Shane Spencer in '98

I was just wondering if people remember how amazing Spencer was in September of '98? The team was miles ahead and in cruise control, then up comes Spencer with the September callups and in just 67 ABs, he hit .373, 10 HR, 27 RBI, and slugged an astronomical .910. I think he also had a couple of Grand Slams in there. I can't remember ever seeing anything like it. He then continued it into the ALDS vs. Texas where he added another 2 HR and 4 RBI, and slugged 1.500, before cooling off for the rest of the postseason. It was incredible.

I think he'd had about 4 slams that month alone. I've never heard of anything, and it only added to the greatness that the entire 1998 season was, including for the Yanks.

Along with Big Mac and Slammy Sammy, Boomer's Perfecto, Shane's big month, the Yanks sweeping the WS, it was truly an incredible year.

His stock truly was very high at that time. I just wish he hadn't gotten hurt so often, since he ended up with an inability to hit RHPs, so he'd lost the starting RF job when John Vander Wal had to be called over to platoon with him.

He was greatly for that brief period of time, and Sheffield especially in 2004 seemed to do what Shane did then: kept hitting big boppers just when we needed to tie or win a very close game. Always such timely hits also.

I loved Shane from that September on. Too bad he hasnt gotten another real shot, he re-signed with the Hanshin Tigers in Japan for 2006

Spencer hit 3 slams that month...he tied the major leauge record for grand slams in a month

I remember him. When I was 9, I went to my first ball game and saw him hit a home run on the final game of the season.

As far as his career goes, I think Andy Worhol said that everybody has their 15 minutes of fame.

Ahh... '98 was a good year for MLB!
