Anybody know the story with the 2-toned batting helmets the Mets are wearing in camp this year?

The Cubs are wearing similar style helmets as well this spring.

These helmets aren't bad, and I'm old-fashioned about this stuff.
I can even live with those blue-and-black uniform tops -- they're certainly an improvement over the all-orange horrors I remember from spring trainings past.
Now if there was only a way to get rid of the all-black tops in the regular season...

They look good.
Batting helmets haven't changed for 30 years, maybe more. So maybe it is time for a change. The whole design of the helmet is different.
In Europe, amateur teams play with helmets like these for a couple of years now. So actually the design is not completely new.
But again, they look good.

Its not the vents on the side that bother me. They were used in the all-star game last season.
It is the two-toned mesh of black and blue that they are using. On the new vented helmet and the old helmet.

What's the rave about these things, do they provide a cool air flow to the head? What's wrong with the traditional ones?
