As usual, thanks for doing this, Annie. I get so busy sometimes...it's tough to keep track of things. Your efforts are very much appreciated! :)

I've updated the schedule with the radio broadcast schedule, and will include the scores as links to the game wrapups from redsox.com.

Nice debut for Coco -- 3 for 3, single, double, triple, RBI... Papelbon dinged by a comebacker (ankle)... check the link for more. :)

Did anyone hear the game? I couldn't get it to come in up here in Radio Free Vermont.

It didn't even occur to me that the games would be broadcast on WEEI. :radio Probably a good thing; I think I would have felt sick hearing that Papelbon was nailed by a come-backer. I'm glad Coco had a very nice start. I think I speak for everyone when I say I hope it's a sign of good things to come.

I can't believe I completely missed the game on NESN yesterday. Ugh.I know. It was the top of the 8th before I realized it was on and I only caught until the top of the 9th. I might just catch the radio broadcast today.

Sunny, warm enough to open windows; Red Sox on WEEI, crowd noises, crack of the bat. Giant Glass commercials. Dunkin commercials.

Dark chocolate at hand. Nice navel oranges to snack on. Needlepoint Christmas decorations that need a simple continental stitch for background, to help keep my nervous hands busy.

Split pea soup with nice meaty pork neck bones plopping away, cooking itself.

Cat napping on the window sill.

This years schedule at hand to review the home/away stands. Items gathering to arrange for this years "shrine". New: a Red Sox heavy board license plate, my letter from DZ, in green ink, that he used to fill out an ACLS scorecard, he wrote me when he sent me a 2004 Tshirt. (Whee!)

My Remy signed, very stained mojo baseball hat. Mojo Wally, sitting in the hat. Various pictures from the Sunday Globe.

I was looking over the box score from today's game against the D-Rays (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/boxscore?gid=260306130) and I realized that the out of the 16 players in the lineup, I only know Youkilis and Graffanino. The pitchers making appearances today don't really fare much better, either. I can tell it's going to take a while for me to develop a feel for this team. If they struggle at all, it could take me all season.

I know what you mean, Flash. It's tough to keep interested in spring training games, but things'll settle down by Opening Day. (I hope!)

If anyone else wants to help keep the scores updated, that'd be cool with me. The scores as I've posted them are links to the game stories on redsox.com -- red for a win, blue for a loss.... I get busy and fall behind. :hp

Did anyone read the ESPN insider article that the Sox were already looking to trade Graffanino? Sheesh. This is going to be a tough season for all fans.

Yeah, they were talking about that during the game on NESN yesterday. Graff loves Boston and would love to stay, but was kind of rendered superfluous when Loretta was acquired. It's a bummer for him, to be sure, and for those of us who like to see him play.

I was wondering why the Sox went out and got Loretta when they had Graff - -but during the winter they intended to release him, but then offered him arbitration as a formality, causing interested teams to back off, as signing him would have meant losing a draft pick or something. With nowhere else to turn, Graff accepted arbitration and re-signed with the Sox...and is now in limbo. :ughh

Here's four reasons-
Loretta: .301 batting, .368 OBP, .408 SLG. and a .986 fielding%
Graffanino: .268 batting, .336 OBP, .394 SLG. and a .974 fielding%

Im glad we got loretta. I like graffinino but id rather have loretta. Hopefully he plays like he did in 2004. He will be much better than bellhorn (who got on my nerves for striking out all the dang time) And graffinino will be a good utility man on the bench. Graffinino was fun to watch last year though and seems to be a bit underrated.

Graffanino: .268 batting, .336 OBP, .394 SLG. and a .974 fielding%I can't argue with those reasons from a practicality perspective, but this kind of shuffling and dealing is still going to make it very difficult for fans to develop a feel for this team. If this goes on season after season, this could mean good things for the sabermetric fantasy leaguers, but terrible things for the family that just wants a good time at the park. Say what you want about producing a yearly contender, but the fans who set attendence records year in and year out are not the die-hard number crunchers. They're the ones willing to shell out an ungodly price at the gate for the chance to see someone like Pedro pitch or Manny Ramirez chase the career GS record. What's more, if the Sox develop the reputation as a team that chews through talent faster than the Yankees, we'll see a lot more Renterias than we will Pedros.

Numbers are useful, but there's a reason why I qualify my stat-based postings with the tag line "More useless statistics." Those statistics told us that Renteria would be a solid replacement for Cabrera or that Clement would be a #1 starter--both wrong. Let's see what those numbers reflect when Josh Beckett takes the mound in late September.

I can't argue with those reasons from a practicality perspective, but this kind of shuffling and dealing is still going to make it very difficult for fans to develop a feel for this team.

Double edged sword- they want the team to win but they also want the to know the guys who are playing. They can't win by home grown talent alone so they have to trade and sign new guys to replace those who are a year or more away from being starters or who have grown too expensive to keep around. The team isn't without guys who have been around for a while. Nixon, Varitek, Ramirez, Wakefield, Timlin, Arroyo, Ortiz and even Youklis are there.

If this goes on season after season, this could mean good things for the sabermetric fantasy leaguers, but terrible things for the family that just wants a good time at the park.

Winning games and a heavy hitting offense is terrible things for the family? That's news to me!

Say what you want about producing a yearly contender, but the fans who set attendence records year in and year out are not the die-hard number crunchers. They're the ones willing to shell out an ungodly price at the gate for the chance to see someone like Pedro pitch or Manny Ramirez chase the career GS record.

They are also the fans who come to see new additions like Curt Schilling and David Ortiz dominate. They are the fans who come out to see local guys like Manny Delcarman show what hard work can get you.

What's more, if the Sox develop the reputation as a team that chews through talent faster than the Yankees, we'll see a lot more Renterias than we will Pedros.

Or they will be like the A's and Braves by making moves that bring in guys who are "unknown" and turning them into superstars like Tim Wakefield, Bronson Arroyo, David Ortiz to name a few.

Every signing and trade has the potential to become a dud, the team can't let the potential costs of not making the move don't outweigh the potential benefits of making a move.

Numbers are useful, but there's a reason why I qualify my stat-based postings with the tag line "More useless statistics." Those statistics told us that Renteria would be a solid replacement for Cabrera or that Clement would be a #1 starter--both wrong.

Numbers don't tell you that Clement was thrown into the #1 starter spot by default because of an injury or that Renteria would have a guys at second and first who had trouble fielding even basic grounders at times. There are exceptions to stats, but based on their past performances they deserve the benefit of the doubt.

Let's see what those numbers reflect when Josh Beckett takes the mound in late September.

If he's anything like he was a year ago when he was 3-0 with a 2.25 ERA and 33 Ks in five starts then I'd say the team is in good hands.

Well, the spring campaign isn't exactly one to write home about so far, with a record of 4-10. I know, it's all exhibition, and it doesn't mean anything... but has anyone seen things especially encouraging, or especially discouraging?

So the Sox finish their spring exhibition season with a record of 9-20-1. Not exactly inspiring, but since it was only spring training, probably nothing to fret about either.
