Hello all,

I have a question that I hope someone here can help me answer:

Who actually is in possession of the Ebbets Field blueprints? I know they were found in 1992, and that they're in the hands of a private collector, but who might those hands attach to? The blueprint scans on ebbets-field.com are nice, but not too terribly useful for the idea I have rolling around in my head.

This thread has made me 'cry like a baby'.

Before they tore-down Sick's Stadium in Seattle, I wrote a letter to the Seattle Times (which they actually published), complaining that calling it a 'bandbox' was just stupid.

The ballpark was one of the finest in the minor leagues...and the Seattle air made for FEW home runs.

I went to the ballpark on its final day, and took a seat, and some backstop netting home.

Appropriately (and thunderstorms are rare here), there was a thunderstorm.

They are not called "Green Cathedrals" for nothing.

I visited New York at the end of August to go see a game at Yankee Stadium.

I'm a Dodgers fan and I was staying with some friends in Brooklyn. I couldn't believe that people are still bitter about the whole thing.

Needless to say, I didn't go around yelling that I was from Los Angeles. :hp

Today marks the 49th anniversary of the demolition of Ebbets Field. A very sad occasion indeed. Have a cold Schaefer today (or maybe six), and perhaps listen to an old tape of a Brooklyn ballgame. Peace.

On a different note, Red Sox catcher Josh Bard notes today in the Boston Herald "that his father, who grew up in Norwalk, Conn., once played in a high school all-star game at Ebbets Field, home of the Brooklyn Dodgers."

I tried to confirm the date on this, but the best I could do so far was a 1999 article in the Detroit News quoting a man named Norman Brill from Oceanside, NY, who said he hit a homer in such an event more than 40 years before." This puts it some time in the 1950s, which would tally with Mr. Bard's age.

I didn't see any reference in Bob McGee's book. I'll take a look at Joe McCauley's (maybe he can chime in).

Another little fact I hadn't known, courtesy of the book "Brooklyn!" by Ellen Marie Snyder-Grenier (published by the Brooklyn Historical Society).

Page 253 states:

"Some of the large blocks, stone, and other debris from Ebbets Field became filler for land in Mill Basin when new homes, especially those along the waterway, were built in the early 1960s."

Here's an article in today's New York Post about a Little League game that apparently took place in September 1959:

This could well be the last baseball game at any level in Ebbets. However, I'll drop a line to the author, who is not aware of the Negro American League action with Satchel Paige that happened in August.

I have researched the vast majority of published ballpark books, all the websites I could find (including this one of course), and the Hall of Fame looking for outfield shots of Ebbets field from the late 1920s and early 1930s right before the outfield grandstand was constructed. The best I could find were from 1920. Anybody got any later preOF grandstand shots?

There are a couple of recent stories about how the L.A. Dodgers have honored several members of the 1957 Little League World Series champions from Monterrey, Mexico. Apparently this team got to visit Ebbets Field on August 25, 1957. The lads became Dodger fans thanks to rebroadcasts in Spanish of their games.
