View Full Version : Brooklyn Dodgers by the numbers

When you hear a uniform number pertaining to the Brooklyn Dodgers you probably think of a certain player, I know I do, but sometimes that player didn't always wear that number. I'll use Gil Hodges when he came up in 1943 he didn't wear number 14, what number did he wear. He isn't the only famous Dodger to wear a number different then his regular number. I thought we could have some fun with this and bring back some memories

He wore number 4 in 1943. A number made famous by none other than The Duke, but worn before him by another Brooklyn great Dolph Camilli.

Right! Many people don't even know he played for the Dodgers. While much is made of today's players not playing their entire career in one city, this was just as prevelant in the early part of the century. Wilson being one example. Your turn.

We all know Gilliam wore number 19 for the Dodgers, what pretty good left handed pitcher who batted righthanded wore it in the late 40's early 50's.

You and Flatbush Flock are good, Joe Medwick came over in the middle of 1940 and stayed till the middle of 1943, Medwick must have paid Dressen for the number in 1940 then he switch to 77 in 1940-41 then Medwick switch to 6 in !941-42 then back to 7 in 1943. I also see that Dressen wore 7 in 1943, I wish my aunt was alive she was good friends with Charlie's wife she would know, we'll have to look into who wore 7 in 1943.

Very close answer! He wore 15 which is not thought of as a traditional pitchers number. I love those old uni's before numbers were worn. You really don't need numbers in baseball anyway. I almost bought a 1917? Dodgers jersey, the old Uncle Robbie type with the criss-cross pinstripes, and Brooklyn "B" on the left breast, with 3/4 length sleeves, but it was like $300. Oh well I am content with my Camilli repro, and Jackie repro, both of which I got great deals on. I am like a crack head with these throwbacks, you can spend a small fortune on em! Your turn.

It was Dick Whitman an outfielder, who must have got sent to minors or got hurt, he only had 10 at bats in 1947. I guess they called Gil up then because Gil only wore 14 in 1947 and thereafter.

However, Sandlock is an interesting answer to the question of who wore #1 before Pewee and #4 before Duke?

There was a player who was traded to the Dodgers in the middle of the year he had wore the same number for the same team for every year except his rookie year, he wore a different number with the Dodgers his first year then went back to his usual number his second and final year with the Dodgers. The answer is Andy Pafko, he wore Gene Hermanski's #22 for the rest of 1951 then went back to #48 in 1952 the number he wore throughout his Career with Cubs except his rookie year when he wore #33.

If memory serves me right it was #11.

How about listing the names and numbers of all the Coaches WE had. In OUR day, WE had a pitching coach, a first base coach, and a third base coach!

Which coach wore #47?

George Pfister wore #47 as a coach. What number did he wear when he played for Brooklyn 11 years earlier?

Bridges wore #9 and played his 1rst 2 seasons for the Dodgers in 1951 and 1952. He was traded along with minor leaguer Jim Pendleton to the Braves for pitcher Russ Meyer in 1953. The same day as that trade was made, the Braves sent Bridges to Cincinnati for Joe Adcock.

The more I played with them, the more I found that no one could take a joke - my batting average.

It's a good thing I stayed in Cincinnati for four years -- It took me that long to learn how to spell it.

Here is the trade where Rocky wound up with Cincinnati, they don't get more complicated then this.
February 16, 1953: Traded as part of a 4-team trade by the Brooklyn Dodgers to the Cincinnati Reds. The Milwaukee Braves sent cash to the Cincinnati Reds. The Milwaukee Braves sent Earl Torgeson to the Philadelphia Phillies. The Cincinnati Reds sent Joe Adcock to the Milwaukee Braves. The Brooklyn Dodgers sent Jim Pendleton to the Milwaukee Braves. The Philadelphia Phillies sent cash to the Milwaukee Braves. The Philadelphia Phillies sent Russ Meyer to the Brooklyn Dodgers.

After all that movement, I'm surprised they didn't wind up back where they started. Here's another Bridges quote...

You mix two jiggers of scotch to one jigger of Metrecal. So far I've lost five pounds and my driver's license.
