team, but sometimes, you've just gotta dominate, let the ones on the bottom of the doggypile be damned.
Now let's see what Team USA can do against other more powerful teams they will face.
That link says about the same as what I'd posted, but glad to have the "official" rules. :D
EARLY TERMINATION FOR LARGE LEADS
The umpire-in-chief will award a regulation game in Rounds 1 or 2 of the tournament to the Team that:
• Is ahead by 10 or more runs when the opposing team has batted in at least seven innings;
• Is ahead by 15 or more runs when the opposing team has batted in at least five innings.
Note: A game can be terminated in the middle of an inning if the team reaches the necessary number while at bat. The game will end immediately after that run is scored, unless it is because of a home run, in which case all runs score(similar to games won in a team's last turn at bat).

If it was game 1 then it would be piling it on. However it was either wear out the South African team's pitchers or wear out Team USA's pitchers- and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what way the US was going to go.
No need to drag the game on for more than 5 innings when they didn't have to...just get it done and get it done fast.
